** ALGERIA [non]. 7295, April 8 at 0543, Arabic talk, not Qu`ran, as RTA via FRANCE is scheduled this hour only. But strangely, also jammed by rapid tone pips, or carriers beating, measured about 0.7 kHz both above and below, circa 7294.3 and 7295.7. Nothing else scheduled here worthy of jamming. Maybe by Ameriham p-o`d over this intrusion? (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** ANGUILLA. 11775 nor 6090, April 5, it`s dawning on me that the so-called Caribbean Beacon has not been heard for a while, a week or more. Easy to miss due to convoluted ``schedule``. Mark Coady on the ODXA iog April 5: ``A fellow ham radio operator from Peterborough, Ontario, winters for over a month or two with his wife on the island of Anguilla. They recently had their first cases of the COVID-19 virus on the island, apparently brought in by recent tourists from the US and his return flight has been cancelled. On top of not knowing when he can come home, he noted that he hasn't heard the Caribbean Beacon on 1610 lately and I haven't heard them on shortwave either. Pastor Melissa Scott is still on WWCR but I wonder if the Caribbean Beacon is another COVID-19 casualty for now. Has anyone been hearing them on 6090 or 11775 lately?`` 1610 has been off for a long time (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** ANTARCTICA. 15475.97-CUSB, April 7 at 1420 tune-in past 1435+, JBA carrier direct over the almost all-water path from Esperanza to Enid, as I have not been able to detect for some time amid several special LRA-36 transmissions; it`s about equivalent to 15825 WWCR normal signal now without any sporadic-E boost. By 1452 I`m on the Campo Brasil KiwiSDR for poor partially readable signal: mainly two YL voices, with saludos; 1456 song; 1502 contact info; then my pause for breakfast of waffle; 1531 music; 1536 echo feedback announcement, deliberate? more song; 1540 ID, contact info; 1552 fading up a bit stronger, song; 1556 full ID, and bit of English in a song about telephone; 1603 sounds like an old-time-radio clip, 1606 gone and apparently not coming back. Anyway, used up my 60-minute per day limit on this SDR (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** ARGENTINA [non]. 9395, April 3 at 2113, the ``Italian`` hour of RAE via WRMI has W&M in French discussion, presumably substitute for real programming; 2116 music break; 2118 into English with Fernando recording from home, always off-the-cuff but maybe same thing we have heard before; music, at 2123 over to Chinese YL, as presumably they are running thru all 8 languages during the hour (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** AUSTRALIA. 11825, April 2 at 1447, YL with slow story in English, S9-S7; 1453 fading as OM explains story a little less slowly. Off at 1500 recheck. HFCC shows at 1430-1500 it`s KNX = Reach Beyond Australia, Kununurra. Probably the `Spotlight` evangelical show masquerading as language lesson (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** AUSTRIA. 6155, April 8 at 0549, classical music at S9/+10, better signal than usual, but noisy, in the last remnant of SW programming from this country, the token relay of Ö1 scheduled with 300 kW ND at 0500-0620 except Sat/Sun to 0610. Remember when the end of this used to include a few minutes of news in English? Not any more. But I go looking for the website (not included on Hitlist --- Alan?) and finally find this for today at 7:33-7:52 am local time: https://radiothek.orf.at/oe1/20200408/600688 Audio and playlist of this `Guten Morgen Österreich` segment starting with Brahms. The transmission is on the news network but includes bits of classical music apparently promoting what will be played in full later (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** AUSTRIA. John Figliozzi replies on the WOR iog to my 6155 log: ``OK, it’s not on HF and it’s not classical music… but those looking for English language news from Austria will find plenty of it on the bilingual (German/English) ORF domestic youth network fm4 streamed over the Internet from: https://fm4.orf.at John Figliozzi`` (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** CHINA. 