** BRAZIL. 11905-11910-11915, Feb 24 at 0338 and earlier chex this hour, RNA DRM noise JBA via Bonaire SDR, but waterfall shows it`s there as the SSOB and virtually the OSOB on 25m. Only S5 and will not even start to decode partially. Is it propagation, or a reduxion in parameters? Was not getting it last night either (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** BRAZIL. Immediately after posting last log, Chris Mackerell, NZ explains why RNA DRM is no longer making it to Bonaire: ``Change of antenna beam. Good decoding here in New Zealand from 0400 UTC onwards. Not 100% but some nice audio at times, and the Journaline news service decodes. 73 Chris, Marahau, New Zealand`` --- Viz.: ``22 Feb --- In Brazil DRM on SW Being Redirected to the Populous South-Central Part --- The Brazilian DRM shortwave transmission at 11910 kHz is now using an antenna that provides coverage for the south-central part of the country.`` Plus the usual DRM hype: https://www.drm.org/in-brazil-drm-on-sw-being-redirected-to-the-populous-south-central-part/ So now maybe some of the Brazilian SDRs are getting it sufficiently. But, but, what about the dear Amazon, where DRM is so very much needed? O wait, where were the receivers among the tribes? Is it still carrying the Brasília 96.1 music FM channel? Ivo Ivanov replies: ``Very good signal with decoding February 24 at 0550 UT on 11910 kHz via SDR São Bernardo do Campo, Brasil``. So Feb 24 at 2356 I also check the SBC SDR and find an S8 signal but solid decode of MPB and ID, 18+ dB SNR and 12.52 kbps, also headlines. I used to get occasionally high-power Edmonton CFRN-TV, NTSC analog channel 3, always a treat so close to the sporadic-E single-hop max. Sesquidecades ago I could not have imagined that years later, CFRN would abandon analog and channel 3 for DTV on unskippable ch 12. However, per http://www.w9wi.com/web/tv-states/AB.html it does now have 12 relays/translators around the province from very low to medium power, including one each on ch 2, 3, 4. 335-MCW kHz, Feb 19 at 0730 UT, dash and YLD, 1000-watt NDB at Chapleau, Ontario. Fell asleep before reaching top of band. Lotsa sigs but lightning crashes from storm front across central Gulf of Mexico difficultized copy. DXinfocentre.com shows the broadcast as this hour would have started at 0140 from VAR-9 Yarmouth NS with 1200 watts but apparently originating in (Halifax). 2598-USB at 0215 is even weaker JBA. That would be from 0207 UT, VOJ-6, 400 watts from Port-aux-Basques, Newfoundland, SW corner of the Rock, where I once entered NL off the ferry from Sydney (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** CANADA. 6660-RCUSB, Feb 20 at 0255, CHU second harmonic presumed. Harold Frodge in MARE has reported this a number of times and I`ve been intending to dig deeper for it. At first only voice/SSB QRM and strong uteblaaps, and no reduced carrier even detected, but briefly hear some CHUish chirpips; still uncopied at top of minute beep nor preceding voice announcement (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** CANADA. 18134-USB, Feb 21 at 1842, VA7VOC ID as ``Voice of Canada``, i.e. not RCI. Never caught an ID but may have been one a few minutes later when switched to hand-keyed? EiBi has the answer: Russian navy, RCV, 24 hours from se site for SE Europe, i.e. ``Sevastopol 44N56-34E28``, which is really in Crimea, its major port, not Russia; and in both Ukrainian and Russian the name ends with a soft-sign, so append that apostrophe! Sevastopol`. It`s the largest city in Krim, and not to be confused with the second-largest but capital, Simferopol`, which used to host (disinformation?) a R. Moscow transmitter site. And what does the -opol` suffix mean? BTW, I can`t help but notice that this Bonaire KiwiSDR altho above average in most respects, suffers from some local noise blobs especially on this band, which I find peaking roughly 15 kHz wide, like 5812-5827, 5876-5885, 5942-5958, 6010-6025, 6076-6091, 6140-6155, i.e.. about 65 kHz intervals (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** CUBA. Correxion: first frequency in this report 13464 was typo; should have read 13564, fixed: 13564, 13632, 13768, 13836 approx., Feb 12 at 1509, extremely distorted spurblobs out of 13700-AM at ~68 kHz intervals, as always at this time, destroying `Sonido Cubano` music show. 15140 fundamental is much less distorted. Something`s always wrong at RHC (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** CUBA. 6100, Feb 18 at 0642, RHC English is OFF this frequency but remains on 6060, 6000, 5040 VG and maybe JBA 9700. Not in the order tuned and peaks may have shifted slightly over the few minutes. They are very amorphous, the extreme ones only traceable by their F# tones; even the strongest, closest ones cannot be pinned down to the kHz, but intervals for starters are roughly 71 kHz. The two outer fringers do work out nicely to about 6 x 70.66 