According to the one Mailbox Program in English when PRA had Foreign Service, but surely it was in previous summer 2006, they said that the 234 kHz frequency would be replaced by 1314 kHz due to the damage of the antenna. Looking in my 2005-2006- 2007 logs, I found my tests on LW without results for ARM on 234, but I never did catch them on 234 or 1314 kHz. So, for the last time (but for me) 234 kHz was on the air when they had news in English, French, German at 1830-1900 Winter UT. They said the transmitter (I think it was #3; #1 was 1395, #2 was 864 / 1350 kHz) is with 500 kW or 600, I forgot. Seems the transmitter has to be #4 used on 1377 kHz for TWR and VOR relays. Conoscevamo anche il tecnico Sr. Dalva Silva Email : dalvals @ terra.com.br se avete rapporti di ascolto di R. COMMUNITY RADIO CATCHES P.G.'S EAR (News) Friday, 24 August 2007, 23:00 PST [sic] by JAMIE WOODFORD Citizen staff The city's newest community radio station is doing much better than first predicted, according to its operations manager Reg Feyer. "We've gotten an excellent response. In fact, way better response than I anticipated," he said. The first official broadcast was July 3, and feedback of CFIS 93.1 FM listeners as been very encouraging. "It was just phenomenal the positive response we got from people," said Feyer. "A lot of people are very, very happy to have us on the air." Feyer said he doesn't expect CFIS to beat other local radio stations, he just wants it to reach an audience being left out of the sound waves of the city. "One of our thoughts when we put this together was not to try and compete with anyone, but do what the other stations aren't doing," he said. The idea for the station began when Feyer realized other stations weren't catering to the older crowds. "Every time they changed formats it was geared towards a younger demographic than what they were previously targeting," he said. "So I thought there must be a market there to put something out for an older demographic." Two years later 93.1 was born. "We went the other way with a softer sound that wasn't being carried," said Feyer. CFIS airs predominantly pre '80s pop music, but also features live Spruce Kings' play-by-play broadcasts and other specialty shows, including a German language program, an Australian program with popular music from down under, assorted informational pieces on things like money and travel, editorial and historical shows with a local author, country music and the blues. Feyer said he hopes the experience broadcasting the Spruce Kings games will help the station eventually broadcast other minor sporting events. The station has only volunteer hosts for now. Feyer said a lot of the voices are people who are trying it out to see if it's something they want to pursue. "We're hoping to get more and more individuals ... who are thinking of maybe a career path in journalism or broadcasting to have this available for them." CFIS is currently gearing up to apply for a full licence as they are currently operating under a developmental licence, which limits them to five watts of power. The station is also in the process of getting funding to build full studios to incorporate the talk show and talk format programs, which are currently pre-recorded and quite restricted, said Feyer (Prince George [BC] Citizen, via Sheldon Harvey, DXLD) ** CANADA. FRENCH TO REFORM INTERNATIONAL BROADCASTING Le Figaro reports that, under the auspices of the Elysee, the French government intends to settle the tricky issue of foreign radio and television broadcasting by the end of the year. 300 million euros are spent each year to finance the various uncoordinated entities which make it up. One year after the launch of the international news channel France 24, says the newspaper, the need to reconfigure this loose conglomeration has never been so great, both in terms of strategy and costs. At this stage the formation of a holding company overseeing TV5, France 24, and Radio France Internationale (RFI) is said to hold the state’s attention. This would give the state some time to study the case of RFI, which is to be modernized. While the presence in Africa and the Middle East remains strategic, its broadcasting in Europe deserves to be rethought by favouring associations with local radio stations and the use of the Internet, says Le Figaro. Oldiestar Radio issued today a press release about their DRM tests via Burg-1575: The development shows a "positive tendency", important experiences were already made, objective of these test transmissions is to gain experiences under real-world conditions also with vertical incidence antennas at night, they are getting letters from all parts of Germany and many European