7810, April 7 at 2222, JBA talk vs S5-S6 noise level. Unusual to hear anything here, but yes, it`s one of a multitude of Sound of Hope frequencies; Aoki/NDXC shows 24 hours including the single hour in Cantonese at 15-16, 1 kW via Miaoli, Taiwan site and of course *jammed, surely what I am hearing instead, CNR1. Looking for any other E Asian signals on 7 MHz band, finds JBA talk on 7395, which could be CNR2 via Xianyang 594 site or CRI Chinese via Urumqi, EAST TURKISTAN, land of imprisoning and brainwashing Uyghurs. This week`s FRONTLINE on PBS is an excellent hour about this issue: "China Undercover" New, 4/07/2020, Season 37 / Episode 18, Investigative, Documentary, Politics, Public Affairs, Social Topic "Frontline" delivers a special undercover report from China's secretive Xinjiang region, where the communist regime has imprisoned masses of Muslims and is testing sophisticated surveillance technology on the population. Something`s sometimes right at RadioCuba (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** CUBA. 711.00, April 2 at 0558, the + 1 kHz off-frequency carrier from presumed R. Rebelde, but no modulation, is still there hetting legit 710.00 kHz stations; and this time can detect a beat from a second carrier about 1 Hz away instead of 3.33; another Cuban, or TA, at least one of which has varied frequency (Glenn Hauser, OK, WORLD OF RADIO 2028) ** CUBA [and non]. Further discussion on the IRCA iog about the 711 kHz carriers I have been reporting: ``What is being heard on 711 by east coast folks? Steve Ratzlaff Apr 2 #7576 --- Lately 711 and 891 are often equal strength hets. I only get occasional traces of 711 audio, and lately not much more on 891. What do you east coast folks normally hear on 711? Tnx. Steve in AZ`` ``And, in Steve's case, as he was hearing Algeria on 891, maybe both Cuba and Morocco? (though then there might be a subaudible heterodyne as well. A late fade out time would eliminate Morocco, and MWoffsets says that Morocco is a few Hertz low as well. The 711 that I see here seems to be spot on channel. best wishes, Nick Hall-Patch, BC`` ``Mauno_Ritola Apr 3 #7584 --- At 1525 Florida Perseus shows a carrier on 711.001 kHz. Cuban on both antennas later into the evening but better on south beam not surprisingly. Cuba the only 711 post 0600 UT. What anyone gets on 711 is a factor of time, location, propagation, and antenna. I have not done precision frequency measurement on either of the 711 signals recently though I suspect that Mauno will have all the info here soon. Morocco (W. Something`s always wrong at RadioCuba (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** CUBA. 5025, April 4 at 0536, Radio Rebelde music is suptorted, as it has been all evening, as often the case. Something`s always wrong at RadioCuba (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** CUBA. 13780, April 2 at 1443, RHC S9+10 of dead air; yes, back here after two mornings on 13740, ex-13780 since March 12. Something`s always wrong at RHC. 13700 is still modulating music at S9+20; no spurs (Glenn Hauser, OK, WORLD OF RADIO 2028) ** CUBA. 6145 & 6000, April 4 at 0534, RHC English equally weak and just barely modulated, while // 6060 & 6100 are both much stronger and well-modulated. 5040, last of The Cuban Five, is strong & loud enough, but with constant squeal and mush. Also, a JBA carrier on 6230, probably leapfrog mixing product of 6060 over 6145 another 85 kHz beyond. Something`s always wrong at RHC. BTW, I am assuming that there is no longer an English hour at 07-08, tho not awake that late to check; with only a fraxion of the Five remaining on at 06-07 (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** CUBA. 15140, April 4 at 1526, RHC S9+10 but horribly distorted, as this transmitter has been for many weeks now; have they no shame; or no way to fix it? Or substitute another unit? Plenty are available mid-day. Something`s always wrong at RHC (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** CUBA. 15140, April 4 at 1917, RHC English is not distorted for a change; a Jamaican loves Fidel. Distorted again next morning in Spanish. Something`s usually wrong at RHC. 15140, April 5 at 1934, is OFF, only frequency scheduled during first English hour of the day; 15370 is on, VG in French (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** CUBA. 13780 // 13700, the former with some hum, but no spurs anywhere, Sunday April 5 at 1336, RHC `En Contacto` has just started. This week it`s almost all Arnie talking about several subjects, lickety-split pace tripping over his tongue and hard for me to follow, while I can normally comprehend proper ``broadcast Spanish``. Well-worn subject of his fascination with TTFD antennas resurges: they are low-noise and good for T-E DX. Gives azimuths for English to N America frequencies, 325 degrees on 6145, and couldn`t catch that for 6000. If so, 6145 should be heard a lot better here in the boresight. Thought the YL announcer closing sounded like Marta Rios, but she gives totally different strange name. 1348 finishes already, on to `En Compañía del Doctor`, not topic-V but heart disease. BTW, on the positive side, the current `Nova` on PBS is about a possible immunotherapy cancer cure developed by Cuba; Americans illegally go there for treatment (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** CUBA. 11880, April 5 at 1358, S9+20 open carrier prior to CRI relay, 1400 modulation comes up right on cue! CRI Plus opening with news of China sending medical experts to help Philippines; somewhat undermodulated but sufficient (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** CUBA. 15370, April 5 at 2152, RHC is S9 of dead air; also 13740 S9+20 but cut off at 2153*. 