to 70.83 kHz. Something`s always wrong at RHC (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** CUBA. 6180, Feb 19 at 0241, S9/+10 open carrier/dead air on CRI relay and no ZY audible under, nor any mod at all from relay unlike last time. 5910, Feb 19 at 0303, exactly same S9+10 dead air from successor CRI relay frequency. No sig detectable on x2 = 11820, but not surprising considering RHC fundamentals 11670 & 11850 achieve no more than JBA carriers. However at 0433, 5910 now good but somewhat undermodulated during Yue song. Something`s always wrong at RadioCuba (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** CUBA. 4747.5 & 4782.5 kHz approx., Feb 19 at 0248, matching JBA extremely distorted music spurblobs, minus/plus ~17.5 kHz out of // 4765 Radio Progreso. Both QRMing CODAR, more of that on the lower side. Something`s always wrong at RadioCuba (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** CUBA. 13630 & 13769, Feb 19 at 1457, today`s spurblobs from 13700-AM are quite weak but marked by their F# tones, appox. 69-70 kHz above and below. Something`s always wrong at RHC (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** CUBA. 5910, Feb 20 at 0315, CRI relay is S9+55! of dead air --- almost, a bit of mod peak trying to break thru. Wiggle that patchcord! Despite the silence, stepping across the bandwidth with BFO encounters lots of ``sub-carriers`` especially in the 5900-5905 and 5915-5920 ranges. Something`s always wrong at RadioCuba (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** CUBA. 9700, Feb 20 at 0651, S9/+10 of deadair instead of RHC English; meanwhile 6000 is VG S9+30, 6060 is off, 6100 is S9+20/30 but somewhat noisy modulation; 5040 also dead air of S9+10/20. Earlier at 0612, Ivo Ivanov reported: ``Cuban Spy Numbers HM01 over RHC's 9700 kHz at 0600UT, February 20: 0600-0700 9700 BAU 100 kW / 340 deg to WNAm instead of RHC English // frequency 14375 BEJ 050 kW / unknown to Eu/Am Spanish Tue/Thu/Sat HM01. Something`s always wrong at RHC (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** CUBA. 6180, Feb 21 at 0156, S9+10 of dead air except for occasional modulation peaks trying to break thru, during CRI relay. Wiggle that patchcord! Cannot hear any RNA Brasil if it be underneath. 6180 recheck at 0244 via Bonaire SDR, now there is soft undermodulated Chinese at S9/+10, still no RNA. Something`s always wrong at RadioCuba. After 0300, MWV Madagascar takes over 6180 and CRI/Cuba moves to 5910 where the same defect usually continue, but not checked tonight (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** CUBA. 5040, UT Mon Feb 22 at 0240, RHC tropical, not in dead air, managing to modulate for a change! So I can listen to `En Contacto` which has just started, via Bonaire SDR. Main topic is generic info about amateur satellites starting with OSCAR; a few QSLs on the air and mention that ``Arnaldo Coro está nuevamente colaborando en el programa``. I was listening to hear exactly what they said since Claudio Galaz, Chile reported Coro was greeted on the previous airing at 2344-2359 on 13740. So apparently Arnie is better; however he was still missing from the closing credits. At 0252 onward to the medical show (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** CUBA. 13568-trace, 13633, 13766 S7-S9, 13833, Feb 22 at 1524. Something`s always wrong at RHC (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** CUBA. 5040, Feb 23 at 0309, is S7-S9 of dead air in Spanish; something`s always wrong at RHC. But 6060 is Spanishing with rather poor signal, while 9535 & 9650 are inaudible with K-index of 4 (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** CUBA. 5910, Feb 23 at 0316, CRI Plus in suptorted English relay at S9/+30, but almost sufficient with volume up and close attention. Something`s always wrong at RadioCuba (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** CUBA. 15140, Feb 23 at 1539, RHC is S9 fading to S1 but just barely modulated. Something`s always wrong at RHC (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** CUBA. 13680, Feb 24 at 0006 and still 0020, Spanish is still on despite European service supposed to run 2100-2400* only per EiBi, and so it`s // 13740, nominally 2200-0500 for S America; but both VG signals here. Something`s always wrong at RHC. I was checking 13750 for R. Something`s always wrong at RHC. I continue to be amazed that everyone else seems to ignore these. RHC does not deserve a pass for constantly messing up our spectrum (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** CUBA. 15140, Feb 24 at 1852, RHC mentioning that today is 60th anniversary of first ``Onda Corta Experimental Cubana``, leading up to RHC inauguration officially on Mayday. I`ve read some dispute that it axually started a few weeks earlier. Something`s always wrong at RHC. Must be the most self-congratulatory of SW stations. It`s always something (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** ECUADOR. 