** ALGERIA [non]. 13820, July 2 at 1828, RTA via FRANCE starts ENGLISH segment, YL historical artistic talk about a painter whose name I never catch, continuous music background. 1836 into another feature, `Destination: Algeria` tourist talk by OM about the sights in the northeast, then northwest; 1841 into Spanish, weekly Latin American correspondent in Bs. As. about the COVID-19 situation especially in Brasil. Tnx to Pedro Sedano, Spain, who tipped us on the WOR iogroup that this hour only carries the International domestic network, not just Arabic/Qur`an and some French but also English circa 1830 and Spanish like this. Times could be 1 minute off as I recorded during significantly home-grown salad lunch and did not listen until later. {Also today employing the defective self-beeping ISS transmitter.} AFAWK, this is the only time for English on SW, other than some scattered IDs. Monitored here VG via UTwente SDR; didn`t try direct but probably would hear more Cuban jamming against no Martí than RTA. This hour on one frequency only. Also reported by Alan Roe, UK, and via UTw, Richard Langley, NB (Glenn Hauser, OK, WORLD OF RADIO 2041) ** ALGERIA [non]. 7295, July 4 at 0543, RTA, Arabic via FRANCE with the self-QRMing beeping Issoudun transmitter. BTW, that was also applied to 13820 during the July 2 English segment around 1830; but you never know which transmitter will be in use at which time on which frequency of RTA, RFI, or some other relay, from one day to the next (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** ALGERIA [non]. 13820, Saturday July 4 at 1830, RTA International via FRANCE, again with beepery, but no English, just Arabic, 1836 into Spanish with lite French accent but also has to pronounce properly names in Arabic. Via UTwente SDR. Richard Langley, NB reports there was no English during entire 18-19 hours July 3 or 4: ``It seems they take pieces of the different language segments from the programs on their Internet/FM/satellite broadcasts (in English, for example): https://www.radioalgerie.dz/rai/en/emissions/list Some information (in English) about Radio Algérie Internationale: https://www.radioalgerie.dz/rai/en/emissions/list%EF%BB%BF The "funky" transmitter was used again today for the international broadcast. -- Richard Langley`` (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** ANTARCTICA. 15476-, July 8 at 1427, no signal here from LRA36, as sometimes achieves over mostly-water path from Esperanza to Enid, so is it still active Wednesdays around 1400-1600v? Hard to tell with that but own modulation may also be defective. Best tuned to 15475.96-USB. One peak QRMs the 11150 above, and another is centered about 9395, bad news for hearing anything on WRMI-6 (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** CHINA. Something`s always wrong at RHC. Was still tuned to 11670 after Spain check at 2200 (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** CUBA. 13766 & 13635 approx., July 7 at 1339, JBA spurblobs out of 13700 RHC, plus & minus 64-65 kHz, trace of F# tones, first time detected in weeks, but hardly up to par. Mark Coady, Ont., also mentioned not hearing it in his July 7 report but without a specific date and time, assuming that was due to poor propagation. But something`s always wrong at RadioCuba (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** CUBA. 5040, July 8 at 0545, RHC in wrong language, still Spanish instead of English so not // 6000 JBM, 6145 undermod, and 6100 best, plus second harmonic 12200, S9/+10 at 0553. Mentions ``Cuba libre``, ending newscast with rooster crow. Caught my attention in bandscan since this far off-frequency, unusual for Issoudun if FRANCE still be the site with RMI the go-between broker rather than just putting it on much closer Okeechobee. Europe is hot tonight, 9420 Greece also inbooming with its musical alternative (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** CUBA [non]. Radio Martí is still on the air as usual July 9 at 0008, tho I can`t vouch for program content, 5980, 6030, 7335, 7365 and DRM 7345, all in well at TWR Bonaire and without any jamming audible there. Open carrier on at tune-in, VG signal with usual QRM de 7291 RTTY and splashes from 10 kHz plus and minus; a few sex before 1759 cut on modulation amid Aïda theme --- which is not always to be heard at all; just before 1800 very brief sign-on and right into `Feature Story News` for 5 minutes, not just headlines, starting with Bolsonaro gets it, CV situation in Australia; 1803 sports segment. 