Consulting PWBR one has no clues on this one --- certainly not AIR Aizawl, India or TRAXX FM, Malaysia, the only two 7295 stations shown as on the air at this hour. Could not catch any ID, but this is Algeria`s Qur`an service 0400-0700 via Issoudun, France, 500 kW at 162 degrees, per Aoki, which began in December or January. They were frequently getting preëmpted by sports when they were on Sunday afternoons, and it looks like Saturday night is no improvement. Strong, but very much disturbed by R Taiwan International/Okeechobee 5950 (strong), R Pio Doce, Bolivia 5952.45 (very weak) and Voice of Turkey 5960 (strong), and totally spoiled at *2328 by Democratic Voice of Burma signing on from Wertachtal on 5955 33433 (Anker Petersen, Denmark, via Dario Monferini, playdx yg via DXLD) Wonder what the announcement said, as there usually aren`t any (gh) Re 8-034: Scott, most probably what you have heard on the mystery 5954 transmitter, was Colombian singer Shakira, from whom I've always have considered that overpassed Alanis Morrisette with her vocal imitation. Shakira, as well as Mexican group Maná, are everyday recipes in those test transmissions. BTW Terry, that ELCOR transmitter tests were running between 2300 to 2400, Monday to Friday at the beginning. For the last month or so, they have changed to 2230-2330 and in fact, they are now including Saturdays, as I heard them last March 8. So, here's your chance to check this weekend. 73 (Raúl Saavedra, Costa Rica, March 14, dxldyg via DX LISTENING DIGEST) 5954.115, unidentified ELCOR transmitter station, Guápiles; *2227- 2327* 16 March, 2008. Checking from 2205+, and finally this came up at 2227, into Spanish male vocal at 2228. The usual cycled nonstop music format until the last track play ended at 2326, then transmitter off at 2327. So, to answer my own question, this is a seven-day operation. Bet it's all on a timer. Also 2302-2310 14 March, 2008. Good signal but as usual, terribly crushed by adjacent channels. Spanish vocals. Frequencies that are reported to the .000 were arrogantly measured on the IC-R75 (vs. the NRD-535). (Terry L Krueger, Clearwater, Florida USA, 27.55.83 N, 82.46.08 W, DX LISTENING DIGEST) Mere speculation --- Could this be the ELCOR source, the TIRN 1140 entry? http://www.aciprensa.com/radio/costa.htm But if so they don't want to say (official site): http://www.gratisweb.com/DIOLIMON/radio_nueva.htm (Terry L Krueger, Clearwater, Florida, USA, DX LISTENING DIGEST) Doubt it. I believe it is Raúl who doubts any religious station could be behind 5954, due to the type of music played, FWIW (Glenn to Terry, via DXLD) Suck 'em in with Madonna and then WHAM, hit them with scripture one day. God works in mysterious ways (Terry Krueger, ibid.) ** COSTA RICA. Use to listen Russ Davies' Jazz America on VOA 9760 [Philippines] between 1300-1400 on weekends, most of the time arriving here with good signal. Since Sat. 15 March, I began to notice a slight het in USB. On Sunday it became more evident at 1400, so went up to measure REE vía Cariari on 9764. As the 7600GR lacks decimals so I zero beat the frequency with SSB. Has anybody else detected this? 73 (Raúl Saavedra, Costa Rica, dxldyg via DX LISTENING DIGEST) Hi Raul, I have a weak carrier, not enough for audio on 9764.28 kHz here in Finland. Maybe that? 73, (Mauno Ritola, Finland, ibid.) Buenos dias, Raul: On my R8B, it zero beats to 9764 exactly. There are some hets in there too that I'm going to try to decipher. 73 (John Figliozzi, Halfmoon, NY (about 160 mi. due north of New York City), ibid.) Buen día, John and Mauno. I was about to send this reply when a sudden power outage happened an hour ago. Mmm...why not that 9764 is the same REE Cariari unit operating one kc. down for their 0400-0800 on 5964, referred by Dan and Glenn on DXLD 8-032? 73 (Raúl Saavedra, Costa Rica, March 16, dxldyg via DX LISTENING DIGEST) Meanwhile: Several weeks after it first happened, REE via Cariari de Pococí remains exactly 1 kHz off frequency, 5964, obviously the case as it produces a big het against 5965 stations such as Cuba or Vatican. Now the infexion has spread to another Cariari relay frequency, 9765. Tuning across 31m, March 16 at 1313, heard a two-pitched het with VOA 9760 and some weak signal on 9765. Yes, REE on 9764! Checked their other CR frequency, 15170, but it was not on 15169, yet. In noting the HONDURAS carrier on 3340, Sunday March 16 at 0446, I found REE on 3350 or so; HFCC has this Tue-Sat only at 0200-0600, but other listings show it daily, so the latter are correct; anyhow, I should have measured 3350 to see if it is offset too; next time (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST) Next time: UT March 17 at 0542, yes on 3350.0 (Glenn Hauser, DX LISTENING DIGEST) 9764, Radio Exterior de España, Cariari de Pococí; 0022-0028 18 March, 2008. As reported by several others before me as being off-channel here. Spanish male discussion. Memo to engineer: if you bump this back to 9765, also fix the low modulation. Or better yet, close down this relay site (Terry L Krueger, Clearwater, Florida