11850 DA. 11880 DA at S8, this one warming up prior to nominal 2200 start, but what about the others? Spanish tarde supposedly starts at 2100, already modulating `Formalmente Informal` show on 11760 and much weaker 11670; at 2158, 9640 is too but suptorted. Something`s always wrong at RHC (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** CUBA. 11760, Sunday April 5 at 2254, second play of `En Contacto` I make a point of hearing, trying to copy details missed earlier tnx to Arnie`s hard-to-understand speech. The azimuth for 6145 he might have said 335 instead of 325 degrees (treinta sounds a lot like veinte), and still unreadable that for 6000. Closing credits uttered by the one who speaks, sounds like Yalina Cascaret, but no certainty about either spelling, instead of Marta Rios. This via Alexandria SDR, arriving somewhat distorted. Something`s always wrong at RHC. Searching for name on website goes nowhere. As for the azimuths, no RHC at all in boycotted HFCC; EiBi doesn`t deal with them at all; so that leaves Aoki/NDXC, FWIW. A-20 admits RHC info is still from B-19: 6000, 10 degrees from Quivicán; 6165, 340 degrees from Bauta. Yes, ``6165`` as NDXC never caught up with that change to 6145 months ago (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** CUBA. 6200, April 6 at 0551, JBA carrier, possibly leapfrog mixing product of RHC 6000 over 6100 another 100 kHz higher; but only if both now be really from same site rather than Titán and Bauta. Only thing listed is Lhasa, but midday there. 6000 is S9+20/30 not undermodulated for a change yet somewhat distorted; 6100 is S9+10/20 (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** CUBA. 6145 >> // JBM 6000, UT Wed April 8 at 0001 tune-in, RHC English already on amid Arnie on `DXers Unlimited` mit-week edition, in fact closing at 0002. This segment is normally in the middle of each English hour, like :25-:35 as in DX/SWL/MEDIA programs. RHC clox must be way off. Was English axually running on these frequencies from a semihour earlier? At 23-24 it would normally be on 5040 & 11880. Did not get around to checking whether subsequent repeats were also askew, at 01-07. Following DXUL, report from Puerto Rico on the COVID 19 situation there. Something`s always wrong at RHC (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** CUBA. 13650, April 8 at 2329, CRI relay `Portuguese` service of music only is S9+20/30 but extremely suptorted. Something`s always wrong at RadioCuba. Why in the world haven`t they just turned off this failed service months ago? (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** CUBA [and non]. 13605, April 3 at 1429, almost a week into A-20, now some jamming is becoming audible vs Radio Martí, and there is still some residual jamming on ex-13820 (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** CZECHIA [non]. 5800, April 4 at 0159, Radio Prague closing in English, WRMI Spanish ID, 0200 a minute of music in English until cut off the air at 0201*. Furthermore, the only time left for Tirana, 2030 on 15770, now shows Mon-Thu only, no longer Sat as I had recently mentioned, that replaced by something else. Haven`t heard them for a long time, probably more due to springtime propagation uptick, altho suspect operation may also be sporadic due to power shortages, etc. (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** MEXICO. 6185, April 7 at 2211, no trace of even JBA carrier from XEPPM. Manuel Méndez, Spain had reported it: ``6185, Radio Educación, Ciudad de México, back on air, heard 1820-1830, 06-04 via SDR Kiwi remote receiver in Brownsville, South Texas, identification and songs.`` 6185, April 8 at 0001, now I have a carrier, just barely? modulated, as so often before. 6185, April 8 at 1725, I myself tune the Brownsville SDR, courtesy of TWR, and find a fairly good and well-modulated signal in Spanish, interview about economy, water supply in Mexicali, class warfare, 1730 song break, slightly off-frequency-minus as usual; which has to be XEPPM during its secret daytime broadcast; why can`t they do so well at night? (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** MEXICO. 