Christian Milling of shortwaveservice, who produced the 6180 special aired via Austria, August 7, replies: ``Well, the show was a program from Summer 1979, one of about 10 still existing complete original recordings on cassette in more or less studio quality from Radio Andorra that survived the severe storage conditions in the more than 30 years abandoned transmitter building in Encamp. The program was composed by the last artistical director of Radio Andorra, Arty Parera together with the chansonnier Sacha Distel, one of the most important artists of France at that time. But for sure this rusty old tape can't beat the excitement of a WOR show. But then I am not a pilot. ``Completion date of the project is planned for May 2024`` (via Glenn Hauser, WOR)``` --- Walt Salnaniw, who commutes between Victoria and Masset BC, replies: ``Glenn, I happen to be a pilot, and here's my take: Most pilots use GPS for navigation with fancy Garmin units in the cockpit. I never really did, preferring a map in my lap and nav aids (VOR and NDBs) to help with navigation. I always enjoyed using NDBs, both the official ones, and the unofficial (read AM stations on 530 to 1700 kHz) ones. They were surprisingly useful and simple to use. The NDB signal when heard would point directly to the station, so it was very easy to turn the aircraft directly to the signal, and if you flew over it, it would immediately swing 180 degrees. One could also triangulate one's position by tuning several stations. VORs more or less worked the same way, but in the VHF range. I always found them a bit more complicated to use. I foresee the day when GPS satellites are disabled for natural or man-made means, and then there'll be a whole lot of pilots who will be utterly incapable of navigating! 73, Walt`` (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** CANADA. Steve McDonald, VE7SL replies: ``Most large commercial jets are equipped with RNAV capability l which can be used in conjunction with ground-based nav facilities (VORs and DMEs) to navigate accurately but that’s not the case for the smaller stuff.`` Martin Potter, Ont., also replies on the ODXA iog: ``Concerning your item about NavCanada decommissioning LW/MW beacons, your correspondent Walt Salmaniw makes a very good point. It seems to me that NavCanada, with their emphasis and reliance on GPS satellites, is creating an "all our eggs are in one basket" kind of situation. There will be no redundancy, other than more satellites. An item just this morning on Slashdot.org https://news.slashdot.org/story/21/08/07/0212200/cnn-explores-how-space-force-is-defending-america makes the point that a military war in space, while not likely for the foreseeable future, is not exactly *unlikely* either. All an aggressor has to do it detonate a few nuclear devices *above* the ionosphere and the global positioning satellite system would be toast instantly. Will NavCanada immediately turn on the beacons again to save all the aircraft in the air at that time? Then there are natural events. A very unusually strong solar flare might adversely affect many of the GPS satellites on the sunlit side of the earth at the time of the flare. I know the satellites are hardened against expected solar events of that nature, but hardening has its limits and I am sure the GPS designers had a practical upper limit on what they could do and did do. Unfortunately, Nature has a way of surprising us in unexpected ways and at unexpected times. Maybe NavCanada is a bit short-sighted and perhaps too trusting of both technology and the present "peaceful world". 73, ... This should be a better time slot for these programs. This change is effective this weekend. Regards, Lw`` 4790 is also being evaluated as a replacement for all Area 51 programming instead of 6160. WORLD OF RADIO monitoring: last week, UT Sunday August 1, Hansjoerg Biener in Germany was hearing WOR on WRMI 5950 before 0100. It`s not on the skedgrid, as that half hour is not accounted for on System L. Other days of week there may be 1-hour programs from 0000, but on Sundays at 0000 it`s Wavescan which is only one semihour. So we are sure to check for WOR 168 hours later, UT Sunday August 8 at 0030 on 5950: YES, it`s on, but from 3+ years ago! #1935 recorded June 19 [2018!]