USA, 27.55.83 N, 82.46.08 W, March 17, DX LISTENING DIGEST) ** CROATIA [non]. The spurious mutation here, clear and fair with Spanish discussion. Intentionally modulated channels 6000 and 6180 in at local level (Terry L Krueger, Clearwater, Florida USA, 27.55.83 N, 82.46.08 W, March 17, DX LISTENING DIGEST) ** CUBA. DentroCuban Jamming Command, running at full force on 6100, March 16 at 0440. No trace of Radio República, which supposedly closes on this frequency at 0400, and I don`t think has ever been reported later than 0400, but hey, burn up some more megawatts just in case. The collateral victim of this is TWR Swaziland which opens at 0400 on 6100. BTW, Aoki says this RR frequency is Sackville, and with WRMI brokering, at 0200-0400 Tue-Sat. But as Jeff White has maintained repeatedly, these RR transmissions on 49m have nothing whatsoever to do with WRMI, just the ones on 9955; and surely the 6135/6155/6100 broadcasts are 7 days a week. R. Rebelde, 5025, with béisbol play by play, 0442 UT Sunday March 16. Rather late game, approaching local midnite, or is this normal in Cuba? Night games are no doubt more comfortable in the tropix, but burn up more lighting power (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST) ** CUBA. 1180, Rebelde FM and Radio Rebelde (multiple sites); 2109- 2115 16 March, 2008. Live play-by-play baseball coverage on Rebelde (parallel 5025), but equal level Rebelde FM with Cuban ballads and rock, female jock ID. Actually, two Rebelde FM transmitters, the weak one slightly delayed. There's always three or four Rebelde transmitters here, but only occasionally are they not being fed standard (non-Rebelde FM) audio (Terry L Krueger, Clearwater, Florida USA, 27.55.83 N, 82.46.08 W, DX LISTENING DIGEST) ** CUBA. Yet another complaint against the DentroCuban Jamming Command: March 17 at 0546, I found rapid clix like ``Geiger counter`` peaking at several places in the 10 MHz area, approx.: 10120, 10065, 10010, 9905, 9845, 9790. Note these are 50-60 kHz apart, centered around: 9955! Where there was heavy jamming against WRMI, but this jamming was the usual roar, not the Geiger counter; it also extended a little further away from 9955 than usual. Therefore, I think these are spurs from the jammers on 9955. BTW, there should have been no jamming on 9955 at this hour since the program scheduled is: Studio DX, the Italian DX program by Robert Scaglione! That`s UT Monday at 0530-0600; however, on UT Saturday and Sunday, Radio República is on 9955 at 0500-0700, per the grid at http://www.wrmi.net/images/wrmichart.xls (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST) ** CUBA. QSL on the air, sí amigos, QSL on the air to the many RHC listeners that have written to me asking for more information about Cuba's AM and FM radio broadcasting stations. So following the request, I will tell you today about one of the most widely heard AM stations from Central Cuba. It is the Santa Clara Radio Reloj station relay operating on 570 kilohertz running now a nice new 25 kilowatts solid state transmitter, after the old Tesla vacuum tube technology that served there for many years was finally taken off the air. Radio Reloj´s Santa Clara City relay station has a very nice 400 feet high antenna, with a very good ground system, and the reason that this low frequency channel was selected for Radio Reloj´s relay serving Villa Clara, Cienfuegos and Sancti Spíritus provinces was no other than the mountainous characteristics of most of the service area, where lower AM broadcast frequencies provide much better ground wave service than stations operating on the part of the band above 800 kilohertz or so (Arnie Coro, CO2KK, RHC DXers Unlimited March 11, HCDX March 14 via DXLD) QSL on the air, sí amigos, QSL on the air to the many RHC listeners that have written to me asking for more information about Cuba’s AM and FM radio broadcasting stations. So following the request, I will continue this new segment of Dxers Unlimited with more information about stations broadcasting from Central Cuba. In Santa Clara City on 840 kiloHertz CMHW, known to its listeners as LA DOBLEVE is now on the air with a new solid state high energy efficiency transmitter that is capable of 125 percent positive peak modulation. La DOBLEVE can be heard not only in Villaclara province, but also in neighboring Cienfuegos, Sancti Spíritus and Matanzas. And talking about Matanzas, the new frequency for the provincial station´s main transmitter is 1060 kiloHertz, again Radio Veintiséis, from the center of Matanzas province, with its new solid state transmitter on 1060 kiloHertz providing excellent coverage of the whole of Matanzas province, part of Cienfuegos and the southwestern area of La Habana province. The two new installations form part of a program now in progress to upgrade the AM medium wave band facilities by replacing the obsolete vacuum tube transmitters with new energy efficient equipment that is also capable of 125 percent positive peak modulation, something that increases the coverage of the stations as compared with what could be achieved with the old transmitters (Arnie Coro, CO2KK, RHC DXers Unlimited March 15, dxldyg via DXLD) It's good to see him reporting some MW details. I've actually had 1060 Radio 26 reported since early 2004 though, so while the transmitter is apparently new, the frequency has been active for awhile. Maybe just a translation issue (Terry L Krueger, Clearwater FL, DX LISTENING DIGEST) Such features about Cuba`s various MW stations were suggested here some months ago, when he dismissed them (Glenn Hauser, DXLD) ** CUBA [non]. 