** ANTARCTICA. 15475.98-RCUSB: Once again LRA36 operations bear little resemblance to their own advance publicity. So we are not expecting them this Saturday, but checked anyway at 1733 October 17, there they are in Spanish conversation, via a remote in Brasil, VP S2-S3. 1739 into a brief song, back to more chat. 1755 another song. Manuel Méndez, Lugo, Spain, had informed us Oct 16: ``ANTARCTICA, 15476 USB, LRA 36, Radio Nacional Arcángel San Gabriel, Base Esperanza. According with a whatsapp received from the station operator, the next LRA 36 transmission will be the Tuesday 20th of October, day of the 41th anniversary of the station. The program will start at 1300 UTC, one hour earlier than usual. I suppose there will be a special eQSL commemorating this anniversary transmission. tranalra36@radionacional.gov.ar Address for reception reports`` (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** ANTARCTICA. 15475.98-RCUSB, continuing LRA36 log from last report, Sat Oct 17 via Brasil SDR: signal improving, mostly music past 1843, but off by 1915 recheck. Remember, next broadcast is supposed to be Tuesday for anniversary, not Wednesday (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** ANTARCTICA. 15475.98-RCUSB, Tuesday Oct 20 at 1417, LRA36 ID with 96.7 FM in passing amid history of station, starting on 6030, 41 years ago, remember? S5-S8 into Brazil SDR. 1418 a guitar song. I can`t keep listening now, so at 1426 I hit Record on a Kiwi for the first time, but checked later it had timed out after 30 minutes, and where did the recording go? How do you find it once initiated, to play back? Manuel Mendez heard the whole special anniversary program from *1305 to 1613* direct to Spain. Is this in addition to, or instead of, ir/regular Wednesday broadcast? (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** ANTARCTICA. 15475.98-RCUSB, Oct 21 at 1540 check, no signal of LRA36 into Brasil SDR, so apparently no Wednesday show this week, having specialized on Tuesday. Now for Saturday? (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** ARGENTINA [non]. 5800, Oct 16 at 0218, surprised to hear YL in Japanese, not Chinese or Korean; but no longer surprised when after song at 0220 switches at 0221 to Brazuguese, from RAE. Relays via WRMI are still multi-lingual from homes, whatever the nominal language hour (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** ARMENIA. 7500, Oct 18 at *1657.6, carrier on from Gavar site, for five hours of publicized specials, S9+35/40 into UTwente SDR; 1659 open German announcement for first hour, from RAE marking anniversary of that service from Argentina; at 1702 I notice bad audio distortion; by 1725 it`s OK and S9+50. At 1800 still VG into English for tribute to CAE, Canadian Forces station in Germany: I`m sure this is all significant and nostalgic to the parties involved, but too much else going on now for me to dedicate 4 or 5 hours of my attention (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** ASCENSION. 7305, Oct 16 at 0629, one B-B-C chime sequence and opening with drumming in presumed Hausa as scheduled until 0700, 125 kW, 55 degrees; very poor (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** BOLIVIA [and non]. 3310, Oct 18 at 0106, JBA talk maybe in Quechua, presumed Radio Mosoj Chaski, known to be active as only CP on 90m. Signal is fading S4-S6, so not the local mix between KGWA and KCRC which used to block it, 2 x 960 plus 1390 = 3310. These two have surprisingly cleaned up from years past their harmonix and intermodulations, not much on 2880 or 4170, still some 2780 (Glenn Hauser, Enid OK, WOR) ** BRAZIL. 6135.083, Oct 16 at 0638, soft music at S5-S7, presumed always off-frequency R. Something`s always wrong at RHC (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** CUBA. 5040, Oct 16 at 0622, RHC English carrier is still on at S9+20 with maybe trace of modulation. Turnoff time of this varies widely, with or without programming. Ron Howard says my JBA carrier on 5040 would not have been Vanuatu, still on 3945 + harmonix of that (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** CUBA. 6008-6052 range, Oct 16 at 0632, pulse jamming splattering out of full bore on 6030 despite OCB being off after 0400 for months, tnx to the incompetent and wasteful Jamming Command where something is always beyond wrong (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** CUBA. 15140, Oct 16 at 1419, RHC missing, while 15230 is still on at S8 but just barely modulated. Something`s always wrong at RHC (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** CUBA. 5122.5 approx., Oct 18 at 0042, spurblob I suspect out of 5040 RHC as previously logged, at 2 x 41+ kHz interval, while if any around 5081 it`s blocked by 5085 WTWW sideband. First-order-minus would be just below 5000 WWV but not detected there; however, second-order-minus finds something about 4957.5 JBA with telltale F# tone. Something`s always wrong at RHC (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** CUBA [and non]. 4782.5 approx., Oct 18 at 0042, distorted spurblob with enough music mod to make it // 4765 Radio Progreso. Then I look for a minus-match and find approx. 4748.5 vs CODAR; but these are not equally apart. Rather diffuse as I try to guesstimate their centers, so make them about 4782 and 4748. Something`s always wrong at RadioCuba. BTW, Lúcio Otávio Bobrowiec in Brasil has been hearing Radio Huanta Dos Mil, Perú on 4764 before Cuba starts by 0030. I`ve yet to catch it; Aoki shows 0100*, EiBi 0200*, also *1047-1330, while Aoki shows *1100 straight thru on original 4747; EiBi on 4747.6 (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** CUBA. 6000, Oct 18 at 0053, RHC English is S9+35 but suptorted, JBM, unlike // 6145. QRMs even whatever be on 6115, Congo or Japan. Something`s always wrong at RHC. 6130-6155, Oct 19 at 0552, RHC also overmod/distorted and splattering out of 6145. Austria USB barely escapes. Something`s always wrong at RHC. Other // 6000, Oct 19 at 0553, is S9+20 but JBM and not a splatter problem. Something`s always wrong at RHC (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** CUBA. 5025, Oct 20 at 0230, R. Yet RHC manages S9 on 6000 & 6145 English. Nor can I detect any OCB DRM on 7340-7345-7350. It`s almost if the multi-decade Cuban Radio War be over. Or, propagation? K-index climbing from 1 to 3 between 00 and 03 UT (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** CUBA [non]. 5800, UT Sat Oct 17 at 0300, I haven`t rechecked WRMI-10 in quite a while since discovering the surprise new Radio República transmission instead of via France, [which is still VG on 9490 before 0300] on UT Fri-Sat-Sun-Mon, which is *still secret*, only blank spaces on System H program grid [but with `Viva Miami` intruding at 0300-0330 {sic} on UT Sun & Mon.] Yes, there it is at S9+20/30 opening `Alternativa` program announced as ``Radio Martí y Radio República se unen para presentarles Alternativa``, subject being Chile. First I know of those two anti-Castroism stations joining programming. However, not simulcast, something else now on RM 6030 (Glenn Hauser) ** CUBA. 7340-7345-7350, Oct 18 at 0055, Radio Martí DRM is missing, just the jamming, while the bookend AM frequencies inboom above their jammings on 7365 & 7335. VG, and way above jamming now, if any; cannot really hear any nor on // 11860, 11930. 11930, Oct 21 at 1657, Radio Martí has more QRM from a second weaker broadcaster making a SAH of about 8 Hz, than from any jamming. This would be its only other competitor for 11930, Voice of TURKEY also in Spanish! at 1630-1728, 500 kW due west from Emirler, intended for España only. Furthermore, from it I hear a 5+1 timesignal at 1700, the last pip prolonged at same pitch, but not prepared to rate it vs WWV. Has Cuban jamming been eliminated or reduced? At 2015 check, RM is still very strong on 11930, 11860, 9565*; but a bit of jamming under is JBA during pauses. No RM DRM noise to be heard on 7340-7345-7450. Is that experiment over? RF 13, KETA 13 via Suddenlink cable in Enid has continued defective sound of mono only, but during PBS `Nature` about cats, Oct 17 at 1939 UT, it suddenly blossoms into $tereo! But for only two minutes, 1941 back to mono also with a slight video glitch as if deliberately switching source inputs. Shux (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** OKLAHOMA. RF 19, Oct 17 after 0200 UT, my ATSC 1.0 converter box still displays no signal from KAUT ``Freedom 43`` which is allegedly still on there having changed to ATSC 3.0 system. So again I go looking for it elsewhere. The STB still remembers when KAUT RF channel was 40, before 19, with duplicate 43+s. But might as well delete