. S9+10/20 via Knoxville SDR. Unlike a lot of time-sensitive weekly shows, we always give the produxion date right at the beginning, saving listeners from trying to figure it out or wasting their time on a rerun. The # if not the date is also always given at the mid-break and the very end. Apparently this was an orphan file in System L --- no telling how long it`s been showing up at odd times with long-out-of-date info. I`ve asked Jeff if he could arrange it so the latest WOR appear in this slot. Current WOR 2098 confirmed UT Sunday August 8 from 0330 on WA0RCR, 1860-AM, Wentzville MO, good via nearby Warrenton SDR but with heavy storm noise no closer than WI/NE/KS, none in MO/IL. (7489.9v), UT Sat Aug 7 at 0000, WBCQ webcast of `AAAWWW` sounds familiar, going to do a ``tutorial on freedom`` as if we need that from him; usual opening fiddling with mikes, praising Angela`s appearance, for his eyes only. And then about the 175th anniversary of Monticello ``tomorrow``, so this indeed is a repeat of last week`s show, and John Carver agrees; no further monitoring needed (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** U S A. (7489.9v), Aug 9 at 2329, after listening to the secret repeat of the first half of `UBMP` on WBCQ webcast, Monday at 2300, a spot commercial for Progressive Insurance, immediately followed by the regular 2330 show `Camp Constitution Radio`. It`s hard to believe that a major advertiser such as P.I. would intentionally be sponsoring such an obscure political SW show. What is going on? Have they bought some spots on WBCQ and one happens to be inserted here [as I noticed once before: maybe every week]? Spot advertising on US SW stations is exceeding rare, not to be confused with commercials within a totally-sponsored syndicated show; tho some appear amid otherwise unrelated musical filler on WRMI (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** U S A. 4790, Aug 11 at 0615, TOMBS via WBCQ, allegedly 50 KW, is VP, with some CODAR QRM both plus and minus. AGAIN. Keeps happening around this time of night, but not on other WWCR or WRMI frequencies. How nice that they are wasting their watts but the programming is thus upgraded (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** U S A. 5980, Aug 7 at 0626, JBA talk vs remnant pulse jamming. No doubt it`s the WWCR leapfrog mixing product of 5890 TOMBS over 5935 DGS/PMS, another 45 kHz beyond, both of which are VG tonight (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** U S A. 4840, Aug 11 at 0616, WWCR with S9+30 of DEAD AIR AGAIN, rather than TOMBS. Altice/Suddenlink cable TV interrupts whatever channel we are watching and presumably all of them for a nationwide emergency alert test, Aug 11 at 1822 UT -- as we dodge for the mute button, and also quickly turn on the R75 for a MW bandscan, but by then, no sign of the test, all ops normal. Vanuatu harmonic from 5040 nor has anyone ever? reported it here. 5040 however has been reported on air well past 0600, instead of 3945 which does harmonicize on 7890 and 11835. It`s still too early to hear RV on 5040 even if on and Cuba be off, which it is this date (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** VENEZUELA. 6205-AM, Aug 10 at 0015, nondescript music here with ROCV reactivated. I`m camping on the Bonaire SDR which is all busy but someone in Caracas already on this frequency, until they start tuning around the 49mb at 0017. But quits by 0020 when I take over and back to 6205, showing carrier offset plus 8 to 11 Hz at S5-S7, some strange off-mike singing and clapping? or chugging? keeping rhythm past 0040+. Manuel Méndez had reported on the WOR iog yesterday morning: ``ROCV, El Tigre, Venezuela, 6205 on the air again testing --- Radio Onda Corta Venezuela ROCV, El Tigre, 6205, is on air again as reported by its engineer Gregorio Kina in the ROCV whatsapp group. KRLD remains dominant on DX-398, can`t get a DF on this nor enough null of KRLD (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) UNIDENTIFIED. 1130, Aug 9 at 0618 UT, Spanish QRM to KWKH, with super-hype voice actor, SHVA, could be USA or EUM. Last year`s NRC AM Log shows only non-daytimer SS is KSDO 10/10 kW San Diego but religious; supposed daytimers in GA, TN, TX. IRCA Mexican Log had 4 or 5 there. Getting more of it on E/W longwire than DX-398 so could not DF it (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) UNIDENTIFIED. 7506-7508, Aug 10 at 2230, multiple random tones, or rather carriers on slightly different frequencies, at UTwente audible in SSB or SynchAM modes, but not plain AM. Will not lock on to one specific carrier frequency. Not CW, i.e. Morse with a message. Seems unrelated to weak signal on 7505, which is RFA Tibetan via Tajikistan this hour only; and/or ChiCom jamming. The tones could be a different kind of jamming, but they continue past 2300 when 7505 has gone off. In fact, beepery still at 2345. Not a UTwente artifact, as same thing heard on nearby Nordhorn, Germany SDR at 2349. Normally I employ remote SDRs just to check something out on a specific frequency, rather than full bandscanning which I do myself to discover new things: but the noise level here is so bad and the propagation currently so poor that I was bandscanning 7300+ up at UTwente, with probably more to come (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)