530, FLORIDA AIRSPACE, airborne Radio Martí [not]; again I made quick checks, this time on local Friday, March 14 and Saturday, March 15 at 2200 and 2300 GMT. Nothing except the usual strong Radio Enciclopedia [Cuba] and (later) Radio Visión Cristiana [Turks and Caicos]. (Terry L Krueger, Clearwater, Florida USA, 27.55.83 N, 82.46.08 W, DX LISTENING DIGEST) ** CYPRUS. 9760, Cyprus BC Corp, Limassol, *2215-2245*, March 16 sign on with Greek music. Greek opening announcements. Radio-drama. Greek folk music. Sign off with Greek music. Very good at sign on but slowly deteriorated to a weak signal by sign off. // 7210-mixing with a somewhat stronger China Radio International // 6180-weak under Brazil. Fri, Sat, Sun only (Brian Alexander, PA, DX LISTENING DIGEST) ** DOMINICAN REPUBLIC. 5009.78, 2335-2400* 12+13-03 R. Cristal Internacional, Sto. Domingo (very, very tentative) Spanish (??) fast and slow talks, music and songs 15221 (Anker Petersen, Denmark, via Dario Monferini, playdx yg via DXLD) And why not Madagascar? 5009.75, Radio Cristal Internacional/Radio Pueblo transmitter, Santo Domingo; 2314-2354 14 March, 2008. This is a tentative for certain, but it would seem to be the one so I'm sticking it here. Not sure when they were last active. Tune-in to songs by baritone Spanish vocalist with sparse instrumental accompaniment, seemingly canned male briefly at 2322, 2328, 2338, brief female vocal and into some kind of discussion by two guys with one "dominicana" reference. I left the room from 2354-2357, and upon return, this had signed off. Telco-ish audio. No Radio Madigasikara running overnight tonight, otherwise I doubt this would have made it. A check at 2340 on 15 March and 16 March at 2335 had nothing here. Time to check local weekdays next (Terry L Krueger, Clearwater, Florida USA, 27.55.83 N, 82.46.08 W, DX LISTENING DIGEST) See also MADAGASCAR, from March 16 back here (gh) 5009.77, Radio Cristal Internacional/Radio Pueblo transmitter, Santo Domingo; 2352-0000* 17 March, 2008. A follow-up to my initial 14 March log (and no trace of this on local Saturday and Sunday, between this log). By the time I got to the radio after doing other chores, this was indeed on again (local Monday). The same odd slow Spanish male vocals with sparse instrumental backup, not Christian though. Abruptly off mid-song at 0000. Signal pretty good, though modulation a little low. Anyone else hearing this (Atlantic seaboard, south Florida or Costa Rica should be trying for it)? RTE 567 closedown details --- As previously reported the RTE Tullamore medium wave transmitter on 567 will close on 24 March. The details of exact times are given below: This weekend will see sport on mediumwave and VHF output on longwave during opt-outs from the main service. From closedown on 567, longwave will then carry the sport opt-outs currently on mediumwave. RTE Europe on Sky will become the longwave service from then. On 24 March, RTE Radio 1 will be on 567 kHz until 1330. At this point, there will be a "countdown to the end" so they describe, with a final goodbye to medium wave, until 1500 hrs when the transmitter will be switched off (RTE via James Robinson, uk radio listeners, via Mike Barraclough, March 15, dxldyg via DXLD) Hi Glenn, I thought you might be interested in the following email I sent to RTÉ today, St Patricks Day, about their decision to to close down medium wave. On a day that the world celebrates its Irish connections (what other country has an international image brand like St Patricks Day?) RTÉ wants to cut more foreign listeners off! No doubt I will not get an answer! Kind regards, (Paul Guckian, Ennis, Co Clare, Ireland, March 17, DX LISTENING DIGEST) Viz.: Dear Sirs, As it seems that RTÉ is celebrating the closure of medium wave transmissions please check out the following blogs on the subject from Radio Netherlands : http://blogs.rnw.nl/medianetwork/rte-plans-to-switch-off-mediumwave-on-24-march I understand that the 252 LW transmitter was upgraded in 2004. Did this improvement also involve reducing the strength of the transmitter from 500 to 300 kW? And what is its strength at night, as anytime I have tuned to 252 at night in Britain the reception gets generally poor and I have often had to retune to 567. Also the figure that RTÉ states that only 1 in 10 RTÉ radio listeners listen on medium wave; does this include Radio 1 listeners in Northern Ireland and Great Britain? I strongly feel that this decision is a mistake at this point in time and is another example of RTÉ not caring for its overseas listeners