At 2146 the signal drops off, or rather down below noise level but Synch stays locked to remaining signal as above; 2147 back up and more brief drops to S6 vs S9+40 (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** EGYPT [and non]. 9899.60, Feb 14 at 2218 direct, R. Cairo is 100% improved: NO signal into UTwente! However, at 2204 UT, Andy Reid, Ontario tells the WOR iog: ``With varying degrees of audio quality, I don’t believe it is the transmitters. They are on now in English 9900 with some audio squeaking though. I did hear the word “president“!`` (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** GUAM. 15215, Feb 14 at 2226, vocal SE Asian music, S5/S2, best if not only signal from west on mostly vacant band; it`s KSDA amid Vietnamese hour, beamed even further west from Agat. How did they get this info since there was NO modulation this week? The website is well-developed, and remains mostly in Farsi even if you click on ENGLISH; searching on 5910 goes nowhere, and can`t find anything about radio broadcasts but plenty about satellite TV. But at Maryland SDR, much further beyond W European target, RRI is loud and clear with none of that QRM. Or could be local problem at UTwente? (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) see also TURKEY [and non] ** SAIPAN. 9720, Radio Free Asia: see USA [and non]. WRMI ** SPAIN. 9690, Friday Feb 11 at 2259, NO signal from REE! N American frequency is off. Something`s always nonsensical at Noblejas. I`ve cleared a semihour to listen to Spain and/or Turkey English at 2300; running two remotes at the computer. Maryland for Spain, which soon finds the other three frequencies active: 11685 weakish with usual RTTY QRM, but 11940 for S America VG S9+10/20 and 12030 Mideast, VG S9+10/15 like a local, so I keep on it! Almost as if knowing that the NAm transmitter is down, REE redirected the 12030 toward us, or at least bidirexional. But even under normal circumstances it`s good for us off the back, often better than 9690 depending on OWF and time of day. So I`m mostly listening to VOTurkey at same time, q.v., via UTwente. On headphones, one of them panned for some separation. Both start with news of course and you can guess the prime topix now. At 2311, REE into an Amy Egan feature about the Eurovision Song Contest this year, May in Torino, but Spain already picked its entry; and about previous years. Sounds like they are all hard-rock, yuk. 2324 it`s over and Justin Coe read my mind, after all that pop-rock, time for a respite of some 200-year-old-music, a Lied from Schubert`s Winterreise about Frühling, danke! (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** SPAIN. 9690 reactivated after AWOL Friday, Monday Feb 14 at 2300, token REE English, VG via Maryland SDR; after news mainly interview about a Greek film; but at 2325 acknowledging World Radio Day yesterday with UNESCO statement about it, and last minute at 2329 a bit of a Spanish version of Elvis Costello`s ``Radio, Radio`` (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** SPAIN. 9690, Wed Feb 16 at 2307, token REE English is not off the air but VG S9+15/27 into Maryland SDR. After news, feature about a ``ghost village`` uncovered in a draining reservoir; 2310 about Gala cinema awards in Valencia, not in Castilian. Shortly retune to TURKEY, q.v. (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** SUDAN SOUTH [non]. 11650, Feb 14 at 0334, S7-S9 of Hornish-of-Africish music, 0335 announcement, more music, mostly talk past 0348. Outstanding signal at first seems the OSOB = only signal on band, until I find also a JBA carrier on 11875, so instead it`s the SSOB = strongest signal on band. At 0352 I switch to Knoxville SDR which is getting 11650 better, S7-S9 reading also, during dialog talk and carrier offset displayed as +53.6 Hz, varying to +52.3 Hz. It`s Radio Tamazuj, via MADAGASCAR, which also accounts for offfrequenciness. MUF barely to 12 MHz is funxional for this trans-equatorial signal; but the 11875 must be VOA Somali via UAE, close to trans-polar (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** TURKEY. 6125, Feb 11 at 0430, VOT English is on, S9/+10 into Maryland, modulation OK, no squeal; 0433 a talk about augmented reality. At 0358 direct I feared it would be late or missing, no interval signal yet (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** TURKEY [and non]. 5960, Feb 11 at 2300, VOT English is on today with VG signal into UTwente and modulation, only a hint of squeal. I`ve cleared a semihour to listen to Spain and/or Turkey, almost the only Europeanish SW services in English to N America at this hour. (There is Romania also but officially not for us beyond W Europe, yet putting a VG signal into Maryland on 7220, unlike the other 3 either off or aimed away.) So I`m mostly listening to Spain at same time, q.v. On headphones, one of them panned for some separation. Both start with news of course and you can guess the prime topix now. At 2315, `Weekly Analysis`, by some professor, Turkey`s policy on the Ukraine crisis; Tatars, the related Turkic people in Crimea, are a significant factor. 2329, `Feeling Supreme`, on ``natural cures for cracking hands due to cold; eczema``. Now especially during pauses the CCCCCCI is obvious underneath from East Turkistan, standard denunciation (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** TURKEY. 5960, Feb 12 at 2308, VOT at S9+15/25 into UTwente, but with that pervasive squeal. Narrowing filter from default 9.0 kHz, down from 2.61 to 2.37 kHz gets rid of it, so squeal is approx. 2.5v kHz. But that leaves the remaining program audio rather lo-fi, especially music. Checking the Autonotch box does nothing about this. After news, 2309 sounds like ``The Firsts of Anatolia``; later at 2325 repeating already yesterday`s `Feeling Supreme` about cracking hands. By now the CCCCCCI underneath is quite audible from East Turkistan, land of imperialist ChiCom genocide against Uighurs and other Moslems. Off at 2350* uncovering ET. Something`s always erroneous at Emirler. For many years I was on the P-mailing list once or twice a year for VOT program schedules. Is there any such thing on the TV-dominated website now? (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** TURKEY [non]. 