In fairness, flawed websites appear to be an almost endemic problem in the shortwave world (even VOA's has wormholes where actual radio is concerned), almost as if there is a fear that having one that is usable for program/frequency guides might be a slippery slope to people wanting to listen on line instead. As to what Glenn calls A*ATT, if it received the same level of correspondence as the previous, more cosmopolitan incarnation of Radio Angela, death by asphyxiation would have been just a matter of time. But we'll see if it comes up for air again before November. There too, it needs to be mentioned in fairness that WBCQ also airs John P. The driver inductor jumped track and caused a small breaker to trip. Most of the resistors, screws were not making contact due to rust and corrosion. The items were disconnected and cleaned. The final inductors are messed up and are not turning and will be taken out and cleaned shortly. There was one IC shorted in the controller and was replaced. One door interlock was damaged and had to be adjusted with a new part. The previous engineer had a bad final tuning motor go out and replaced it with a stick to turn it. My son and I took a motor from a Harris transmitter (in storage) and got rid of the tuning stick. The Harris schematic diagram showed a switch for tuning and operation. There was a pot there and was replaced with a switch to match the diagram. The contact shoes for frequency change were in bad shape and were cleaned with sandpaper. The pump in the water tank was not working and had to be replaced with a spare pump. This is only a sampling of the problems encountered. [moved here to join later comments:] UNIDENTIFIED. 1160 kHz, May 27 at 0710 UT, dominant signal is Spanish, mentions ``misericordia`` every few seconds -- that`s an RCC = ICR buzzword like you would hear on R. Católica Mundial 12050. Misericordia translates as mercy, compassion, or clemency. There is only one Mex, XEQIN, way off in BCN, no such format and allegedly silent anyway. Altho two ``community`` outlets have CPs. Likely a US station. Only one NRC AM Log possibility as SS/REL: Radio Luz WRLZ Saint Cloud FL U4 2500/500. Yet mwlist calls WRLZ ``Nossa Rádio``, i.e. Portuguese! Link to net website calls 1160 WBIX Orlando; and three others, in Ft Lauderdale, Boston and Connecticut, all ``WBIX``! - which is the real call only for 1260 Boston - where this group for brasileiros originates? Anyhow, that`s not this. In NRC Log, there are several REL but not SS on 1160, including EWTN; could one of those in EE include some SS? KRDY San Antonio TX U4 10000/1000 would be likely by proximity and propagation, but it`s Relevant Radio. That net`s sked unshows Spanish now or anywhen. WMET Gaithersburg MD U4 50000/1500 is with Guadalupe Radio Network/EWTN lacking SS in NRC Log, but net website is in Spanish! Could broadcasts be bilingual? Nothing really fits. Beyond Mexico? Here`s surely an RCC in WRTH and mwlist: HRVZ R. Juan Pablo II, 1 kW in Siguatepeque, Honduras. KSL 1160 SLC is hardly a factor even without auroral condx - hard to believe it`s 50/50 kW ND U1 at only 800 miles. Re: 1160 kHz... ``Glenn, would this not be KCTO in Cleveland, MO, ("Hosanna Radio Network")??`` - Greg Hardison, CA Greg, Tnx for the idea. I disregarded KCTO because NRC AM Log calls it ``La Mega`` = not religious. No hits on Hosanna Radio Network - where did you get that? There is a Hosanna Broadcasting Network which seems to be all about TV in English. However, Radio-locator.com says KCTO is Radio Maria - link to that website has a map of affiliates all over world, but not in the KCTO area. Have not found a program sked. Glenn ``A medium-mistranslation on my part. MW-List has it as "Hosanna Christian Network" (organized religion tends to muddle my brain, hi!). Somehow I have always perceived KCTO as a Spanish/Religious