countries, but there is no reason for too much joy; it will take years until DRM will be established, they consider themselves as pioneers. The priority is still an FM distribution; it is still the only way to refinance a station, thus as next step is planned to obtain an FM frequency with good reach at Berlin. http://www.presseportal.de/pm/60682/1038488/medienbote At present the 1575 tests also involve the so-called mode D, per definition especially robust, thus also delivering only a mere 11 kbps audio bitrate (the same one than the infamous analogue/digital simulcast mode tested via Zehlendorf-693). Surprisingly it turned out that on 1575 this mode works much poorer than the higher bitrate modes. The mention of FM in Berlin refers to the current allocation round, also involving the frequencies used by BBC WS and RFI. Five stations currently broadcasting via DVB-T applied for FM allocations, too. Also some applications for entirely new projects were filed, including a proposal by NRJ's Berlin branch to establish a light music station, a German Nostalgie, so to speak. Complete list of applications: http://www.mabb.de/start.cfm?content=Presse&template=pressemeldungsanzeige&id=1356 Meanwhile a strange observation had been made at Delitzsch, 20 km north of Leipzig, on Saturday (Aug 25): Around 1200 a DRM signal could be detected on 819, with label "RTL", but it was too week to get out anything more. About one hour later the signal could be detected also at Halle/Saale, a vague DFing appeared to point at Berlin. No further observations of this signal could be made afterwards. http://forum.mysnip.de/read.php?8773,451822,521020#msg-521020 The posting suggests that this could be related to the upcoming IFA. However, 819 was never in use in Germany; a Berlin transmitter should rather be on 810. Indeed during IFA 2001 the Stallupöner Allee site was on air in DRM mode on this frequency (with Radio Eins as programming if I recall correctly), but for well-known reasons (it simply no longer exists), this station can be definitely ruled out as origin of any signals now. One could also assume a typo; in the past 891 was on air in the Berlin area as well (until 1990 with 5 kW from the Köpenick site, then a 1 kW transmitter at Zossen relayed until 1994 Radio Rossii for the Russian forces headquarters at Wünsdorf), but sure enough 819 has been explicitly mentioned twice (Kai Ludwig, Germany, Aug 28, dxldyg via DX LISTENING DIGEST) ** GREECE. WHERE TV IS GOOD FOR YOU By Joel Waldfogel, Sunday, August 26, 2007; B02, Washington Post With perhaps the exception of Homer Simpson, Americans tend to denounce television even as they devour it. Watching TV is implicated in the disengagement of citizens from politics, the promotion of questionable images of women and the fattening of couch potatoes everywhere. But when it comes to the medium's treatment of women, television may be getting a bum rap. A new study by Robert Jensen of Brown University and Emily Oster of the University of Chicago shows that television is having a distinctly helpful effect on women, at least in rural India. The words female empowerment and television in the same sentence may bring to mind Star Jones extolling tummy tucks on "The View." But for millions of women in developing countries, the benefits of TV may be substantive rather than frothy. Attitudes about women in rural India remain, shall we say, traditional: Women are expected to cook and clean and to have lots of babies. Surveys from 2001 to 2003 show that women in rural India don't have a lot of control over their lives. More than half need permission from their husbands to go shopping. Two-thirds need their husbands' permission to visit friends. Spousal beating is common and accepted: Sixty-two percent of women believe that it is sometimes acceptable. One-fifth of women believe that husbands are entitled to hit them for cooking a lousy dinner. . . http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2007/08/24/AR2007082401222_pf.html (via Mike Cooper, DXLD) ** INDONESIA. 