Cuba’s power grid failed and the entire nation plunged into darkness Friday, less than a day after the government stressed the need to paralyze the economy to save electricity in the face of major gasoline shortages and large-scale, regular outages. The electricity went out nationwide Friday morning after a failure at a thermoelectric power plant in Matanzas, east of Havana, Cuba’s Energy Ministry said on X. The blackout came less than a day after the prime minister, Manuel Marrero Cruz, held a late-night television address with state officials to discuss the ongoing electricity crisis, which experts said was the worst the nation — long accustomed to food and electricity shortages — had ever experienced. For weeks, the country has lacked the fuel to run the power grid, which has left large parts of the nation without electricity for 15 to 20 hour stretches.`` Via Vince Cavaseno, Mashpee MA, IRCA: https://www.nytimes.com/2024/10/18/world/americas/cuba-power-plant-blackout.html?unlocked_article_code=1.TE4.RWck.J1POdodh4z49&smid=url-share And from RHC itself via Mike Cooper: https://www.radiohc.cu/en/noticias/nacionales/367734-cuba-combatting-the-electro-energy-challenge (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** CUBA. 6000, Oct 20 at 0109 still no signal from RHC which might be on if power be restored. Weakest of the four. I had last heard it on August 23; by next token English broadcast Aug 26, it was missing, and ever since. As usual it`s the weakest at unfavorable angle for us, less than 15520 < 17715 < 17855, the last being S9+30/40 direct. BUT now there is another problem: it`s Wednesday and there is NO ENGLISH!! 2200 keeps right on in Spanish about flora or fauna in Africa and Canarias. Could not catch program title but said something like ``doble-L tres punto cero``. Looked up later on websked, indeed ``today`` jueves 24 at 00:00 local, it`s ``Doble Hélice``, a sci/tech show; followed by usual French as also heard. Looking ahead a few days, English is still shown for Sat 26 & Tue 29 at 00:00, i.e. Fri 22 UT and Mon 23 UT! So was this a one-off pre-emption, or what? Something`s messed up in Madrid. And isn`t it incredible that supposed ``international`` broadcasters make listeners abroad adjust to their own local clock changes, which should be irrelevant. REE`s confusing B24 sked at HFCC: http://www.hfcc.org/data/schedbybrc.php?seas=B24&broadc=REE pretends everything is in Spanish! PLUS a separate broadcast, the only one at 302 degrees azimuth, further west toward N America than 290 for the rest, this one on 15110 at 2000-2400 daily. Re VOT on 11785.014- at 2233 Oct 16: ``Glenn, the "higher offset than usual" you 'measured' using UTwente yesterday, Oct 16, was caused by a malfunction for their AMSync-Function. They were 4 Hz +. This function is derived at UTwente by using the German Mainflingen timesignal DCF77 on 77.5 kHz. However this was off for one hour during late European afternoon from 1315 to 1415 UT, when they returned, they had some further two breaks in transmission. See attached pic from a snippet out of yesterdays' UTwente fulltime-waterfall-display. I noticed this non function of AMSync mode a couple of time these last years, with AMSync sometimes 100 to 200 Hz away from carrier. It usually takes a couple of hours for AMSync to be syncronized with DCF77 again. BTW, Kiwi's use GPS data for AMSync - it is called SAM on the Kiwis. See, you logged SW Gold Radio on the 16th as well, with 4 Hz above frequency {6160.004+ at 1813). Listened yesterday to WOF on 6145.004 at around 1915 UT and thought what`s wrong there. WOF is always "on spot". As I said in a post before - UTwente is not the 'Gold Standard' - antenna wise, high noise floor levels and often heavy interference on certain parts of the band. George McClintock tells me it`s currently only at 0000-0100 as there are still transmitter problems. Off at 0059* after announcing change to 5085. I guess that rules out WOR on 9475 which had been sked at 2300 Saturdays. 5085 does not come up immediately, but finally JIP a few sex before *0104. Its sked is 0100-0300 except UT Saturdays till 0330 with WOR. At 2036, still nosig on 17790 into Pardinho. For B24, WRMI has registered a new one, 17775, 24h at 160 degrees: was old KVOH channel; wonder if RMI be ``holding`` it for them? Considerable storm noise and I can`t copy all his interjexions. A&A are at home = Studio 9 in Deland of Floriduh, right into discussion of Hurricane Milton which hit them last week, so this one is live, and the Oct 12 one a rerun. Storm damage there but they hunkered down and were OK with power out for only 3 days. They were ready with Coleman stove for some hot meals. Also advises running lamps with charcoal starter fluid. Lots of big oak trees were blown down, not much damage to own property. HM spawned 137 tornados, one of which went nearby. Angela ``dresses up`` for the radio - I guess not seminude this time? Thanks God for Gov. Desantis in a ``MAGA state``. I suspend at 0015. Runs a minute overtime, 0101 JIP Hal Turner. Also checked 3265 and 5130 finding no signals, and 6160- was JBA direct (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** U S A. 4840, WWCR: one biweek ago I happened across this frequency after 0315 UT Sunday Oct 6, and was astounded to hear an `Australian DX Report` by Bob Padula that was soon very obviously more than FOUR YEARS OUT OF DATE! See my log about that. I planned to check the following week to hear what they would do then, but missed it. So this week I make a point of monitoring it from the start. He never explicitly gives a date it was recorded or to be originally broadcast. This contains some of the *same* totally outdated DX loggings, but it`s not identical. He starts by saying it`s almost summer time, so would that be November? Certainly not June as previously. The dead giveaway part about ``upcoming`` HFCC in Bulgaria canceled - which would have been August *2020*, is never mentioned. Also dead giveaways are the prop figures he cites initially: 10.7 cm flux at 70, SSN of only 5, IPS says NO sunspots, so the new cycle has not yet started (Now, of course, we are at solar max! someone could research exact date for those). All his logs were between 1800-1830 UTC on some unknown date, as if those would be of any particular use elsewhere even when they were fresh. For amusement, I copy down all his tips.