outlet; perhaps from an earlier SDReception from K.C., or a DX report from someone, sometime. Still, as with the possibilities you listed, I can't really see it being anyone else. Hmmmmm.... The other GH`` (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** U S A. Re the 1160 unID Spanish RCC station, KCTO: Where is Cleveland, Missouri, anyway? Not even in my Rand McNally Atlas index, but shows in the Large Scale version as due south of Kansas City, just barely east of the KS/MO border. If the longitude there be exactly the same as on State Line Road in the city of KC, 94°36′26.7″W, the long. of the site as in radio-locator.com, 94 36 28.8 W, puts it slightly on the KANSAS side. However, pin on the Google map link puts it about 562.5 feet EAST of the border in MISSOURI! Coverage map cross for site is right on the state line, but zooming in on one of them looks like barely in MO. Why couldn`t MO & KS fix their border at some ``even`` longitude? Why couldn`t KCTO put its towers exactly on the state line to further flummox us? Well, it`s a `road` even that far out of the City, crossing circa 250th Street. Another tiny town achieves world fame by hosting a minor radio station as its ``City of License``. Meanwhile, more from Greg Hardison: ``Glenn: – Re UNID on 1160 kHz, this might be the best we'll do: http://hosannachristiannetwork.com/ Hosanna Christian Network - Linked to, from MW-List under KCTO/1160 entry. Just listened to it via Kansas City KiwiSDR and heard the attached ID. An update has been sent to mwlist.org and it should be up soon with the correct links and the ID. 73, Mauno`` His clip has ID in English for KCTO plus two FMs - translators no doubt, in Kansas City proper; net timecheck for Eastern & Central zones only, list of stations in several states, NOT including this one, but including on a subcarrier of 99.5 WBAI New York, which is Pacifica! I listened for it again May 28 circa 0645 UT: nothing but a weak KSL? Rather than propagation, if KCTO, I think it must have been on 5 kW day power when it was dominating. DXMAP shows Es FM DX between OK and California, May 25 at 1520 UT, so out to the car to check. I never hear any such, but rather tropo enhanced as far as Kansas City, almost 300 miles, despite APRS map showing no connexion into Kansas, just some intra-OK blobs not quite reaching Enid. These tropos may well be obscuring some E-skippers. Anyway bandscanning I also note some OKies. Approx. city-to-city distances, not site-to-site, on distancefromto.net 92.1, at 1522, strong signal turns out to be only KFXI with singing ID, and it`s in MONO even during C&W music at 1547. 100/100 kW from Marlow OK, usually fringely audible. WTFDA does not mark it MONO! 194 km/121 stmi 94.9, at 1524 $tereo rock, VG signal. This is one of my best ``open for DX`` frequencies. Soon ID as ``94-9 KCMO``, ``another 50-minute music marathon``. That`s 100/100 kW CoL Shawnee KS, a KC suburb. And no -FM suffix despite the AM 710 station plus 103.7 translator. Could be confusing. So strong it ought to show RDS icon at least, but nonesuch at 1553 on DX-398 check, holding it out the window. 404/251 99.5, at 1529, $tereo, ``Big Country 99.5``, i.e. KXBL, 100/100 kW, Henryetta OK, rimshotting Tulsa market, our normal fringer. However searching the FMDB on that slogan, we see it also applies to K258GZ, 250-watt translator of KALV 1430 Alva OK - no doubt separately programmed from KXBL. And there is a third one in WV, WBYG. 201/125 92.9, at 1532, ``The River``, i.e. KRQV, 100/100 kW Tulsa; formerly KBEZ FM The Drive. Hmm, there is a river drive along the Arkansas. 171/106 97.5, at 1537, several Manhattan KS ads, weather, Eagle Radio. Trouble is, among the 13 stations licensed there, none on 97.5! BTW, there are zero licensed to Manhattan NY, but two in MT. Eagle in slogan only hits a Vermont 97.5! This must really be KJCK, 100/100 kW in Junxion City KS, no Eagle in DB, rather ``Power Hits 97.5``. 