9680, RRI Jakarta. The first picture on the second page is labelled "German antenna", apparently a mast dismantled somewhere in Germany in 1945. There were two 150 kW mediumwave transmitters, a Shtorm-S of which until late 2006 or early 2007 one half carried Mayak on 549 (moved to here from 1998 to replace the previous 500 kW from the Kurovskaya station, apparently considered as too expensive) and a DSV-150 (RV- 221) of which until May 2005 one half has been used for Radio Orfey (now on FM only) on 1152. This DSV-150 transmitter has already been taken apart; one half went to Balashikha, the other to Elektrostal (not necessarily for being kept there). The shortwave side consisted of four Sneg transmitters, upgraded to 100 kW, in transmitter room 3. They were equipped with separate transformer chambers, and one of them actually fed a residential building. Shortwave operations ceased in 1999; last remaining service was a single frequency for Radio Rossii, aiming at Belarus (during daytime 9720, mornings/evenings somewhere on 49 metres). Radio Caroline denied licence to test DRM Rob Leighton of Radio Caroline writes: Back in May this year we started talking to Graham Warren, Head of Broadcast Technical Policy at Ofcom, with the intention of applying for a 12 month test & development licence to relay Caroline’s Satellite Service from the UK, using 1 kW on either 41m or 49m shortwave. We proposed carrying out research into the ruggedness of DRM reception when the signal was subjected to conditions of severe selective fading as found in and around the edge of a shortwave transmitter’s skip zone. We proposed using a 50/50 mix of DRM and AM, so that listeners with traditional AM shortwave receivers could listen to our AM programmes and be informed of what was happening when we switched to DRM mode, and how they could contribute data if they wished to be involved with the research findings. By proposing these tests we envisaged introducing Caroline to a substantial new audience of European shortwave listeners, whilst at the same time promoting the use of a new, efficient, high quality digital modulation technique and contributing to DRM’s global pool of knowledge. Listeners to our AM transmissions using traditional receivers would be fully aware of what we were doing at the AM/DRM switch-over, would be told how and when to decode our DRM signals, and from where to obtain the necessary software and equipment. We received a reply from Ofcom earlier this month, in which Mr Warren informed us that the particular aspect of research we had proposed had already been investigated, and that our licence request was therefore unsuccessful. Naturally we are disappointed, as the granting of the licence we requested should have resulted in a win-win situation for everyone. But it’s understandable that Ofcom have little desire to grant a test & development licence to repeat aspects of research that have already been completed. We still have other confidential irons in the fire - Caroline has never liked the word ‘no’! VPR DOUBLES UP IN BURLINGTON MARKET It's been literally years in the making, but VERMONT Public Radio is finally about to throw the switch on an expansion that will bring its second service, an all-classical network, to the state's largest market. On Friday, August 31, VPR will take control of what's now WAVX (90.9 Schuyler Falls NY), replacing that station's Christian rock format with classical and changing the calls to WOXR. "The calls signs don't have any particular importance, other than an homage to the great New York classical station, WQXR," says VPR president Mark Vogelzang. (He jokes that they could also stand for "Only eXcellent Radio.") The station is expected to sign off as WAVX on Wednesday, when VPR closes on its purchase of the station from Christian Ministries, Inc. It will return Friday at - when else? - 9:09 in the morning. When it does, it will help to fill out the VPR Classical network that signed on in 2004 at WNCH (88.1 Norwich), serving the Connecticut River Valley. The network grew in a small way with translators, then added a second full-power signal, WJAN (95.1 Sunderland, now WVTQ), earlier this year - but until now, it's been heard in Burlington and vicinity only via web streaming and the HD2 channel of VPR's main network. The 90.9 signal that's being added to the network will reach some 175,000 new listeners, not only in greater Burlington but also across the lake in the Plattsburgh, NY area, where the transmitter is located. (It's a 2.7 kW/1073' class C2 signal, coming from the WPTZ-TV tower on Terry Mountain.) As for the "Wave" programming, Christian Ministries will continue it - on HD. It's using some of the proceeds of the WAVX sale to upgrade its flagship station, WGLY (91.5 Bolton), and will put the Wave on WGLY's HD2 signal. (And full disclosure, since now it can be told - your editor has served, with no small amount of pride, as a consultant to VPR on this project.) (Scott Fybush, NE Radio Watch Aug 27 & Sept 3 via DXLD) ** U S A. To reiterate something Harry Helms said.... "It's an indictment of AM-FM radio that people will pay 13 dollars a month not to listen to it." RADIO MAY SURVIVE THIS, TOO === BROADCASTERS HOPE MP3S AND SATELLITE RADIO WON'T KILL TERRESTRIAL MARKET With all these new gadgets for listening to music -- from MP3s to state-of-the-art cell phones and laptops, not