5960, Feb 14 at 2259, BBC closes but nothing from VOT English to us during the entire hour as monitored via UTwente. Instead a weak carrier which bumps up to S9 at 2309, JIP PBS Xinjiang, Mandarin in progress from Urumqi, land of imperialist ChiCom genocide against Uighurs and other Moslems. Something`s always erroneous at Emirler; so no contest whether to listen to this or SPAIN, q.v. (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** TURKEY [and non]. 5960+, Feb 15 at 2333, VOT direct S9/S6 but just barely modulated. Checking UTwente at 2348 it`s +016 Hz high, under- modulated but sufficient if you turn up volumes on strong S9+27 signal; compared to e.g. much louder 6015 station, Kazakh from East Turkistan, standard denunciation. Something`s always erroneous at Emirler. 2353 unusual s/off by heavily accented YL as if this were the 1330 broadcast, IS until 2356* uncovering another Urumqi in Chinese, its CCCCCCI having been audible before TRT quit. Now at least until the 0000 timesignal, another carrier is making a rumbling SAH, unaccounted for in listings, so I guess it may be the Emirler exciter before turned off completely (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** TURKEY [and non]. 5960, Feb 16 tune-in from Spain at 2316, closing a `Feeling Supreme` feature about some remedy, +018 Hz offset and S9+35 into UTwente but annoying hum. Otherwise sufficient modulation and no squeal. Something`s always erroneous at Emirler. 2318 `Weekly Commentary` penned by someone in a Washington DC branch, but neither intro nor outro can I understand their name or credentials, as voiced by the YL with heavy accent, but it`s about Qatar as a useful non-NATO ally. 2329, `Turkey`s Cultural Treasures,` something dating back thousands of years; but at 2330 it`s my time for `NBC Nightly [sic] News` already before sunset here. Later always enjoyable Turkish music fill, 2353 the usual OM announcer sign-off of the ``1230-1330 on 15450 to Europe`` broadcast! Which is doubly erroneous, the A-season scheduling only. Something`s always awry at Ankara. The CCCCCCI has been growing and uncovered at VOT 2354* after only a fragment of one IS iteration (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** U K. Many of the NDBs used to set up approaches to airports use 5 letter names, i.e., "BILOY" that sets up for Billard Airport in Topeka, Kansas. of course, the beacon call is "TO". This is also true of enroute IFR "intersections", such as the "PAYSO" intersection, NW of Phoenix, but close to Payson, AZ. Another beacon, that sets up an approach for Charles City (IA) airport, is designated "CHUKK" (get it? Charles, Chuck Hi HI). Anyway, I learned over time that some of the airnav sites are named for purely local things like nearby golf courses, businesses, rivers and lakes, or even ghost towns. Someone from South Sioux City, Neb. might have your answer. It may be that the airport where the beacon is located, Martin Field, was named for Tom Martin. Beacons "at the field" are usually named for the airport itself, and may not use the 5 letter rule. But I took a look at the aviation chart and saw right off that the beacon is one of two that set up approaches for Sioux City Gateway Airport's Runway 13/31. (The other beacon is SU-"SALIX"). Also checked at UTwente tuning MW rather than SW: at 2120, 1323 kHz is good and clear into other side of Europe, S6-S7 over slight CCI. Against ``the cult of the mask``. 0121, trimulcasting on 7490, 6160, 4790. New 4790 service starting March 1 will be called ``Radio Angela`` following Uncle Bill`s tests in February. Will be a ``premier`` service with new music, great alternative programming, 4h per night starting at 7 or 8 pm Eastern. Mostly music, some radio theater. Example week 3 of the tests, detailed night by night, but UB has not sent those to us. Will include some from WHVW and WXNZ. This will NOT BE STREAMED. You will have to listen on a SW radio or OK via a remote SDR. 4790 has excellent TimTron audio and is being improved even more. Only religious content allowed on it will be music. ``Gotta get Glenn Hauser`s WORLD OF RADIO on the lineup, the only real DX show left``, says Allan. 0137 call from Cracker, trucker protests spreading, anti-vax, Allan agrees. 0146, a 5-minute podcast lexure by someone, ``A brief history of slavery`` --- it`s existed thru human history, was not started by whites, but ended by whites, so don`t blame them. 0154 finally datestamp as 11 of Feb, YOOLF 2022. Announced as on 4790 only. 0130 goes over programs planned from March 1 launch, but not publicizing details in print, including a 2-hour classical music/opera block on Sunday nights, which U. Bill did tell me about: ``about 4790, in addition to all the new talent with new music coming on board, on Sunday nights I'm going to present (hopefully with guest hosts down the road) a weekly 2-hour WBCQ Concert Hall starting local March 6 (World March 7). It will be long form opera and symphonic works that you can't do in a one-hour program (actually, you can`t do the operas within the confines of two either, but acts will be separated using shorter classical works as needed to fill. Over the course of a couple of episodes, the works will be presented in their entirety.) Starting with Rossini's The Barber of Seville episodes 1-2 followed by Bizet's Carmen episodes 2-3. There will be some PDQ Bach for filler. There is another very good classical show out there, Encore, but this one will go long so not really competing with each other. Encore isn't part of our grid, but I do enjoy that program. 73, Bill`` One song is ``You`re Ugly``. 0200 more UBMP and soon recognized as repeat of first hour.
