No, songs resume; 1545 fades down; 1553 Antártida song and announcements; 1556 Antda. song again, 1600 announcement, 1605 song. Difficult copy, noise level about equal. Pardinho SDR drops out at 1613 so I switch to Campo which is getting it at same level; 1626 is it off? No, JBA talk, but 1634 seems gone, cannot even detect a reduced carrier. The fourth one on 4980 continues blocked by WRMI. As always this combo clinches it for PBS Xinjiang`s four language services from the land of imperialist ChiCom persecution and genocide of Uyghurs and other Moslems. Don`t buy anything made by their slave labor! It`s still pre-sunrise there not until 0140 UT, and post-sunset here, graylinish. BTW the Han masters impose Beijing time even upon the westernmost part of an empire which ought to have five timezones, so that by the Commie clock, Urumqi sunrise is not until ``9:40`` (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** EGYPT. 9899.6, Jan 16 at 2115, again no signal from R. Cairo is on again and failing miserably, extremely distorted music via UTwente at S9/+20. 4+1 mis-timesignal for 2115:00 which I time ending at 2115:50, only a fraxion of which could be due to internet delay; programming continues unreadable past 2145. Something`s always egregious at Egypt (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** ITALY [and non]. Re: World of Radio anomalies --- I had asked Alfredo Cotroneo of IRRS/NEXUS/IBA about these and he replied Jan 14: Hi Glenn, Happy new year, and sorry for this late reply. Thanks again for reporting on our frequencies. We are aware of some of these issues, please read my replies inline below: Glenn Hauser wrote on 07/01/2022 23:14: > WOR seems to be airing OK on 7290, Fridays at 20:15 CET. I assume the one skipped will be in two weeks, the third Friday, Jan 21. Altho they don`t turn on the modulation until almost 20:01 missing Aida and sign-on, joining FSN in progress. This happens consistently every week. The carrier is on by 19:59, so why don`t you have them add the program feed? ``Currently on 7290 kHz from 20-21 CET there is a slight conflict in the local modulation line (audio) being used by another program, and we have to accept this compromise for the current season. The sign in and initial program are being slightly delayed to try to minimize this issue. Being the program in parallel on 918 kHz since 19 CET, it's another reason for not using a sign-on that would sound odd in the middle of the broadcast on MW (TX modulation feeds are the same for SW & AM).`` > I also check 918 kHz via a remote receiver. Once 7290 was also on they were almost synch with FSN, ID and UN News, but after that they split with music fill on 918 which ran past 20:15 when WOR started. I was trying to have lunch at the same time so did not monitor them minute by minute, but for some time WOR was not on 918. When I rechecked at 20:34 it was back on both. ``It's an old issue, that the Medium Wave station has occasional issues with picking up our feed. It's something totally random and we tried to fix it several times. It's due to circumstances (hardware, software, telecom (internet lines, weather, power, internet failures, etc. at the MW station) not under our direct control. If we had some €5k to spare, we could fix it, but while we try to survive on a very low budget, we have to live with that - at least for the time being. Sometimes our feed drops to a locally generated backup audio feed, and then it resumes later.`` > Another consistent problem I ask you to fix: 918 chops off the air Fridays at about 22:57, some two minutes before the next WOR playback is over, since it`s 29 minutes long starting at 22:30. Could you have them leave the transmitter on for another 2 or 3 minutes? ``It should be supposed to stop at around 23:05 CET, after the news. I will double check, maybe it's just the TX timer out-of sync.`` > Today before 22:57 I could also barely recognize my voice on 207 kHz, a very weak signal. First time I`ve been on longwave for sure, and hope this will continue. ``There are still works-in-progress at the LW station. A new 200 meter long wire antenna has been built, power is still very low, even if hopes are to increase the power to 10 kW later this year. At this time we are not sure whether we will broadcast regularly in parallel also on this frequency, because the cost will almost double for us, but generated income to pay for the airtime will not likely grow enough to cover our expenses. It all depends on the interest among our broadcasters and listeners' response, of course. It's just an experiment so far, and coverage is still very DX-like, with reception reported even in Lapland but weak, not broadcast quality yet in our main target areas in Central Europe.`` > There were reports last year about plans to change 918 to 1323 kHz. What is the expectation now? ``We are still waiting for final authorization from Rome. It may be coming any time now in Q1/2022. Then we are ready to make the switch.