to mention satellite radio -- it's a wonder anyone is listening to good old-fashioned terrestrial radio. One theory says that so many listeners are spending money on newfangled technology that the ones left tuning in to terrestrial radio are doing so only because they can't afford the new toys. "Because of satellite radio, more affluent people are going to use that service, so we have a smaller piece of the pie to slice up with the people remaining, who are not so affluent," said Bob Pettit, general manager of WCBM, the Baltimore talk-radio station at 680 AM. "The younger people are going to the new technologies. Radio used to be a very effective way to reach people aged 18 to 34. Now, not so much." As a result, Pettit said, national advertisers are not turning to the old medium the way they once did, leaving the field to cheaper, and often local, ad buyers. In turn, the stations are obliged to charge less money because their demographic is poorer, he said, leaving the stations with less revenue. . . http://www.baltimoresun.com/entertainment/bal-al.eye26aug26,0,7435523.story (via Kevin Redding, ABDX via DXLD) There is a LOT of truth to that article. In the Miami - Fort Lauderdale market there is this one radio station that is "Live N Local" 24/7. They are out doing all sorts of promotions and remotes. They do more Public Service then the rest of the stations in that market combined and have earned all sorts of rewards from different agencies and music groups. This one station is doing what ALL radio stations should be doing, and making a huge profit doing it! If you are in that market, I bet you know what station I am talking about. SOUTH CAROLINA RADIO NOTES Me and Pedantic Powell Way headed over to Wild Wings in Columbia at The Village at Sandhill for a meetup with some fellow radio geeks... "DudeFan", "CrazzeeCarroll", Powell and I were there. On the way there, I got to sample some of the radio stations between Abbeville and Columbia. It was quite interesting in some respects. 94.1 in Greenwood (licensed to Cross Hill) changed call letters to WYOR. They're calling themselves "Your Radio 94" and running some pretty decent jingles too. The station is being LMA'd by Jeff Ropper a.k.a. Big Fish Broadcasting pending a purchase, I think. WYOR-FM is an exact copy of WJES 1190, which runs basically the same format but has some beach music that 94.1 doesn't have. 94.1`s co-owned 1450 is still running ABC's Timeless Favorites satellite format, with no local elements. NO LOCAL commercials, no local liners, and last I checked. No legal id. (I heard one "1450 WCRS" liner by a man in a deep voice followed by 2 minutes of silence before joining the network again) 97.7, WHZK-LP, licensed to the South Carolina Mass Choir, Inc has incredibly tinny and flat audio. Although their FCC Application pledges to serve "the underserved African American community in Greenwood", they're programming the station as "La Caliente 97.7" full time. (Apparently, while WHZK-LP 97.7 is licensed to South Carolina Mass Choir, Inc., WZKQ-FM 105.3 Hodges, SC is licensed to Hodges In Woman Broadcasting Club. It, ironically, has the same contact person and same email address) 102.3, WXOR-LP, also licensed to Greenwood owned by "Radio Good Hope" runs programming from The LifeTalk Radio Network http://www.lifetalk.net in Collegedale, TN. Their audio was very good, and very deep, very rich, I noticed when playing music. 10x better then 97.7 WHZK-LP! 1350, WLMA, also licensed to Greenwood and owned by "Morradio, Inc" runs a NewsTalk type format, but was running gospel this afternoon. The audio was flat, tinny and muddy. There's a reason the station shows up as "DWLMA" but is still on the air. I won't even touch that one, as I don't know the full story and I'm a broadcaster in the community here so I better not bad mouth someone. [D = deleted] 98.9, WSPA licensed to Spartanburg (a 100,000 Watt ERP Signal) and owned by Entercom was dead air for at least 10 minutes before. Right at the Top Of The Hour, I heard, "It's all Request Saturday Night on Magic 98.9, WSPA Spartanburg/Greenville".... so, this begs the following question: 1.) If it was all request, why did the person there not play CD's if the computer crashed? 2.) How can it be all request, when presumably, because there was dead air because no one was there, it was probably voicetracked? 