6050, UT Sun Feb 21 at 0247, surprisingly strong S9+10 from HCJB`s residual 1 kW into Bonaire SDR, as here is normally JBA. Also surprising is a praise song in English; but 0255 Spanish announcement and praise song in Spanish, no break at ToH nor timesignal. 0313 M&H chatting in Spanish. 0403 YL lexuring on the Quichua saying their culture is machista - to mix genders - i.e. hombres dominating mujeres. This is the extended weekend broadcast past weekday close circa 0230*v (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** GERMANY [non]. 15215, Feb 21 from *1600:05, Issoudun site, FRANCE, cuts on slightly late, JIP the much-anticipated annual broadcast of Radio Amrum/Öömrang from the Frisian Islands along the NW German coast. 1601 switches to English sign-on, saying it`s the tenth such broadcast, announcer named Gerhardt. 1603 back to German mixed with shorebird sounds. WRTH 2021 page 476 says this all began in 2006y, so this must be another old playback? NO, soon proceeds to review of 2020, or rather last 5 years beginning in 2016, alternating languages, so maybe mixing old with new stuff. I am listening first via a Rochester NY remote, where there`s a VG signal as this is 500 kW aimed at NYC. At 1614 I check my own rx where it`s S9+10/20. Unfortunately I cannot give this my undivided attention since only bits are in English mixed with Frisian and High German; and the same hour is occupied by my usual monitoring of `Reliable Sources` on CNN and the `Santa Fe Chamber Music Festival` on KUCO-FM, notably with Brahms` Clarinet Quintet in d, Op. 115. At 1623 they are conversing about Radio Caroline; 1635 contact info in German, interview mixing Englisch; 1655 plug a continuous webstream available, I guess from Frisia, and sign-off already in English with credits, then German, to dead air at 1658.4, finished before ISS can chop them off incomplete. A semihour before, I reminded the WOR iogroup that this were nigh, and many others noted their observations. (6159.9v), UT Sat Feb 20 at 0100, webcast of WBCQ with `AAAWWW` --- as expected starts right off lamenting demise of beloved Rush --- I can`t continue listening but make spotchex every 10 or 15 minutes, noting some of what John Carver mentions more completely: ``Tonight's AAWWW --- Program started on time on 7490 and 6160. Allan and Angela drinking in a chilly Fla. Opening talk about the death of Roach Limbaugh and how he saved talk radio. Then he gave Angela a rundown on the history of talk radio. Allan champions free speech radio and was opposed to the fairness doctrine and credits Limbaugh with the demise of the fairness doctrine and responsible for free speech radio. He also stated that at some point WBCQ would air the interview that Limbaugh conducted with Donald Trump. Angela states that she wishes WBCQ could have broadcasted the Limbaugh program. She also manages a few jabs at Biden and champions Trump. Allan announces that they are adding a new segment to the show every week called Angela's Angle. Her first talk is about free speech and the lack of it in this country. She also states that this country was born on the bible and the gun. Then she moves to the sense of entitlement that the youth of this country seem to be infected with. She also touches on racism and implies that it is the battle cry of the left. Her segment was announced as a five or ten minute commentary but it takes up a good portion of the program. Reading of emails at 0153 which turns out to mostly be a Roach fest. Program ended at 0200 without a closing prayer. John, Mid-North Indiana`` (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** U S A. Fulcher rather than station but which does not filter it out (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** U S A. 1509.835V, Feb 22 at 2335 UT, following these reports in this week`s mv-eko of the Arctic Radio Club: ``1510 16.2 2300 KCTE Independence MO. Seriously offset this evening at 1509.8395. OJS/L = Odd-Jørgen Sagdahl, Trondheim, remote Loran C (close to Berlevåg [NE tip of Norway] – 1000 meter 305 grader) Oid/Tent Nordamerika --- 1510 17.2 0415 Tent KCTE Independence MO stark med diverse ESPN-promos. 