1805 no program intro but a fan of Danny Doyle starts talking and eventually plays a song of his; very Irish. He died last August, so this is not news now: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Danny_Doyle_(singer) Ireland, you know, is the real corporate HQ of IRRS, not Italy; tax haven? 1832 recheck, still modulating and `AWR Wavescan` is underway, same as heard earlier via Zambia, first item about past clandestines in New Hebrides/Vanuatu. Later about Gough Island, beyond Tristan da Cunha, whence we learn it`s pronounced Goff, as webresearch suggests, even tho there are no inhabitants now to ask. https://www.howtopronounce.com/gough Like ``cough`` tho one example is more like ``guff``. Recheck 1858 whether `WS` will get chopped off like Dan Roberts? Yes, IRRS sign-off at 1859, but only as Jeff is reciting the postal address in closing (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** IRELAND [non]. 7290, July 8 at 1800, another anomaly check of IRRS, ITALY [non] via BULGARIA, via UTwente SDR: Aïda and quick sign-on, right into `Life Matters`, anti-abortion far-Christian show. But the Wednesday schedule on nexus-iba website claims instead `Hope for Today`, so it`s out of date, even more so still showing `War Room Pandemic` at 1700, cancelled a couple months ago (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** KOREA NORTH. 13760.201, July 2 at 1337, VOK exactly same remeasured off-frequency for second day in a row, S3-S5, usual syrupy choral music from paradise (Glenn Hauser, OK, WORLD OF RADIO 2041) ** KOREA NORTH. 13760.2, July 4 at 1429, JBA carrier from presumed VOK still way off-frequency (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** KOREA NORTH. 6045, July 6 at 1339, nothing but noise jamming. Ron Howard upon Asilomar State Beach, California, agrees: ``KOREA NORTH/SOUTH. 6045, Voice of Freedom, on 1119+, on July 6. Totally blocked by super strong white noise jamming from N. Korea. The former enjoyable reception of VOF has come to an end for the time being!`` I also have an unjammed? signal on 5990, presumably Echo of Hope, South to North Korea as Ron also confirms (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** KOREA NORTH. 13760.2, July 6 at 1346, JBA carrier presumed still VOK knocked off frequency (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** MEXICO. 6185-, July 8 at 0548, at first seems XEPPM is AWOL, no signal, but then a JBA carrier and offset-minus, so probably it but QRP, exciter only? (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** NIGERIA. 7255- & 9690-, July 3 at 0606, VON is gone again from both possible frequencies. Ditto July 4 at 0558 (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** NIGERIA. 7254.9, July 5 at 0613, VON manages to be on air today at S9/+10 in presumed Hausa (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** NIGERIA. 11769.904V, slightly unstable, July 8 at 0554, guess what, VON is trying a third frequency for the 0600 Hausa broadcast, instead of 7254.9 or 9689.9, both of which have been heard recently but vacant now. Or a mistake? This is normally its evening channel only. HOA-type music at tune in; 0558 IS of drum and flutish; 0600 first spoken word is ``Nigeria``. This is the SSOB, equivalent to 12200 Cuba harmonic, stronger than 11895 Chinese, i.e. CNR1 jammer vs RFA via Saipan, and much stronger than 11835 Vanuatu harmonic. What`s next, 15120? (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** NIGERIA [and non]. 