3.) Why did someone at co owned WFBC-FM or WORD NewsRadio not catch this? 1520, WKMG is owned by Cornell Blakely, having bought it in 1998. According to http://www.wkmgam1520.com ! Well, this has got to be the worst sounding piece of trash on the dial! It sounded as if they were running cassette tapes that were 20 years old on a tape deck with worn out heads submurged in 6 feet of water. The audio was BEYOND muddy. (I emailed them and asked, "Did there just happen to be something wrong when I tuned in?") I like how their website claims they operate from 5 am to 7 pm every day? They are 1000 Watts, Non Directional day only. If they had Pre Sunrise Authority, it would start at 6 am, not 5am. Also, in the winter, they'd be on over 2 hours past when they're licensed for. [later, Powell E. Way adds: That is the nice version. I don't know what the deal is. Even though I work at WKDK, I may run over there with a LARGE bottle of alcohol and Q tips and see if dirty heads are the problem. If they are worn past the gap I guess there is no hope, unless it's reel to reel. There still are some parts for those. Some of the audio CAN sound OK, but what we heard was 100% and totally unlistenable. I could not understand one word that was said. And yes, I know Cornell. I may have to see what the problem is. They don't even SHOW in the ratings usually. I don't understand how he keeps the station on the air, really. I have heard hundreds of stations and this classifies as the worst I have ever heard. Powell] 99.3, WXRY-LP licensed to Columbia and owned by Gamecock Broadcasters runs a AAA type format, which you can find at http://www.wxryfm.org ! They stream online in near CD Quality and they have some cool stickers, t-shirts and other items in their cafepress.com store! I have to wonder if they even have an engineer? The 1180 station doesn't allow any visitors. It is run like a military base or prison. Besides the locked gate, there is a security camera & a guy that will come out to the gate if anyone approaches & act mad until they're back on the highway. He wouldn't speak a word to us. (Steve Ratzlaff, NE Oregon, 0435 UT Aug 26, ibid.) From the "it's a small world" department: The brother of the CE that I work for now was the CE who built the Marathon FL facility. He said that the working title during the construction phase was Radio Free Cuba. After the completion of the project he was promoted to a position in DC which he hated. He said the only place he could afford to live was 50 miles out of DC and he had to commute in daily by train. He eventually got transferred back to Marathon. But they had budget problems a decade or so ago and gave him the choice of accepting a lower rated position or retiring at his then current position. He did the math and found out that he would make more retiring at the higher position than he would make if he continued working at the lower position! So he's long retired from them now and lives in the Waco TX area where he is the radio engineer for the water department that serves the Bush ranch! Unfortunately he no longer has any contacts within Radio Martí. By the way, the studios for Radio Martí were in DC from 1985 until about 1996 when they moved to the Miami area. Didn't I just read that there is a CP on 1180 somewhere in the northern part of FL? I would think that they would be quite unhappy if Martí was to go ND with 100 kW (Patrick Griffith, CBT CBNT CRO, Westminster CO, ibid.) The CP is for 5 kW Day with 4 towers and 1.6 kW night with 6 towers licensed to Gainesville, owned by RAMSIII a.k.a. Reynolds Technical. (Paul Walker, SC, ibid.) Where did you hear that they were granted a CP? The FCC database shows that as an application - not a CP. They also show a competing application for 1180 in Pace FL. And apparently a CP was granted for 1180 in Havana FL way back in 1996. But the CP was returned in 1997. Then it was repetitioned but was placed on hold due to the AM freeze (Patrick Griffith, CBT CBNT CRO, Westminster CO, ibid.) I believe the 1180 APP in Gainesville was granted as a single in a recent list I saw, so it'll eventually be given the CP.. not Pace, Florida (Pace is east of Pensacola, across the bay near Milton I believe) (Paul Walker, FL, ibid.) Please advise who the fellow was that saw the light and got out of Dodge City (WASHDC) and moved to Marathon. Sounds like the period when Martí was still a subagency of VOA and had to put up with VOA's budget. Later, Martí became equal with VOA and got separate funding from VOA. This funding was enhanced by the political clout of the (mostly Republican) Cuban-American community in Miami/Dade. Martí moved studios down to Hialeah so it could be better controlled by forsaid community). As far as I can see, except for unusual circumstance, Martí-1180 would not go to ND because of WHAM-1180. Just my thoughts. Charles/Gato (Charles A Taylor, WD4INP, Greenville, North Carolina, IRCA via DXLD) Re: ``The map is obviously plotting Jay's null and not signal bearing, which looks like it will be pretty close to the other Eastern Cuba plots. Assuming "the map" means the Jim Tonne map, should that probable direction be changed 90 degrees, to point down to Cuba?