the 40s. Now it *does* display the four KAUT channels with PSIP IDs: 43-1 KAUT-DT 43-2 Court 43-3 Escape 43-4 Cozi And on the STB one can tell the real RF channel for these is 27! Which is really KFOR, which has its own four virtual channels if you start out with channel 4. My Sanyo TV however, will not tell you what RF channels it is really getting, and for some strange reason does display 43-4, 43-3, 43-2 but NOT KAUT itself on 43-1! Go figure. BTW, KAUT call memorializes Gene Autry, original owner. A tech school in Enid is named for another Autry (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** OKLAHOMA. October 18 circa 0125 UT, further exploration of where to find KAUT OKC in ATSC 1.0: on the rabbit-ears thru STB set, no 43-1; but 43-2 CourtTV and 43-3 Escape/Mystery are on RF 24, which is KOKH Fox ``25``! But 43-4 Cozi is on RF 33, which is KOKH`s sibling station KOCB ``34``. Back on the broken roof level antenna thru a different STB at 0310: the same for those three, but 43-1 KAUT is coming from RF 27 which is KFOR. What a jumble as repacking and ATSC 3.0 transition proceeds (Glenn Hauser, Enid, WOR) ** PALAU. 9900, Oct 15 at 0904, when I happen to awaken, no signal from T8WH which was going to start testing at 0800. Lúcio Otávio Bobrowiec, Brasil, has been reporting R. Huanta 2000 on 4764, ex 4747v, as IDed by Rafael Rodríguez. A few minutes earlier I was seeking it via several SDRs, in Brasil, Chile, Argentina, Bonaire but none of them got any more than a JBA carrier either. At 0049 with R. Progreso on 4765, I could barely detect a JBA het on its minus. Why in the world would RH2K move from a clear frequency to collide with Cuba? Maybe out of control, but has lasted for several days (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** PERU. 4764, Oct 21 at 0058, JBA carrier from presumed Radio Huanta 2000, with 4765 cleared by absent CUBA. Also JBA signal on 4775v, no doubt the other OA, Radio Tarma. Lúcio Otávio Bobrowiec also reports RH2K on the WOR iogroup, tonight at 2337 Oct 20: ``Hello, R. NOT confirmed on any WRMI 7780 broadcast, UT Mon Oct 19 at 0130 or 0230, as this transmitter is still off the air. Bob Biermann of WRMI explained, ``Transmitter 1 is the oldest unit operating at WRMI. It is probably close to 60 years of age and originally was in the site up in Massachusetts. It is a Gates unit, so repairs may not be easy, and don’t expect anyone outside of “World’s Last Chance” to be buying a new transmitter anytime soon.`` Nothing about this on WRMI FB, its preferred method of listener contact. Richard Langley, NB: ``This is the same transmitter (#1) that was damaged in August and repaired. At that time, WRMI switched all programming on 7780 kHz over to 15770 kHz. I`m trying out the temporary until Oct 25 KiwiSDR that Bill Whitacre has set up in Lubec, which is on the coast in the SE corner of Maine, a hot spot for trans-Atlantic MW DX. There is *too much*, audio almost every 9 kHz; where are the JBA carriers I can sweep across in only 5 minutes? Contrary to KiwiSDR boilerplate, this one does not work on Firefox, but does work on IE. I find it already set up at 9 kHz intervals, which can be toggled to 10; but above 1600 it switches to 5-kHz steps, strange. I`m not counting countries from here or anywhere, so some assumptions without consequences follow, but open to revision. LSS at Lubec today: 2135 UT, so the DX should have been in a lot earlier. This is off-and-on for less than a sesquihour, Oct 19 from 2103, in chrono order, reference WRTH listings, u.o.s.: 1521, at 2103 the first thing I check for is the 2-megawatt Riyadh program via Duba, NW corner of SAUDI ARABIA, and there it is in Arabic, S5-S7. Now closes circa 2230, so tough to get into deep North America; when it ran all-night, at least a het against 1520 KOKC was common. But at midwinter I even had it, I think, around local noon, as reported at that time. 1512, at 2118, Arabic from the other SAUDI ARABIA, only one megawatt from Jeddah, Qur`an program via Khumra site, somewhat east of Mecca. 1503, at 2119, Castilian; 2130 characteristic half-hour time signal from SPAIN and RNE ID: Radio 5 has only two outlets, 5 and 2 kW. 1467, at 2131, ME music and Arabic, S9+5, presumably TWR Monaco via megawatt Roumoules, FRANCE, but no language details in WRTH. A 50 kW Sa`udi is also on 1467. 