0346 några Missouri-reklamer så tämligen IDad. Speciellt som den ligger väldigt snett precis som tidigare gånger jag hört dem. Drygt 160 Hz lågt! Brummar fint mot jämnstarka CO-stationen som ligger rätt. BOS`` Despite being much closer to KCTE, I check for such a far-off-frequency; on the DX-398 in offset SSB compared to 1500 & 1520, there is a 1510-minus looping about NNE/SSW. On the R75 I refine it to 1509.835 and slightly wavering het against the 1510.00 stations. Rather than measuring it directly which is difficult with all the QRM, I match the het pitch I am hearing in AM mode, with same pitch on 1-Hz-step tuning in LSB mode. Also rocking back and forth, 1509.835 is very close to the center of the signal, give or take a few Hz. Altho OJS heard it at 23 UT, I`m expecting to get it only until 2400* which is the official FCC sunset time in February (March: 0030*), for this 10 kW direxional *daytimer* with major lobes to NNE & SSW. Signal gradually improves and by 2355 I make out an OSHA PSA and ESPN mention, and if tuned up to 1510.000-LSB, the audio sounds skewed in pitch as it should from a lower frequency centre. No ID at top of hour, however, nor does it go off! Soon obvious it`s amid play-by-play of silly basketball game. Still there obvious with its het at 0005, 0021. At 0032 I switch to the Kansas City SDR of KD4HSO and hear exactly the same het on a stronger semi-local signal. SAM mode readouts a carrier offset of minus 162v Hz, plus or minus 1 Hz, which is another very neat fit equivalent to 1509.838v. More BKB, still past 0100 with no ID, starting coverage of ``second half``. Of course, KCTE has FM translators, so why don`t they turn off the AM as legally required to do? Obviously local sunset is no barrier, as the other log above was at 0415 UT. Axually, such extrahourity and offfrequenciness are nothing new for KCTE; I probably had it Dec 8, 2018. This was also reported in *2014y* along with corroboration from others: ``1509.8 approx., Feb 26 at 0649 UT, KCTE Independence MO for at least the fourth night is on the air illegally after daytime with sportstalk, and far out of frequency tolerance, big het upon poor WLAC.`` The first report in my archive was on the +plus side from *2011y*, ten years ago: ``1510+, KCTE Independence MO is still off-frequency producing audible het against weaker stations, Feb 9 at 1416; ID at 1417. Taped the day before and then checked against a keyboard, close to F# below middle C, i.e. circa 185 Hz above 1510 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)`` Now I wonder if I put it on the wrong side? Strangely enough, current mwoffsets misses KCTE now and ago with only an interim entry when it must have managed some accuracy as possible: ``1510,0002 KCTE (Independence MO)[-1510.0008] 1400-0200 2018-01-22`` (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** U S A. 1509.837 approx., Feb 24 at 0159 UT, big het tuned to 1510-AM, no doubt caused by KCTE Independence MO, as discussed at length last time, which thinx it`s OK to be a daytimer at night and off-frequency to boot? Well, yes, if it weren`t OK, the FCC would have caught and fined them multiple times in the past decade, right? This time I get the frequency by zero-beating (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** U S A. 1539.96 approx., Feb 24 at 0250 UT, usual low audible het to 1540.0 stations such as KXEL. Not as bad/off as KCTE three channels lower, but just as obvious and persistent, altho not always, KGBC Galveston TX per numerous previous logs; no idea about current format as this be its DX claim to fame (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** U S A. The #1 TV program I must never miss is `Sunday Morning`, on CBS. When I first moved back to OK in the `90s, I discovered that the CBS affiliate in OKC was not even airing it! Instead, gospel huxters: after all, it`s --- Sunday morning. So I prevailed on a friend of mine in Albuquerque to record and mail the tapes to me. Fortunately, KWTV eventually started carrying it. Trouble is, the live airtime of 8-9:30 CT is unfortunately early for a night owl who would like to doze at least until 9:00. Timer record? Yes, if you want to leave the cable box and its spurs on all night; and KWTV cannot be depended on not to shunt it to its substation KSBI if there be BREAKING NEWS or WEATHER. Which meant I had to wake up by 8:00 to be sure to start the recording on correct channel. One week recently I did run the timer and got burned, so I had to go after CBS SM on the website. As I reported at the time, it was off-putting with rough interruptions for the same group of commercials at every break. Even when started on time last week, my tape ran out early so I had to get the last third from the website. Then I was pleasantly surprised to find an adless stream which lasted only 62 minutes for the whole show and I could skip ahead to the last part I had missed. So assuming that setup continue, I decide now to rely on watching full episodes ASAP during following week at https://www.cbsnews.com/sunday-morning/ OR NOT: now I find that altho there are clearly labeled linx to ``Full Episode Feb 21``, you only get the first segment before it defaults to ``live`` CBSN. You have to keep going back to the SM page and clicking anew on each segment, hoping not to miss anything altho they add up to less than 62. OTOH one can easily skip occasional items about stupid ballgames, which infested Superbowl Sunday. BTW, altho Suddenlink cable provides many shows on demand from CBS and other networks, SM has never been included (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) UNIDENTIFIED.