just like a few years ago it suddenly withdrew its 30 minute news broadcast on short wave leaving many overseas Irish listeners in the dark. Three or four songs by the same artist this time (for awhile), with The Mamas & the Pappas followed by Roger Whittaker. Then, Scott Walker "I Get A Kick Out of You" into Frank & Nancy Sinatra "Something Stupid" (get it here? Frank covered "I Get A Kick Out of You" -- now that was shockingly clever as hell of Marblemouth, to throw Scott Walker into the headgame). Later, female covers of other rocker-penned songs (The Carpenters covering "This Masquerade" written by Leon Russell, and Melanie's cover of "Ruby Tuesday" penned by Mick Jagger & Keith Richard[s]). The latter may have been a difficult choice for Marblemouth: he could have used Marianne Faithfull's cover instead. A couple of Johnny Nash reggae songs, a Buddy Holly song, and Tommy Roe's "Dizzy" (OK, he finally lost me here on the theme or links; so he finally wins but I think I did pretty good). The radio signal was confirmed from North Korea, and consisted of music and human voices. There was no influence on aviation control of the day. RADIO NIGERIA IS NO POLITICAL PAWN -Ed, Frcn Kaduna Daily Trust (Abuja) INTERVIEW 17 March 2008 Posted to the web 17 March 2008 By Sani Babadoko Two weeks ago the Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria (FRCN) Kaduna added a new 10 kilowatts Frequency Modulated (FM) transmitter for its Hausa listeners. This is coming 46 years after the station's establishment by the then government of the defunct Northern region. It is also the forerunner to the planned replacement of its obsolete Short Wave (SW) and medium Wave (MW) transmitters. Despite the politically inspired controversy that trailed the location of some of its new FM stations in states controlled by opposition parties, the Executive Director FRCN Kaduna, Alhaji Ladan Salihu in this interview with our Kaduna Bureau Chief, Sani Babadoko, insists they are not political pawns. He says the replacement of the SW and MW transmitters will restore Radio Kaduna's lost glory. Excerpts: [Here limited to few grafs in long article mentioning shortwave -- gh] But the big picture really is not the FM. The big picture to me, and the management of FRCN Kaduna, is actually the Short Wave (SW) and the Medium Wave (MW) transmission platforms, which is what we are known for. The Hausa FM basically caters for Kaduna state and its environs, but the SW and MW transmission takes you to every nook and cranny of the country, and that is what we are emphasizing on to ensure that our people, wherever they are in the country, can tune to FRCN Kaduna. A Hausaman, for instance, living in Port Harcourt, Lagos, Enugu, Konduga, Ganborun-Ngala, Maiduguri or in Mambilla plateau for that matter, can be reached by Radio Nigeria Kaduna. We also provide information and entertainment to Nigerians whether they are from the East, West, North and South where they can know the happenings up North and hear news about their own kinsmen for the country's unity. Basically, the SW and the MW transmission platforms are the cherished arms of Radio Nigeria, Kaduna and that is what we are concentrating on. The Hausa FM as I said is a matter of variety. Indeed we are part of the technological development mainly because we are streaming Supreme FM, one of the stations on the FRCN bouquet, on the internet, but the Short Wave (SW) and the Medium Wave (MW) transmissions will also eventually be on the internet when our transmitters are replaced. Now beyond that I want to tell you that streaming on the Internet, as far as our core operations are concerned, is something we will do inevitably. But mark you, more than 70 percent of our audience do not have access to computers, and do not have access to Internet cafes. Our audience are mostly the everyday people living in towns, villages, hamlets dotted all over the country, and day in day out they tune to Radio Nigeria, Kaduna for news about events happening in the country and beyond. So we are, taking the ICT pari pasu with our own developmental objectives, and they have to go with our own dreams and aspirations as we try to reposition FRNC Kaduna. . . http://allafrica.com/stories/printable/200803171608.html (via Zacharias Liangas, DXLD) Kaduna is certainly active on 4770, heard here just about any night around 0600 as recently reported; and (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST) 4770, Radio Nigeria, Kaduna, 2240-2243, escuchada el 13 de marzo con emisión de música pop melódica con coros, el nivel de audio muy bajo, SINPO 35443 (José Miguel Romero, Burjasot (Valencia), Spain, Sangean ATS 909, Antena Radio Master A-108, YAESU FRG-7700, dxldyg via DX LISTENING DIGEST) ** NORTH AMERICA. 