`` Guys, when you send me your "null" or whatever info, *please* indicate where you are. I write down the latitude and longitude of the listener's location for my records (all on one piece of paper so far) along with the evident *direction of the station*. I don't care how you get that direction. And if you just say the name of your town I either ignore it or have to look it up on Google, using townname and latitude/latitude. - (Jim Tonne, back from a short business trip, ABDX via DXLD) NO! Whether it fits into preconceived notions of where this signal is emanating from or not, my bearing to the signal has remained pretty much the same. I originally reported 75/255. I've since refined that to 73/253. Correcting for magnetic declination gives 68/248 relative to true north. My location is 28 23'27.48"N - 81 25'44.85"W (Jay Heyl, Orlando FL, ibid.) It looks like my receiver is off about 23 Hz low tonight (USB). This appears to be in the BFO and likely is as close as I am going to get. It's off high in LSB the same amount. So add about 23 Hz to the audio frequencies mentioned below, as I used USB mode, to get closer to the actual RF frequency. The sound card looks to be better than 1 Hz accuracy as per the WWV tones, as calibrated in AM mode. I am making a run with Spectrum Lab tonight and should have long-term screen shots available. A carrier at 1955 Hz faded up at 1855 EDT. There was a carrier about 2 Hz below this that was varying in frequency quite a bit. It is a lot weaker than the 1955 Hz carrier. This one faded up at about 1915 EDT. The carrier at 1977 faded up at 1915 EDT. This is likely the 1181 carrier most are seeing and reporting. It's the strongest carrier I am seeing in this frequency area. There also seem to be some other extremely weak carriers fading up, but almost invisible. Alan, is the one carrier the only thing you are seeing out your way? (Rick Kunath, MI?, ibid.) Rick, At the moment I only see the one signal. Last night 10 PM or so [0300 UT Aug 25] there were several other weak signals visible. I admit that I paid little attention to them. Time permitting I will have a look later this evening. One thing I didn't think to do last night was to observe if the weak signals changed during the 90 second 1181 off periods (Alan Schreier, Austin TX, Aug 26, ibid.) Hi Jay, you are totally correct. I already know that something that I would get tired of very fast indeed, is trying to defend my incompetence; so I won't even try ;) Somehow, even amid my confusion regarding your excellent method of taking bearings with Quantum that I plan to emulate here as soon as I can print out a large compass rose this week, the measurements I reported from the 1181 mystery signal from here in Memphis are accurate, thank goodness. I double checked myself last night ;) My apologies for the confusion. Humble 73s, (Brandon Jordan, Memphis, TN, bcdx.org ibid.) Don't forget, it's a hobby. It's supposed to be fun (Jerry Lenamon, TX, ibid.) Hi Terry, With Jay Heyl in Orlando insisting now that 1181 bears 68/248 from him, it would be very helpful if you could obtain a bearing with some precision from Clearwater. Could it possibly be from somewhere in your area? If you could get a bearing toward Cuba, it could still cross his 248 line from Orlando somewhere in [west] Florida. Tnx, (Glenn Hauser to Terry Krueger, via DXLD) I recalled Z had bearings, but forgot what so I got hooked up the Scotka active ferrite bars antenna to the NRD-535. I get 1181.00 to peak at 150-degrees. Now I just found Z's email in the trash bin, and he had it at 153, Santa Clara vicinity. Some other DX bulletins deliberately obscure, delete, or generalize program log details to discourage this. However, our objective is to publish interesting and useful info for the historical record without regard to possible fraudulent use! It's starting to look that way, thanks to Bob Savage, founder and owner of WYSL (1040 Avon). The famously independent broadcaster (and longtime friend of this column and its editor) has been stirring up a hornet's nest with his "call to action" for fellow small AM stations facing what he says will be ruinous interference from nighttime HD broadcasts on the AM dial. In Savage's case, his 500-watt night signal, which does a surprisingly good job of reaching Rochester, 20 miles to the north, will likely be all but extinguished (possibly even within its own city of license, Savage says) on many nights by the digital sidebands from WBZ (1030 Boston). Savage says he's received support for his campaign from several big guns in the