6185-, April 8 by 1907 UT, now I can pull a JBA carrier slightly off-frequency-minus as a 2-megameter day-path remnant of reactivated XEPPM (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** NEW ZEALAND. Doug Smith of W9WI.com replied March 30 on the WTFDA Forum to my recent TVDX logs: 03-30-2020, 07:11 AM ``KSBI’s permanent antenna is at the same height as KWTV’s auxiliary antenna. (I suspect it’s the same antenna) Because of their repack to a significantly lower channel – 23 vs. 51 – they would have faced a substantial power reduction. The FCC regards less power necessary to achieve the same coverage on a lower channel. It appears KSBI chose to take a height reduction instead. The channel 23 antenna is 331m above average terrain; the channel 51 unit was 458m. Best I can tell this change is permanent. I would imagine the higher power yields a more interference-immune signal for viewers in the immediate metropolitan OKC area, at the expense of those of you a bit further away. Next hour 16-17 in Uyghur for the brainwashed switches to Tinian, probably not so off, or at least differing (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** SAUDI ARABIA [and non]. April 2 from 1812, via UTwente SDR, I cycle thru the registered frequencies at this hour in HFCC B-19, since there is nothing, yet? for A-20, not even an ARS page in the broadcasters` list; and why is it Arabie Saoudite? O, yeah, English is a nothing language for this SWBC, merely imagining 5 hours of it from 1600 on 9840, so I check that first: 9840, April 2 at 1812, ME music but Voice of Turkey ID in German at a time it is supposed to appear, rather than after 2300 on 9830 failing to turn off after English should it occasionally succeed. Otherwise presume some are axually SA without digging deeper: 9580, nothing 6100, algo, Arabic from Jeddah scheduled but is anything from Jeddah? 9555, Arabic, mentions A-S; ACI from plus side 9675, Turkish 9870, Arabic JBA 11820.044, Arabic -- still not audible in OK 11915, Arabic much weaker 11930, Spanish from OCB mainly, maybe CCI SA 13720, nothing but noise (Glenn Hauser, OK, WORLD OF RADIO 2028) ** SAUDI ARABIA. 17615.064, April 6 at 1447, S5-S6 with music probably Qur`an, as this always-offfrequency makes a showing despite no registrations and nothing audible on 17660, 17705 or 17895; would be the OSOB except for JBA 17630 CRI Mali. Others have monitored extensively to confirm most but not all previously scheduled KSA broadcasts are still running, notably WOR iog members Dr Hansjoerg Biener and Wolfgang Bueschel; not including French, per Antoello Napolitano: ``Any idea for the French broadcast scheduled at 1355-1600 on 17660 kHz? I tried a number of times in the last days but nothing was detected. This has been quite regular for years so I am wondering if they stopped broadcasting in French (the only European language still used by Saudi Radio on shortwaves) or simply moved to a new frequency. I confirm, instead, the broadcast in Indonesian on 21670 kHz heard here in the South Italy on 4th April at 1017`` (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** SCOTLAND [non]. 5850 // 5010, UT Sun April 5 at 0100-0200, `Encore` classical music reconfirmed on both WRMI frequencies. (7490v) WBCQ webcast, UT Monday April 6 at 0000, after `Le Show` and a minute of dead air, ``William Tell Overture`` starts, so after a couple bonus weeks, Encore has been replaced by an Available Time Slot, primarily filled by AAAWWW; however at 0050 recheck there is music so must not have been an AW hosted show. 9455, UT Mon April 6 at 0200-0259, `Encore` via WRMI, good signal into remotes in NY state; website playlist still for last week (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** SOUTH CAROLINA [non]. 9955, April 4 at 1536, WRMI dead air but it`s just a pause in TOMBS, as this frequency has been extended on Saturdays only until 1600 in order to diffuse the *live* Overcomer Sabbath services, also running 1400-1600 on *nine* other WRMI transmitters! Is he still inviting girls onstage to grope them? Hard to tell on the radio, but BS may be confident he`s staying out of jail as charges against him have still not been resolved. Sabbath? as if a deity really cared which day it`s worshiped, weeks being totally artificial human constructs; just as gods are (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** SOUTH CAROLINA [non]. 5900, April 6 at 0103, Brother Scare on VP signal. Who needs it, with multiple WRMI, WBCQ, WWCR frequencies? HFCC shows BULGARIA available 24 hours with 250 kW on 306 beam toward WEu/NWAf, not NAm in same azimuth; but Aoki/NDXC shows TOM at 23-02, 50 kW at 126 degrees (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** SPAIN. 