3430, US Pirate, The Crystal Ship, 0036 UT, 3-12, Strong but somewhat distorted signal. Radio Pakistan Bangla service was monitored in Lahore today. For initial two minutes the signal was weak but later on improved considerably. SINPO rating was 44343 which is unprecedented for API-3. Its peculiar buzz/howl was very low. Surprisingly no transmitter-studio link breakdown was noted, which is a hallmark of API-3. He adds that "Our normal transmission hours are from 1700(local time, that's 0700 GMT) to 2200 [a.k.a. 1200 UT], but because of the special election coverage transmission was extended for another two hours [to 1400 UT], and that was the segment of transmission that you listened to." Of further interest was the note that the station is now known as NBC Madang: "This is part of major changes that our organization, the National Broadcasting Corporation of Papua New Guinea is presently going through. Part of the changes would see the eventual phasing out of all SW transmitters by 2015 with all NBC stations (20 in all) transmitting through FM and AM." All this in 4 months for an English report, CD, and mint stamps (used, I think). Address: NBC Madang, P.O. Box 2138, MADANG 511, Papua New Guinea. Needless to say, I was extremely pleased with this QSL, although somewhat less pleased to hear the aforementioned news about the eventual end of shortwave (Mark Schiefelbein, MO, DX LISTENING DIGEST) Mark, Nice QSL! Like you, I was disappointed to read about their plans to phase out shortwave transmissions in favor of AM and FM. However, 2015 is a long way off and things do move slowly in Papua New Guinea. The minister who spoke about the trial of Radio Hargeysa’s new transmitter said. [Ilmi] [The transmitter is] today is on testing, which is being handled by the engineers. This is the new transmitter that was being awaited by Somaliland. As the minister of information, I do hereby congratulate you [listeners] that we have put the new transmitter on air. March 17, 2008 - U.S. international radio broadcasts to Tibet will increase by four hours daily beginning tonight at 6:00 p.m. EDT, 6:00 a.m. local time in Lhasa. [2200 UT] "The violent crackdown by Chinese authorities in Tibet compels us to increase our broadcasts," said James K. Glassman, Chairman of the BBG, which oversees all non-military U.S. international broadcasting including the Voice of America (VOA) and Radio Free Asia (RFA). "Our audience clearly will benefit from these trustworthy sources of news and information, which differ sharply from Chinese government sanctioned broadcasts." At present RFA broadcasts eight hours daily to Tibet via shortwave radio. VOA broadcasts four hours daily, also via shortwave. Each will expand radio programs by two additional hours daily. VOA also will double its weekly Tibetan-language television programming from one to two hours via the AsiaSat 3 satellite. "RFA's Tibetan service is working around the clock to bring authoritative, breaking news to the Tibetan people. These additional hours will greatly enhance our capacity to deliver this news, including live updates, to people on the ground," RFA President Libby Liu said. Tibet's media is tightly controlled and most Tibetans are deeply suspicious of Chinese domestic media coverage. BBG audience research, while limited to Tibetan refugees in Nepal, indicates that VOA and RFA are among the most well known foreign broadcasters and an important source of information in a society where word of mouth is the top way to share news. "We know from experience that Tibetans will tune to VOA at pivotal times such as these," said Danforth Austin, Director of the Voice of America. "For example, a VOA special TV program about the Dalai Lama receiving a gold medal from the U.S. Congress was recorded and widely distributed in Tibetan regions inside China." Shortwave changes for the Caribbean --- BBC World Service shortwave transmissions to the Caribbean will close on March 23rd 2008. Many listeners in the Caribbean and around the world no longer listen via shortwave. Instead they are choosing to listen to the radio on other platforms including FM, satellite and online. As a result, the BBC has invested in new FM services to the Caribbean. BBC World Service programmes can now be heard on FM 24 hours a day in Antigua, Trinidad and Jamaica as well as via partner stations in almost all of the Caribbean islands. In the Caribbean, a number of local radio stations broadcast BBC World Service on FM. These may be individual programmes as a supplement to their own schedules, or chunks of programming broadcast over several hours. To find stations in your area along with their BBC broadcast times, visit our schedules page BBC World Service can be heard 24 hours a day across Jamaica on 104 FM, in Antigua on 89.1 FM and in Trinidad & Tobago on 98.7 FM. In San José, Costa Rica, BBC World Service is on Radio Real Rock http://www.bbc.co.uk/cgi-bin/worldservice/psims/ScheduleSDT.cgi (via Mike Terry, dxldyg via DX LISTENING DIGESTS) [comments on above item originally interspersed:] Not exactly a shock... Well, this is true in a way. If you reduce availability of shortwave, as the BBC has done progressively, then undoubtedly you will have fewer shortwave listeners. If you're a listener and still want to hear the BBC, you are forced to find it by means other than shortwave. This in some circles is termed a "self fulfilling