industry, including WSM (650 Nashville) chief engineer Watt Hairston, and he's asking other stations in similar situations to his to contact Congress and the NAB to call for action to save their signals from interference. "Any gain from implementation of HD-AM, no matter how slight, will come at the expense of massive trauma to small and medium market AM operators," says Savage. He says he stands to lose a significant amount of sports revenue - and potentially a good chunk of his retirement, too, having staked it on the success of WYSL - if the station can't be heard at night. Could WYSL end up being one of the test cases for the interference disputes that are bound to arise come mid-September, when nighttime HD on AM is legalized? Using the NRD535D for the above logging [MALAYSIA], the quality of the signal was fair compared to threshold to nil with the WR G305e/pd. If I had to describe the WR G305e/pd with only one word, I'd call it the "Tease". You can easily see the signal trace of any station on the Spectrum Analyzer, but forget about hearing anything from a weak station. The Audio just isn't there. Should I expect more from the G305? UHF is by definition 300-3000 MHz. Two websites are shown on the QSL card, and hunting around in them, I eventually found this with more about the occasion: http://www.radioamatorionline.org/modules.php?name=Kalender&op=view&eid=145 But WTFK???? They go into details about the equipment and the power, but never the frequency!! It is also referred to as ``microwave``, which only applies to the upper part of the UHF range. How in the world can such a momentous event be reported upon without mentioning the actual frequency?? Was this line-of-sight, or was there oceanic tropo ducting or enhancement?? (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST) LEE DE FOREST - "FATHER OF RADIO" August 26, 1873 --- Lee De Forest, American radio and television pioneer and inventor of the Audion vacuum tube, which made broadcasting possible, is born. CNA http://www.taiwanheadlines.gov.tw/ct.asp?xItem=85721&CtNode=39 Lee de Forest was one of the first to broadcast voice and music to an audience. He was a fan of the opera, and he claimed in his writings that he before anyone else believed that the radiotelephone would be an excellent way to send musical entertainment into homes. In 1907 he formed the De Forest Radio Telephone Company. Newspaper stories show that in 1910 he used his radiotelephone to send the voices of opera singers to members of the press stationed at receiving sets. And when testing the radiotelephone for the Navy, he played patriotic phonograph music as the ships entered the harbor. In a de Forest company advertisement issued in 1907, he wrote: "It will soon be possible to distribute grand opera music from transmitters placed on the stage of the Metropolitan Opera House by a Radio Telephone station on the roof to almost any dwelling in Greater New York and vicinity. . . The same applies to large cities. Church music, lectures, etc., can be spread abroad by the Radio Telephone." Many have believed that the early de Forest radiotelephone transmitters were based on his famous audion tube. This is not true. Until 1916 De Forest, like Charles Herrold and practically every early broadcaster of voice and music used some version of the Poulsen DC arc for voice transmission. Later, de Forest was asked to talk about his early Oscillion transmitters. As detailed in the accompanying story (see website), he was the first to broadcast election returns to an audience. While many believe that KDKA in 1920 was the first, it was from High Bridge New York in 1916 that de Forest broadcast for a rather large audience the Hughes-Wilson Election returns from the newsroom of the New York American. He used a tube to transmit for the first time, his final use of the Audion in radio broadcasting. In 1920, de Forest set up a radio station in San Francisco, again using another version of this transmitter.(See the photos and read the story). In his final years de Forest was disillusioned at what radio programming had become. Believing himself to be the "Father of Radio" he asked reporters in the early 1950s, "Why should anyone want to buy a radio . . . nine tenths of what one can hear is the continual drivel of second-rate jazz, sickening crooning by degenerate sax players, interrupted by blatant sales talks?" Yes, Lee, why should anyone indeed? more at http://www.leedeforest.org/broadcaster.html (via Mike Terry, dxldyg via DXLD) MUSEA +++++ MUSEUM OF TECHNOLOGY --- The Great War and W.W.II The Museum of Technology - Hemel Hempstead The Heritage Open Days (HODS) are on Thursday 6th, Friday 7th, Saturday 8th, and Sunday 9th September.