`` > At the nearby remote there is considerable interference from Madrid on 918, but AM Italia is on top ``Sounds good :-) Bests, Alfredo -- Alfredo E. Cotroneo, CEO, NEXUS-Int'l Broadcasting Association email: alfredo@nexus.org http://www.nexus.org ph: +39-02-266 6971; Tollfree: 1-888-612-0039 fax: +39-02-706 38151`` (Glenn Hauser, OK, Jan 15, WOR) ** ITALY. At 1618 UT January 19, Alfredo Cotroneo of NEXUS/IBA/IRRS notified me: ``Hi Glenn, We just received the formal authorization to use 1323 kHz. We'll start testing as of tonight, and will drop 918 kHz. 73s, Alfredo`` Monitoring via nearby Noale SDR from 1655 tune-in, 918 is off. *1656, 1323 comes on at S9+10 over CCI, with English ID as if on 918, ``have a nice listening``! Lots more off & on at lower and higher levels past 1708, testing. Specifically: music until 1658 when level drops to S6 but same music still audible; 1700 jumps to S9+10 again for talk in Italian; 1702 cuts power again after mentioning Boris Johnson. 1704 back to full power, 1707 off, 1708 on; rechecking later with music until 1758* cuts off uncovering two weak signals making SAH of about 6 Hz. 1800 back on in Italian at S9+5, now CCI from two audios. 1803 Feature Story News from IRRS, but CCI from equal level alternately overtaking, in Hungarian! That has to the the minority language service from Romania as listed. At 1806 I recheck 918 kHz and find it is back on now at S9+10, // 1323 with FSN and over CCI presumed Madrid. At 1815, Hungarian dominates 1323 and wonder if Italy be off again. Recheck much later, at 2255, 1323 is S9+10 with little QRM, 2258 Italian ID and timecheck as ``23:57``, a minute slow by CET. 918, nominally closing by 2205* UT, bears nothing but Spain by now. So this confirms AM Italia has two separate MW transmitters; WRTH 2022 shows 5 kW on 918, 1 kW on 1323. 1323 co-channel? listed in WRTH: two UKs of 20 and 500 watts; 50 kW Iran in Azeri at 0030-2030; 15 kW from Romania, see if you can figure out the schedule from page 334; 10 kW from Tanzania, 1500-1800 only with CRI English relay; China with 9 stations totaling 1360 kW! plus more minor stations in Asia and Pacific. Management must have expected a net improvement in coverage by moving from 918 to 1323. For groundwave of course, higher frequency and lower power assure reduced coverage. Quite aside from the CCI and ACI situations. BTW, nothing heard on LW 207. 1323 ex-918 will of course affect WORLD OF RADIO times: Fri 1915 & 2130, Sun 2100 UT (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** JAPAN [non]. 13725, Jan 13 at 1455, pop music, Farsi announcement, S7/S9 on a usually vacant frequency, 1459 ``Inja NHK World``, one pip and off by 1500*. I usually catch previous airing, UT Sunday 0100 on 5850 via a well-positioned remote to the NW of FL, but this week due to perpetual scheduling conflict with `Theatre Organ Under the Arch` on WTWW, I skipped it and resolved to get it now, furthermore listen direct on SW. Starts sufficiently, but fading down by 0310 as some ionospheric disturbance has hit, soon unusable. So I go back to computer, checking remotes in TN, GA, MO which normally get it well, but no good there either! WWV reported the K-index at 03 was 3, down to 1 by 0600, no storms cited. But the 27-day outlook issued an hour earlier called for Jan 17 to be at maximum readings of the entire cycle: 10.7 cm radio flux 115, Planetary A index 18, Largest Kp Index 4 (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** SPAIN. 9690, Mon Jan 17 at 2321, token English from REE with Justin Coe about foreign-language bookshops in Madrid; said he arrived there in 1988. S9+20/30 into Maryland SDR (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** SPAIN. 9690, Wed Jan 19 at 2317, token English from REE finally airs a new irregular mailbag or ``DX program`` in progress, Justin Coe responding to four listeners, all of them well-known to us --- small? world; already in progress, first heard, Alan Roe as of Dec 19 requesting holiday program details to be publicized --- sorry, there weren`t any and on Dec 25 and Jan 1, plugged into domestic RNE anyway. Next from Bruce Li (Lee) in Australia with report requesting QSL -- I`ve also had a report from him. As to REE QSLing, Justin is still looking into this ``pending issue``. Next from Alan Holder, Isle of Wight with program requests/suggestions including about Spain being a main miner of toxic mineral mercury. Then from John [``the VORW``] Jurasek, Orlando FL, who mentions that he has been very sick with COVID. Justin and we all hope he`s much better by now. A sesquiminute of music fill until timesignal. Monitored at S9/+10, VG into Maryland SDR. No telling when the next mbg will show up nor on which DOW. John Figliozzi says it`s now titled `Radio Waves` (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** TURKEY. 