prophecy". Without question, things were trending this way to some extent before the BBC embarked on its current distribution strategy; but it is also true that the BBC's fuller than justified embrace of the trend has left more than a few former loyal listeners behind. The BBC's response to them is "get over it". This is, of course, at the pleasure of the partner stations hosting them. Admittedly, this situation is less likely to result in a loss of service in the Caribbean than elsewhere where it has been tried; but the risk remains. Furthermore, FM as a line-of-sight transmission medium trades higher quality audio for significantly restricted geographic coverage. To listeners unable to receive urban FM transmissions, the BBC's message presumably is also "get over it". "It may not amount to as comprehensive a service we once provided to you, but get over it". This does appear to amount to a much smaller and fragmented footprint than shortwave was able to provide. http://www.bbc.co.uk/cgi-bin/worldservice/psims/ScheduleSDT.cgi Good luck, dear listener (John Figliozzi, Halfmoon, NY, dxldyg via DX LISTENING DIGEST) Wonder now upon what kind of study or survey may have the Beeb relied on to tease up with listeners for a year. Was it they tried to give a final chance to SW listeners in the Caribbean, learning that a lot more, especially those who once claim, will be glad to have BBCWS available on SW in the American continent? Regarding this, what do you think we could expect from the recently resurgence of BBC Mundo for Latin America early morning? Sure, they'll soon excuse themselves by saying "Nadie más escucha a BBC Mundo en onda corta, por tanto finalizamos nuestro servicio matutino ------ bla, bla, bla. 73 (Raúl Saavedra, Costa Rica, dxldyg via DX LISTENING DIGEST) In fact I was surprised to discover this single hour of Spanish, 1100-1200 via Greenville on 6095 and via Montsinéry on 11825 or 13760, while looking up this story. And I made sure to check out the BBC website for a "shortwave changes" (what an Orwellian newspeak!) page concerning this transmission, but so far nothing at http://news.bbc.co.uk/hi/spanish/tuning_in/newsid_4294000/4294086.stm or the Spanish startpage. To put it in plain words: I can not imagine that this single hour of airtime at Greenville and Montsinéry, respectively, the only remaining usage of these sites (and shortwave transmitters in the western hemisphere altogether) by the BBC, will continue for much longer. If it survives the B07 season it still could go away in just a few weeks, considering the BBC's strange approach to cancel their shortwave transmissions incrementally. And re. Asia: In March 2005 the transmissions to Europe had been reduced to the morning and evening hours. Thus I think that this step in East and Southeast Asia signals the beginning of the end for BBC WS in English on shortwave for these regions. Another point: I really wonder if the Montsinéry site will still be on air for much longer. Has anybody already seen an A08 schedule, showing RFI or any other broadcaster still using it? And DW's A08 schedule looks suspiciously short to me, since I heard that they were already considering further shortwave cuts. Needs a detailed review and comparison, but unfortunately I have no time for this at present. Good night, (Kai Ludwig, Germany, March 18, dxldyg via DX LISTENING DIGEST) ** U K. But wait; there`s more, or rather, less --- SHORTWAVE CHANGES IN EAST AND SOUTH-EAST ASIA http://www.bbc.co.uk/worldservice/help/2008/03/080314_sw_asia_changes.shtml BBC World Service shortwave transmissions to East and South-East Asia will be reduced on 30th March 2008. Many listeners around the world no longer listen via shortwave and are choosing instead to listen to radio on other platforms including FM, satellite and online. To ensure the BBC can invest in these and other platforms it is necessary to reduce shortwave provision, while keeping our programmes available at the key listening times for radio - in the morning and the evening. Shortwave transmission will therefore cease between 10am and 5pm local time and midnight and 2 am local time. For details on BBC programme times where you are, please follow the link below: East Asia http://www.bbc.co.uk/worldservice/help/2007/12/071203_eastasia.shtml South-East Asia http://www.bbc.co.uk/worldservice/help/2007/12/071203_southeastasia.shtml (via Zacharias Liangas, Greece, March 17; Alokesh Gupta, India, March 18, dxldyg via DXLD) I looked at the SW schedules eventually displayed, and they are as usual UNDATED! I think they do not yet reflect the coming cuts. But there are so many different timezones, what the hell do they mean in UT by ``ceasing 10 am-5 pm and 12-2 am local``? (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST) The decision by the BBC World Service to reduce shortwave coverage in East and Southeast Asia raises concern -- basically, they're interested in being heard in major cities, while remote areas in this part of the world (that is, many that have no Internet access, or some that have it but have either bandwidth