11770, since it appeared earlier July 8 for the 0600 VON broadcast, I wonder if it be on for the scheduled evening transmissions, or instead one of the other channels? At 1907, no reception here. At 1930 I tune UTwente SDR, to find 7255 occupied by Türkish from CRI Kunming site, CHINA; 9690 occupied by SPAIN with no het; but something very weak about 11769.9 vs huge splash from 11775 CRI German via Kashgar, EAST TURKISTAN. Checking Kiwi SDRs, there are only two in the entire continent of Africa, both in RSA, and TWR one tuned has no reception on 11770. However, the closest S American one in Pernambuco does get a weak African signal on 11769.9 (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** OKLAHOMA. Re: 1270 KRXO in Tulsa [now in Spanish // 107.9]. Yes Glenn, KRXO abruptly changed their format a few weeks ago. Re my 1270 KRXO log now //107.9 translator, Chris KC5IIE, Krug, Tulsa, replies: ``Oops! I stand corrected Glenn, 107.7 "The Franchise" is in OKC, that explains why I don`t hear it. 107.9 is the FM outlet for 1270 KRXO, it is simulcasting their programming. Sorry for the confusion, 73 and Happy 4th!`` (Glenn Hauser, Enid, WOR) ** OKLAHOMA. 89.5, July 8 at 0240 UT and beyond, still there at 1550, strong open carrier with $tereo pilot on, encountered as I am fruitlessly bandscanning for sporadic E DX since there`s a 106 MHz MUF spike around Wyoming. 89.5 is one of our few almost-open frequencies. Nearest full-powers are KWGS in Tulsa and KHCD in Salina, but there is no enhancement from other stations in those areas and both are normally inaudible. Perhaps a neighbor`s unoccupied RF feeder? Certainly not mine. Cuts itself off at 1627* as I had forgotten I had a receiver tuned to it. There is no local translator info in FCC for this frequency; it has been used by Part 15 devices for Xmas specials (Glenn Hauser, Enid OK, WOR) ** SAUDI ARABIA. 11820.045, July 7 circa 2000, Arabic bits alternating with Qur`aning, JBA but sufficiently soporific to accompany my napping. Alan Roe had reported that the `Letterbox` had finally resumed after a long COVID-19 break, when he heard it on the real 1230 broadcast on 15450, but not the exact time, so I keep listening and note a bunch of different features before it, starting with news on a variety of subjects, and then: 2210 Turkish Press; 2212 Foreign Press; 2214 Turkey leads in aromatic plants; 2217 Today in History; 2219 Ephesus; 2222-2240 Letterbox program, ``been a long time``. Usual announcer very informal and seemingly opening letters for the first time, from: Stu Forsyth in NZ; China; Stefan Korona, Sweden; Pakistan; UAE-Sharjah; Moscow; Pakistan; UK; Japan; Brasil; Montgomery/Chicago? USA; Brasil; Malaysia. ``Next L`box in a week, goodbye.`` I did not check 9830 for direct reception here until 2246, when I found it poor S6-S9 with music. As Alan Roe outpoints, ``It seems that some normality is returning to the English service of Voice of Turkey. The programme today (Wednesday 8 July) heard at 1230 UT on 15450 kHz included the first edition of the Letterbox Programme for many weeks. The announcer acknowledged that this was the first edition following the impact of the global coronavirus pandemic in Turkey. I had heard Letterbox on Wednesdays back in February, so it looks like this is the confirmed day for the programme. I still need to confirm, however, whether or not Letterbox is repeated in its old slot on Saturdays. Has been repeating 24 hours later on 7490v at least, but not this week, as UT Sun July 5 at 0000-0100 is when Uncle Bill`s much-publicized 4th of July musical special is due, on 7490+v and 6159.9v. Unfortunately simultaneously with `A Capitol Fourth` on PBS-TV, but repeated a sesquihour later at least on OETA; and CNN`s 4OJ special at 0000-0400 UT, not to mention countless local events, including Enid, where the Enid Symphony Orchestra is barreling ahead with its traditional performance at Meadowlake Park despite the risks; people are encouraged to spread out as there is plenty of space around the lake, but in best of times getting in and out is problematic, e.g. avoiding those burning poison gas, i.e. smokers who think it`s OK as long as it`s outside; and parking is a nightmare. I urged conductor Doug Newell to reconsider; what about the musicians crammed under the canopy? The windy ones at least cannot be masked. How about recording and/or broadcasting it? He says they don`t have the rights to do so, which would be an additional expense. The concert is always free to the public, underwritten this year by Security National Bank. Starts around 0130 UT after a full day schedule of other risky events at the Park, and