5960, Jan 15 at 2349, VOT English VG via UTwente, just in time for sign-off. Instead of claiming it be the 1330 on 12035, recites correct times and frequencies from 1930 to 0400, and PS at 1730. But then says broadcasts at 22-23 and 03-04 are pre-recorded; NO, those would be their summer advanced timings. Announcer, please engage brain rather than just reading obviously wrong info. Cuts off at 2349* with just a few notes of the incomplete IS. But I think it`s forward rather than backward. Something`s always awry at Ankara, erroneous at Emirler (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** TURKEY [and non]. 5960, Jan 17 at 2313, VOT English is very strong but with some hum, via UTwente, registering +18 Hz offset (but not confirmed calibration with a standard frequency), ending `Review of the Turkish Press`, and starting `Feeling Supreme` with remedies for xerophthalmia = ``dry eye``, something you don`t get every day on the radio. One of them: lavénder water. 2319 outro as ``program has been Health Line[?]`` before outro which is identical to the intro with theme, for `Feeling Supreme`. So HL must be a subprogram of FS. Or if HL is the program, FS is the supraprogram. Recheck at 2353.5, sign-off again claims we have been listening to the 1330-1430 on 12035, no others mentioned. Something`s always awry at Ankara. Cut to IS which plays forward briefly, cut off at 2355.5, uncovering Chinese from Xinjiang PBS, Urumqi, EAST TURKISTAN, land of imperialist ChiCom genocide against Uighurs and other Moslems; but also with carrier from a third station causing ripple SAH, and reads +10 Hz offset. Shortly it goes off leaving XJPBS at less than +1 Hz offset. None of the schedules account for any third station at this time (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** TURKEY. 5960, Jan 18 at 2344, VOT English direct is S9/+10 with flutter and somewhat undermodulated, but without the CCCCCCI which infests it in Europe, with `Did You Know That?` feature. Without further listening it`s impossible to know whether any program is starting or ending since the same theme and title is played both for intro and outro. 2354 the IS is playing; halts and restarts at 2356 now with two German IDs before 2357*, depriving masculine and feminine KW-hearers of any more German which continues on the program feed line für Nachteulen. Something`s always erroneous at Emirler and/or awry at Ankara (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** TURKEY. 5960, Jan 19 at 2316, quick check of VOT English into UTwente: S9+25/30 but today`s transmitter is the one with horrible squeal, detracting from the sufficient modulation level: starting ``Health Line``, but topic unclear. Something`s always erroneous at Emirler. I quickly switch to loud & clear SPAIN, q.v. (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** U K [non]. 6195, Jan 18 at *0259.5, BBCWS in English cuts on via Masirah, OMAN, S5-S7, better than a weaker S3-S4 signal which cut off a few seconds earlier: that was the same 250 kW site concluding Dari/Pashto Afghanistan service at 35 degrees. The 03-04 hour is at 320 degrees, altho intended to go no further than Turkey. I`m checking this out since I heard this from Doug Brown, Jan 15: ``It's been a long while since I've been able to enjoy BBC World Service with armchair quality reception and at a convenient hour of the day. But so I have been for the past week. We are now back at our winter home in the Tampa Bay area of Florida, after a two year hiatus, due to covid. WORLD OF RADIO 2121 monitoring: confirmed first broadcasts, UT Friday January 14 at 0130 on WRMIs: 5850, VG direct; 7780, S8/S9+15 into UTwente SDR. OK except cuts off my closing again. Also confirmed UT Fri Jan 14 at 0330 on WRMI 5985, JBA direct, but at 0352 check, S7/S9+10 into Knoxville SDR; some 5980 jamming ACI audible at fades, unless in AM Narrow, or Synch USB mode, which shows +25-28 Hz carrier offset, more than usual for a WRMI. So I compare it to WWV on 5 MHz, which shows +21-22 Hz high! Which WWV certainly is not. Rx calibration is off, so WRMI would really be only +4-6 Hz. Need to do this habitually when possible, citing SDR offsets. Also confirmed UT Fri Jan 14 at 1530 on WRMI 9955, S9+10/20 direct, no jamming audible. Cut off at 1529 was a strange-sounding drama. Also confirmed Friday January 14 from 1916 on IRRS via Bulgaria, 7290, after ~minute of dead air, cut on WOR play at end of opening. As usual, previous IRRS programming also cut on late just before 1901 with Feature Story News already in progress; 1908 song fill and more music; 1915 dump to dead air for a minute. Today it`s S9+30 into UTwente, not so much problem from much weaker ChiCom ACI de 7295. As for 918 kHz, AM Italia via Noale SDR: tuned at 1901 // FSN, and probably was not joined late, S9+10; nothing audible on 207 kHz, and something else on 1323. Also went to music fill at 1908, and dead air at 1915, but unlike 7290, stayed dead with no WOR! Finally 1918, roboYL ID in English as ``AM Italy``, and ``Have a good listening``. And more music past 1926 when I quit monitoring both as I`m due to visit Box 1684. WOR 2121 confirmed Fri Jan 14 at 2140 tune-in to 918 kHz, S9+11 via Noale with only lite CCI; and this time WOR is underway, presumably from 2130 start, and NOT chopped off air at end but complete to 2159, then a bit of ``Honkey Tonk Blues``, IRRS ID over Inter/Madrid timesignal, and 2200 Feature Story News. Alfredo Cotroneo says this has been supposed to stay on until 2205, and now it finally is on longer than WOR. (7490.1), UT Sat Jan 15 at 0100, WBCQ webcast of `AAAWWW`: it`s all A&A conversing, yelling over each other. Laments it`s cold even at Studio in Deland of Fla, 51 F. Laments USA has never gone metric. Standardization is essential. Disses electric cars, bronx cheer. 