limits or have to pay fees for using it) must depend on shortwave. And in some five years, if the BBC decides that shortwave isn't needed in Asia anymore, then try to figure what will happen then? Obviously, BBC is interested in what means more to its audience -- in dollars and in what's now (locally on FM and online), not what's needed in other areas where it can't be reached -- where shortwave remains of necessity there (Joe Hanlon, NJ, DX LISTENING DIGEST) ** U K. Tried for the postponed WNTP 990 Philadelphia DX test UT March 15, using DX-398 in the yard. Fortunately it had stopped raining a few hours earlier and things had dried off somewhat. First try around 0420 UT yielded nothing, nor expected with day pattern toward SE. Listened intently from 0450 to 0500 during the ND 12.5 kW portion. XET was not much of a problem, close to a right angle, and no sign of CBW, which can boom in when K-indices are low. SWPC says: The mid-latitude K-index at 0300 UTC on 15 March was 2 (18 nT). But aimed toward Philadelphia, there was still a pile of QRM, multiple subaudible heterodynes from all the other stations, almost like a graveyard. However, at 0451 I could hear an occasional tone, but never copy any Morse code ID. At times the tones seemed evenly spaced like a timesignal. Sweeps definitely heard peaking around 0454-0456. So I count this only on the basis of assuming no other station would be transmitting such material. Right at 0500 on came the Cuban National Anthem, from the SE, presumably R. Guamá, Pinar del Rio, as mentioned by Arnie Coro in DXLD 8-031, if that is the only Cuban on the frequency, but not noticed prior to that. Imagine my surprise about a week ago when I tuned to 529 with my unaided GE Super Radio II, and found a fairly strong signal here in Huntsville, perhaps an S6, if I had a meter, almost as strong as the Nashville on 560. I don't know the exact distance to Manchester TN, but, it must be 60 or 70 miles. Can he possibly be running only 25 watts! Isn't that the limit. Really tears up 530, if you want to listen to anything there. 73, (Tim Hendel, Huntsville AL, March 14, DX LISTENING DIGEST) Dave takes pride in a superior grounding system for this transmitter beyond your ordinary NDB (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST) ** U S A. Tune-in to Ambrosia "How Much I Feel", Lynyrd Skynyrd "Sweet Home Alabama", The Troggs "Wild Thing", then, at 0148, male canned "Seventeen-hundred, KVNS, your favorite hits." More 60's/70's pop/rock, male canned "KVNS, Brownsville and the Río Grande Valley" ID at 0200 (nice touch, acknowledging the region). Good though trading places with presumed WJCC, Miami Springs (which apparently is back to running -- at least overnight -- a canned mix of 70's Classic Rock hits mostly alternating with Spanish salsa vocals when there's nothing to fill the time). WJCC's Classic Rock tracks mixing with KVNS made for a difficult take on logging details. KVNS programming sounded canned or voice-tracked, thought that not bad compared to most other AM/MW choices (much like listening to the transistor radio under the pillow in 1969). This was Spanish "la Preciosa" network format until late last year, if I recall correctly, Clear Channel also I think without looking up to confirm. Lots of other stations -- including a black gospel preacher -- in the mix on this channel (Terry L Krueger, Clearwater, Florida USA, 27.55.83 N, 82.46.08 W, DX LISTENING DIGEST) ** U S A. COURT WILL EXAMINE PROFANITY RULES By MARK SHERMAN, Associated Press Writer, Mar 17, 10:16 AM EDT WASHINGTON (AP) -- The Supreme Court on Monday stepped into a legal fight over the use of curse words on the airwaves, the high court's first major case on broadcast indecency in 30 years. The case concerns a Federal Communications Commission policy that allows for fines against broadcasters for so-called "fleeting expletives," one-time uses of the F-word or its close cousins. Fox Broadcasting Co., along with ABC, CBS and NBC, challenged the new policy after the commission said broadcasts of entertainment awards shows in 2002 and 2003 were indecent because of profanity uttered by Bono, Cher and Nicole Richie. A federal appeals court said the new policy was invalid and could violate the First Amendment. No fines were issued in the incidents, but the FCC could impose fines for future violations of the policy. The case before the court technically involves only two airings on Fox of the "Billboard Music Awards" in which celebrities' expletives were broadcast over the airwaves. NBC is separately challenging an FCC decision that rapped the network for airing Bono's use of the F-word during a Golden Globes awards show in 2003. The case will be argued in the fall. . . http://hosted.ap.org/dynamic/stories/S/SCOTUS_BROADCAST_INDECENCY?SITE=FLTAM&SECTION=HOME&TEMPLATE=DEFAULT (via Terry Krueger, DXLD) see also LANGUAGE LESSONS ** VENEZUELA. We will no longer be on 7125 kHz and will be changing to 12035 kHz. We're doing tests on that frequency at the moment and can heard during our second hour of broadcast [1800-1900 UT] on 12035kHz , as well as for the full two hours [1700-1900] on 7125 kHz . Start finding us on 12035 kHz now so that when we change over on 30th March you'll be able to remain up to date with news and all the election results. 