11670, April 5 at 2152+, I mentioned as a poor signal of RHC among others --- but as noted by wb and HFCC, Spain is now on 11670 in A-20 like previous A-seasons instead of 11685 in Bs, for Africa. Alan Roe reported to WOR iogroup: ``Programming on the Voice of Turkey (at least in the English service, I've not checked other languages yet) seems to be reduced to a 5 minute news programme and a repeat of "Turkey's Tourist Attractions" with the rest of the 50/55 minutes comprising Turkish music without announcements. Noted today (7 April during 1230 transmission on 15450 kHz) and also a couple of times over recent days when checked. I'm assuming another casualty of the Covid-19 pandemic. Preamps off to minimize overload on MW. 531, 549, 558(2), 603, 612, 621, 657*, 684+, 693(2), 711*, 729, 747, 774(2), 837, 882, 891**, 909, 936(2), 1026, 1044, 1098, 1107, 1116, 1125(2), 1134, 1152, 1179, 1215, 1296, 1305(2), 1314, 1422, 1476, 1503, 1539, 1566, 1575. *657 is unusual, probably Spain or Italy, usually blocked by WSCR IBOC; a bit of auroral weakening it, or off? As 710.0 unusually dominated by the on-frequency Rebelde, and yes still with that carrier on 711 which is not TA; no beat on it detected this time. **891 strongest of all, no doubt Algeria. (2)=at least two carriers beating a few Hz apart (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) Re my remark about getting TA carrier on 657 instead of IBOC noise from WSCR Chicago, Tom Jasinski, Joliet replies April 4: ``Glenn: The IBOC for WSCR 670 and WBBM 780 has been off for over a month now. Both stations now share the same tower. Tom Jasinski`` --- that`s also good for TA on 684 (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) UNIDENTIFIED. 5000-5004, April 2 at 2354, the rapid RTTY QRM to WWV is still here 24 hours later. It was being widely heard last night in the WOR iog, including: `` I’m hearing it here in upstate NY too at 0212 UTC. I doubt this is coming from WWV - it appears to be on the high side of 5 MHz. It almost buries WWV here in the East. Listening to a Kiwi in Kansas City, the noise is audible, but WWV is louder. Even on the Kiwi in Ft Collins itself, I can hear it in the background, but WWV is of course loud and clear. Jim Barrett - Elmira, NY`` ``Now, WWV's signal is stronger at 0243 UT, but RTTY is still very strong at 5000.63, 5001.49, 5002.32, 5003.19, 5004.0 kHz. Maybe it is Fax. If so it`s about 3 kHz wide. Chuck Gessner, W3ON`` ``I’ve been running TDOA analysis on various receivers in the Kiwi SDR network in the East and Midwest. It consistently shows a likely source along an axis from central Indiana, up towards Chicago. The transmission is indeed VERY strong on individual Kiwis near Chicago, Indianapolis and Minneapolis. Jim Barrett, Elmira, NY`` Wow. Thanks for the replies. I just turned on my Icom 756 transceiver at 1630 UT on Thursday, and I am hearing it loud. And that is 1230 pm EDT. I tried listening on my Cushcraft MA5B beam to see if there is any difference in signal level. It is mostly consistent with an S3 to S7 in most directions. At 300 degrees it was peaking from S4 to S9. I would suspect that under normal conditions propagation on 5 MHz would be about 500 to 700 miles from my location near Pittsburgh. As someone said, it is probably a goof on someone`s part. But who? 73 de Chuck W3ON`` (Glenn Hauser, OK, WORLD OF RADIO 2028) UNIDENTIFIED. 5000+, by April 3, the FSK/RTTY QRM on the high side of WWV, has gone away. Meanwhile, further discussion of it, first from the MARE Tipsheet: ``Jamie Tolbert: I wonder if that’s the new stock exchange type communications system that was on the 20m ham band last year; has to do with the Chicago stock exchange. They didn’t seem to care they were on 20m last year until someone told them about it.`` ``Charles Gessner: I have been hearing it most of today. I started at 1630 UT-it was strong at my home in W.Pa. I then tried again at 0030 UT. It is still very strong. As said before someone has done a TDOA direction finding study using online SDRs and determined that it was on an azimuth northwards towards Chicago from Indiana. It is continuous, that`s for sure. Oh well.`` And then on the WOR io group: ``Hmm. I just turned on my receiver here at 1425 UTC on Friday April 3rd, It appears that those FSK signals have disappeared. Strange how that happened. I will check Facebook to see if anyone on the Short Wave Listening group has any reports. I am hearing WWV on 5 MHz at a solid S5 signal, with nothing else heard. 73 de Chuck W3ON Gessner`` ``Whatever it was, it appears to be gone now at 1600 UTC on 3 April. Early this morning, the signal reverted to a standard 850 Hz FSK transmission, centered about 5.002 MHz, but I don’t hear it now in upstate NY, or on any of the Kiwi network receivers that were receiving it yesterday. Jim Barrett. Elmira NY`` ``Apparently now solved but here’s a theory - Some years ago when I was selling HF radios for commercial and government applications. We had a customer that programmed one of their preset channels to exactly 10 MHz for receiving WWV for frequency calibration purposes. One day there was a microprocessor glitch and the unit came up on on exactly 10 MHz and was key-down at 100W for several days. In those days the FCC was a lot more active and tracked it down to the embarrassed organization! Anyway, my theory is that something like that could have happened here, this time to WWV on 5 MHz.