0120 implies that Biden is cognitively incompetent, and Harris is ``the greatest whore`` (or was that, horror? enunciate!) 0123 musing on whether our reality could be a computer simulation? 0139 about the Webb telescope, and Allan mixing up his underwear; 0149 finally datestamp as 14th of January, YOOL 2022; invites email. 0151 article about AM radio degraded due to high-frequency suppression, 10 kHz max, even worse on SW, 5 kHz limit due to channel spacing. Blame NRSC for not keeping AM higher quality. 0158 two quick emails; never any phone calls. Ignores Free Radio Weekly even tho new issue out promptly by Larry Will. 0200 prayer. 0201 JIP Hal Turner late as he plugs being on KYAH 540 in Utah. (KYAH approached me last April, but with 13 watts at night?) John Carver`s version: ``Tonight's show started on time on 6160 and 7490. Both signals could be copied but 7490 had the best signal so listening to that this evening. Allan and Angela in the studio. Opening banter between Allan and Angela about how she's dressed for radio. Talk of the weather in Maine and in Fla. Then complains about the US never adopting the metric system and then a small mini rant about what a pain in the ass it's created. Then onto electric cars. Allan wants manufacturers to standardize batteries, connectors, measurements, tools etc. Then onto politics talking about the Supreme Court and vaccine mandates. Allan then asks us to prove to him that we're not living in a computer simulation then expands on this for a bit. Signal on 7490 starts to degrade around 0133 so switch to 6160. Then talk of the new space telescope and a report that says it has unfolded completely with no problems. Then Allan relays a strange story about finding his underwear was on backwards after a trip to the bathroom and he swears it was not backwards before that. He calls it a Matrix moment. A glitch in the program. At 0152 he reads an article from Radio World about quality of audio in AM radios. A quick reading of some emails at 0158 and he's cutoff at 0200 just as he announces the closing prayer. Something`s odd at Okeechobee (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** U S A. 4985 & 4975, Jan 17 at 0710, WRMI-4 is back on air after absence 24 hours ago from fundamental 4980 with TOMBS, and parasitic plus/minus 5 kHz spurs. 4975 is always stronger than 4985, the latter not always detectable with ute QRM. Yet NASWA Flashsheet filed my yesterday`s log under 4985 which I did not mention at that time (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** U S A. 9950 & 9960, Jan 18 at 0725, JBA carriers, parasitic spurs out of TOMBS on WRMI 9955, which is S9+20/30. So far this anomaly has been traced to the 9955 and 4980 transmitters only, but be alert for the like flanking other WRMIs (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** U S A. 5830, Jan 14 at 1522, WTWW-1 night frequency active at this unusual hour with SFA, S9+20. So is WTWW-2 on too? Yes, 5085 with rock S9+30 in broad daylight over a megameter path. B-21 FCC shows 5085 available 24 hours beamed due south; but 5830 only 00-14, at 50 degrees. Between 14 and 02, supposed to be on 9475, if at all. Evidently Ted thinx FCC rules are so flexible. It seems that in practice, #2 can be on without #1 too, but not vice versa. Except maybe when #1 be really on 9475 like Sunday mornings. FCC also OKs these but hardly ever used: 9930, 14-24 at 180 degrees 9940, 00-24 at 40 degrees 15810, 00-24 at 40 degrees The top two would be the #3 transmitter (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** U S A. 5097.718 & 5072.282, Jan 16 at 0701, the parasitic spurs from 5085 WTWW-2 are still here, but JBA carriers I really have to dig out. They have been suppressed but not eliminated as first I thought. These match at plus/minus 12.718 kHz above and below 5085 which hits S9+20/40, rock music on so late (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) UNIDENTIFIED. 5040, Jan 17 at 0712, JBA carrier with RHC off this time, so Vanuatu? Or 3 x 1680 algo (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) UNIDENTIFIED. 6920.0 AM, Jan 16 at 0714, S6-S8 rock music with heavy bass. Extremely unusual for a N American pirate to be on so late; and I had not heard any on this band during `prime` Saturday evening time.