to accompany fireworx circa 0230 when it`s finally darkening. To avoid the hassles, the past few years we have been attending instead dress rehearsals at 4 pm Saturday back in Symphony Center, but not this year in that enclosed and possibly crowded venue. The fireworx can of course be seen from a considerable distance away, but the music inaudible. Years before I had tried to get them to employ a Part 15 FM transmitter for better sound than over the loudspeakers, and maybe audible just outside the park in cars. Nix. ESO apparently is itching to get going again with no performances since March, the final scheduled concert of the year, an all-Beethoven bash in April for season subscribers only, postponed. BTW, there aren`t enough local musicians to form an orchestra, so ESO has to draw in others from elsewhere in OK. As a 50-K city, we are lucky to have it and hope all of them survive (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** U S A. ``Hello Glenn, Happy 4th of July, Based on SDR trolling and some listener check-ins, the WBCQ 4th of July in the Park should have done OK near you although there was some storm activity in parts of the region. The next special will be Labor Day, again a multi-program effort. Although I am serving as cat-herder as Uncle Bill, the larger purpose is to showcase WBCQ's music programs generally, and I hope that the other programs (Marion's Attic, Behavior Night, Lost Discs, Rock Wave and others) also attract new listeners, and perhaps this might even inspire some aspiring radio host to start a new program as well. At a minimum, we hope to serve as a reminder that music on licensed broadcast shortwave (not just pirates) is very much alive. Best, William "Bill" Tilford, Owner/Producer, Tilford Productions, LLC`` 0222 UT July 5. My reply: ``Hi Bill, Enjoyed it. Since I was at the computer instead of the SW radio, I could not resist listening via the WBCQ stream. I am ashamed? Anyhow some of it was in $tereo and the scratches were clearer, hi. As you know, SW from `BCQ is not the best here, even without storms, and especially without 500 kW. I compare to other WWCRs and other BS: 9980, WWCR-4 is blasting with Overcomer alone; 9455, WRMI likewise; not // other WWCRs, 12160 with political huxter, and 13845 with Dead Gene Scott; BTW, 13845 is relatively weak compared to 12160 & 15825, which does not make sense propagationally; must axually be underpowered. But what is the second audio? At 2023 I concentrate on that for a while; maybe same program, closing with contact info including website several times, reallifewithjackkidd.org --- not sure about the Kidd as he never spells it. Also phone 877-777-2346, and P O Box 12, somewhere with ZIP 91709; 2025 into USA Radio News, which of course is also far-right, far-Christian slanted, a perfect fit. 91709 is Chino Hills, San Bernardino county, California. Since the other WWCR transmitters are otherwise occupied, could this be bleeding from co-located AM subsidiary, 1300 WNQM? No program schedule at http://www.1300wnqm.com/ but does list programs for linkages without times at http://www.1300wnqm.com/pgm-links_wnqm.html but nothing resembling that described above. Suddenlink search is smart enough to figure out it`s really this: https://reallifewithjackhibbs.org/ So direct look at it: https://reallifewithjackhibbs.org/listen/ leading to what matches today`s very episode: ``Being A Christian While Being A Kid – C - July 7, 2020 - Colossians 1:9-14`` Those verses are about indoctrination, per my free NIV pocket ``The Way for Cowboys`` Bible handed out years ago at an Enid Expo home show. Of course, kids are religion-free until elders start implanting something. Never mind WNQM, not on the roster. Belatedly I check WWCR-1 program sked, and bingo, there is Real Radio, with Jack Hibbs M-F at 2000-2030 UT, so B.S. is the intruder now on 15825, not vice versa. There is probably a pot dedicated to TOMBS on the audio mixer feeding #1 transmitter, which has been left open as well as the intended program source. Can it be that at 1300 WWCR Avenue, no one is listening to their own station? Then how can they expect anyone else to? I certainly would not unless I run across something wacko like this.