307/191 97.3, at 1539, gospel rock; 1557 ``K-Love``. There are very low power ones in CO, IN, TX and WI, but this must be the full-power 55/55 kW, and closest, KLRX, Lee`s Summit MO, near Kansas City. 429/266 100.3, at 1542, Kansas Lottery ad, fadeout. Considering PTA above, 100/100 kW, KDVV Topeka; however there is a much closer one, KNZS 14.5/14.5 kW, Arlington, a tiny town not even in my regular Rand McNally, but in the Large Scale one just WNW of Wichita. 354/220 or 169/105 104.9, at 1543, South Asian language, laughter, f/out. Suspect tropo extends as far as the TX Metroplex. None such in the DB`s Language field, in MO, KS, OK, or TX, but for: ``Ethnic`` FUNASIA, KZMP-FM,, 35/35 kW, Pilot Point TX, as heard before. Overcoming OKC station. 344/214 93.7, at 1549, ``Hot 93.7``, rock. Merely KSPI-FM Stillwater OK, 16/16 kW semilocal. Two others are in CT and FL. 80/50 94.1, at 1556, Kansas City-area ads for Memorial Day. Therefore, KFKF, 100/100 kW, Kansas City KS. But which state is it from, really? Longitude of site is 94-30-24. But searching finds the long. of Stateline Road is 94°36′26.7″W. Therefore, it is in MISSOURI! 418/260 94.5, at 1552, ad for 573 area code; MA Bank in Macon. 573 is roughly the eastern third of Missouri, almost border to border IA-AR, except for greater St Louis. Not Georgia. Macon is in NE MO, midway between Chillicothe and Hannibal; and midway between Kirksville and Moberly. Guess what: NO station licensed to Macon; must be KRXL 90/90 kW Kirxvil. 626/389 96.7, at 1559, ``96-7 & 1310 Sports Radio, The Ticket``, obviously another Metroplexan heard before, KTCK-FM, 90/90 kW, Flower Mound TX; on 1310 successor to onetime great classical WRR owned by City of Dallas. 381/236 (Glenn Hauser, Enid OK, WOR) ** U S A. RF 15, May 23 circa 1700 & 1800 UT, KTBO ``14`` OKC is breaking up as if DX QRMed, very unusual. APRS map shows large tropo blob between Enid and Pampa TX, so suspect it`s Fox Amarillo, KCIT with 925 kW ERP ND. AMA is about 90 degrees off the side from my rooftop UHF antenna permaimed toward OKC, and rehooked the one loose guywire yesterday. No sign of any DX on `open` channels; only other anomaly is RF 29 KTUZ ``Shawnee`` = OKC market, a bit weaker than usual on the meter but not breaking up. No full-powers on 29 in Amarillo area but lots of others across TX. Second possibility on RF 15 is KJTL, Fox Wichita Falls, 1000 kW direxional NNE toward here (Glenn Hauser, Enid OK, WOR) ** VANUATU. 7260, May 27 at 0653, NO signal from R. Vanuatu; had been very reliable, at least JBA, checked every night for weeks, but not logged. Ron Howard agrees: ``VANUATU [non-log]. R. Vanuatu, random checking from 0755 to 0940 UT, on May 27. Not heard on 2485, 3945, 5040, 7260 nor 9960. Ron, Asilomar State Beach, Calif. (near Monterey), CommRadio CR-1, external antenna: 100 ft. long wire`` - don`t forget 7890 & 11835, onetime great harmonix (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** VENEZUELA. 4940, May 25 at 0647, no signal from Estación 4940, nor for a few weeks at random late-night chex. It used to be on late but not always, but I would seldom bother to log it. Need to check if still there earlier evenings. I don`t see any reports of it in May, since April 24. Or COLOMBIA (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** VENEZUELA.``Hi Glenn - Here on the California coast, I also noted the absence of 4940 kHz, but did not record exactly from when it went silent. Ron Howard`` No signal at 0223 UT May 26 into Bonaire SDR -- but from UK: ``Glenn - I noted 4940 kHz with a strong clear signal at 0328 UTC 25 May using the Kiwi SDR receiver on Bonaire. Long religious monologue by a lady in Spanish. Assumed this was Estación 4940, though no ID copied. 