4880 kHz will not be changing (via David Pringle- Wood, Harare, DXLD) 12035 NF, SW Radio Africa, 1800-1840, March 17, via U.K? But it seems what`s required of us, does not apply to Bob when he wants to steal an item from DXLD, with no credit, of course. Thanks to some people for forwarding copies of his latest EDXP Newsplus of March 17, containing this item, which begins: ``DRM WASTES ENERGY, LESS RELIABLE THAN AM OR SSB DRM continues to be a source of controversial opinions among the world's mass communications researchers, but there seems to be a consensus about the waste of resources that DRM is causing to the broadcast organizations, many of which are openly talking about severe budget limitations. . . (Edited transcript of a story by Arnie Coro, Radio amateur CO2KK, Radio Havana Cuba, Mar 8 2008)`` The trouble is: there was no such headline on Arnie`s story; that was made up by gh for publication only in DX LISTENING DIGEST. Ironically, it was hardly necessary to snatch it from DXLD without credit, as Arnie`s scripts appear in several places other than DXLD; but only in DXLD are they given headlines when needed, and edited in such a way to remove all the annoying dot-dot-dots, etc., and replace them with real punxuation. See the notice at the top of http://worldofradio.com/dxldmid.html Are we going to demand that BP remove this and apologize? No, but he owes us (at least) one, in case we ever find anything worth quoting from him. And this gives us a golden opportunity to show just how duplicitous this ``professional`` is. And he wonders why EDXP membership keeps falling; single digits yet? If you know someone who is still an EDXP member, you might forward this to them (Glenn Hauser, DX LISTENING DIGEST) LANGUAGE LESSONS ++++++++++++++++ BASTARD, another word you can`t say on PBS I happened to be watching an old tape of some PBS show (via OETA) about war, including the famous clip from the movie of George C. He won it by making the other poor dumb bastard die for his country.`` [is the quote I easily Googled] Yes, ``bastard`` was bleeped, twice, and furthermore, for the lip- readers among us, his lips were pixillated. Since when has bastard been an offensive word of such a high order that it is banned from PBS/OETA? Radio Ethiopia, http://www.erta.gov.et/ has numerous links for online video - English news videos date from 27 December 2007, while those in Amharic are from April 2000 (!). The latest radio news is dated 02-13-1999 (using dd/mm/yyyy format!) - perhaps a more generous calendar is in use? " Sorry, I'm a little late reacting to this --- however Ethiopia officially uses the Julian calendar which is about seven years and eight months behind the Gregorian calendar used by the rest of the Christian world. In Ethiopia itself, Amharic signs, etc., use the Julian calendar, whilst English signs use the Gregorian -- so the online videos on their website are more up to date than would first appear, although the latest English news videos today still date from 27 December 2007, and the radio news bulletins are out of date by any calendar! The formula 1/R - "at twice the distance you get 1/2 the signal" is incorrect. the relationship is logarithmic, not arithmetic. The groundwave signal reduces in inverse proportion to the square of the distance. So, at twice the distance you get a quarter of the signal, not a half. 2. The laws of physics are universal, so "in N. America it's considered to be greater [skywave] signal the higher the frequency, in the rest of the world the data is considered to be the opposite of that" seems odd. In Europe we are very familiar with daytime skywave reception on mediumwave in the winter and it is definitely more prevalent in the higher part of the band. Also, mid-day skywave on longwave is never observed - confirming the same point. Finally, well-known German MW DXer Martin Elbe has cast doubt on my 2001 logging of 945 Angola from Accra. He says it was probably São Tomé that I heard. Fair point, especially as both would be in Portuguese. My memory is unclear. I thought I had confirmed 945 as Angola by checking against the parallel SW frequency, but I can't remember for certain now. Unless I can produce documentary evidence in my archives (a log note showing a confirmed ID or parallel broadcast, or a recording), I will have to withdraw my claim. Accra to São Tomé is only 600 miles, so no sweat for a groundwave signal over an all- water path. One factor to check is which side of the island the Sao Tome transmitter is on. If not the side facing Accra, then Angola might still be the more likely station I heard (Chris Greenway, England, March 15, DX LISTENING DIGEST) Here is today's show first item --- Another week of very little solar activity reported by scientists, who continue to wait for the expected increase in the number of sunspots from the new cycle.