1450, at 2131, as I am tuning past 1449, can`t miss an ID for ``CFAB 1450 AM`` which is U1 1/1 kW Windsor, Nova Scotia, in the centre between Dartmouth and Wolfville, CANADA. 1413, at 2132, Castilian: RNE Radio 5, SPAIN, has 3 outlets, 5, 10, 20 kW. 1377, at 2133, intriguing low-audible-het between weak carriers. Major signal should be the megawatt TWR in ARMENIA at .0002. Only likely offals are two 50 kW from IRAN on .914 and .97, mwoffsets 1314, at 2135, Castilian among the CCI: again from SPAIN, three of RNE Radio 5 at 20, 10 and 10 kW. 1305, at 2136, good signal in Castilian: SPAIN, four x RNE Radio 5 of 20, 20, 10 and 25 kW. I often have JBA carrier(s) here direct. 531 // 549, at 2139, pop music, no doubt JIL FM, ALGERIA. 600 kW each, common carriers over here. 1530, at 2157, I`m standing by to hear even a trace of Yankee Doodle, from the VOA Pinheira, SAO TOME 2200 sign-off, as often recommended by Mark Connelly, but no luck. However, a jumble of weak signals is suddenly eclipsed by one station from *2159, ID as WVBF and on FM 99.7, AC (780) phone fits for Boston-suburban area ring as this is from Middleborough Center, Massachusetts; and into reading anti-Trump editorial from Bloomberg News. The trouble is, 2200 UT is FCC October local sunset for WVBF [November: 2130] when it is supposed to drop from 940 watts ND critical hours to FOUR WATTS NIGHT power. Day power is 5 kW, both direxional broadly toward the northeast, i.e. Lubec. Instead they have powered *up*! Anyhow, seems like an interesting station, per NRC AM Log, ``Hometown Talk Radio``, address in Taunton MA. 1530, at 2200, also has a 6-pip timesignal, very unlikely from any North American station; probably one of two 15-kW from ROMANIA, otherwise 3 kW from MADEIRA. In fact at 2219 recheck, Romanian conversation, not Portuguese. {someone`s recording of Romania on 1179 has same 6-pip timesignal, equally spaced, all same pitch} 1188, at 2220, strumming at S7, ``Payam`` ID in passing, i.e. 300 kW from Tehran, IRAN; and not the only other possibility, 400 kW Hungary 1179, at 2224, Castilian announcement, thought they mentioned ``Cadena EFE``, but listed as Cadena SER, two in Iberia, one in Canarias. SER could have been referring to the related? news agency EFE. Also another language mixing, probably ROMANIA, 400 kW. 1458, at 2223, song, maybe ROMANIA, 100 kW strongest on frequency. Both Actualitatsi program but unseem //, If one had the time, one could employ this device for more challenging DX, even in Lubec terms, let alone deep North America, from further into AfroAsia. OTOH, one could do the same via numerous less temporary SDRs in Eurafrica. OTOOH, Bill will probably activate it again sometimes. Anyhow it`s notable how much MWDX can easily make it into our Atlantic Northeast (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** U S A. Re: ``BTW, I`ve almost quit bandscanning above RF 37 due to progressive repacking; but I see lots and lots of 38+ are still listed at W9WI.com; do they really still exist? (Glenn Hauser, Enid OK, WOR)`` Doug Smith, W9WI, replies Oct 16 on the WTFDA gg: ``LPTV stations are allowed to continue above RF-37 until July 13th, 2021 IF they don't interfere with land-mobile operations. A quick check of the FCC DB shows approximately 180 digital LPs and 200 analogs still authorized to operate in channels 38-51. Some of these are probably actually operating below channel 38 under program test authority or Special Temporary Authority (for example, KQCT-LP in the Quad Cities, which is still licensed on channel 61 but has a CP for 32 and is operating there.) I would keep scanning above 37. There isn't much left up there, but as a result there isn't much interference (at least, as long as you're not surrounded by T-Mobile 5G)`` (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** VENEZUELA. 6906.08-RCUSB, Oct 17 at 0155, quick check via TWR Bonaire SDR, ROCV is audible; also at 0348 songs at S5-S7 (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** VENEZUELA. 6906.3v-CUSB, Oct 19 at 0332, presumed ROCV = LV del Tigre relay is only JBA S3 into Bonaire SDR (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** VENEZUELA. 6905.80?-RCUSB, Oct 20 at 0328, LV del Tigre relay by ROCV has considerable reduced carrier by offtuning, but hardly any modulation; frequency seems to have varied slightly as I try to pinpoint it.