73, Alan Pennington`` (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** VENEZUELA. 4940, May 28 at 0336, JBA carrier about same as HSNL of S9+10. Presumed Estación 4940, which has become more irregular and underpowered? (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) UNIDENTIFIED [and non]. Local line noise level worst on LW & MW, has abated slightly, so I can at least detect some NDB carriers, but not enough to copy IDs. Tentatively based on previous experience: 365 kHz, May 29 at 0653: most likely AA, 100 watts of Fargo ND really in MN 346 kHz, May 29 at 0654: surely YXL, 1000 watts at Sioux Lookout, Ontario 344 kHz, May 29 at 0655: previously, JA, 400 watts at Jaxonvil FL 332 kHz, May 29 at 0656: barely copiable, dash and QT, 1000 watts at Thunder Bay, Ontario - if any Canadian can make it, this is it. Cannot hear IC Wichita KS mixing on 332 (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) UNIDENTIFIED. 1230 kHz, May 29 at 0647 UT, approx. 1 kHz tones lasting 7 seconds between pauses lasting 3 seconds, in graveyard pileup mix. Suspect it`s a failed satellite feed instead of programming or deliberate testing somewhere. Does anyone recognize this pattern? My closest, WBBZ Ponca City OK, cannot dominate at night (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) UNIDENTIFIED. 1566 kHz, May 29 at 0330, JBA carrier into R75, on both antennas but slightly stronger on the E/W Wellbrook loop. Toward the end of a perfunctory JBA MW carrier search in USB upward at 9 kHz intervals, 1 kHz below each E Hemisphere channel. Nothing at all heard lower vs very noisy summer conditions plus my local line noise. This has got to be TWR BENIN, which I`ve heard before much more easily in winter. Now in summer it has an advantage to North America, lower latitude path far from the Midnight Sun: maxes out less than 40-north in the Atlantic just outside Washington DC where the G.C. path from Parakou to Enid enters North America; also, 100 kW, far more power than anything in Europe, max 1 kW! Only more than that is 10 kW from Iran. Nothing else of any power in Africa, all per mwlist; but shows *0345; maybe they run open carrier before sign-on. I am reminded to check for it by this on the IRCA iogroup May 27 but lacking a time!: ``Benin 1566 in S. Alberta --- Weak, but clear and distinct sign-on bells/chimes from TWR Benin on 1566 last night. I am away in Spain right now so logging into my remote via my iPhone so file reviews not very complete. 73, Steve Ve6wz Sundre AB`` Of course, there are several more 1566s in east Asia & Pacific, but now all in the Dayside, 25 kW or less, except 250 kW FEBC Korea South. The only other extremely remote possibilities than Benin would be an American accidentally 4 kHz off-frequency, or pirate deliberately as a DX spoiler. Another time, lacking any audio, should try to DF it and/or check remotes such as Canary Islands as early as 0330 (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) UNIDENTIFIED. 17855, May 27 at 0454, S7/S9 of open carrier/dead air, into UTwente; after this tip: ``[WOR] Open carrier on 17855 kHz, 0415 UTC May 27 --- I'm going to guess someone at REE forgot to hit the off switch a few hours ago? 73, Ricky Leong, Calgary, Alberta, Canada`` Maybe; Still at 0454-0500+, 17855.002, S7/S9 OC into UTwente; nothing on other three REEs: 17715, 15520, 15390, none ever sked at this hour. EiBi shows CRI English Beijing 572 on 17855 at 04-06. But this just went off at 0504 - maybe one or the other saw our discussion, ha (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) TIPS FOR RATIONAL LIVING ``FREETHOUGHT MATTERS`` -- spring finale: Dan goes to Oxford Union to debate god delusion, 28+ minute audiovideo: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t4WgxxbwxNo Afterward linx to full presentations of three negatives, which were much edited down into the program https://ffrf.org/
