Weak signal of Radio Afghanistan External Sce, July 11 1530&1600 on 6100 YAK 100 kW / 125 deg to SoAs English/Urdu from 1625 on 6100 YAK 100 kW / 125 deg to SoAs NO SIGNAL http://swldxbulgaria.blogspot.com/2018/07/weak-signal-of-radio-afghanistan.html (Ivo Ivanov, SWLDXBulgaria News, July 11-12, DX LISTENING DIGEST) ** ALBANIA [non]. 9395, UT Wed July 11 at 0230, WRMI starting R. Tirana relay in English, never mentioning that it is still on SW, let alone via WRMI! Had been scheduled at 0200-0230 Tue-Sat, but July 7 caught in progress at 0240. So appears to be permanent change to 0230- 0300; and preceded by `Wavescan` (see also USA: WRMI). Sked grids via http://www.tinyurl.com/WRMIfqs still do not account for this. The transmission sked for 9395 shows Tirana at 0200-0230 & Oldies at 0230-0300. The supposedly more detailed program schedule below for System G shows `Wavescan` 7 days a week at 0200-0230 (or rather displayed in EDT as 2200-2230), but the adjacent block for frequency is blank, presumably meaning 9395 and/or 5950 as immediately above and below it. 0230-0300 UT allegedly Oldies daily on 9395 only (Glenn Hauser, OK, WORLD OF RADIO 1939, DX LISTENING DIGEST) ** ALGERIA. 891 | ALGERIA | Chaine 1, Algiers, JUL 8 0101 - Woman with news in Arabic; fair. (Mark Connelly*Y-MA, IRCA via DXLD) OK, so Algeria 891 is back on now. 73 KAZ (Neil Kazaross IL/WI, ibid.) On a recent KiwiSDR check, they were being received in Italy at local level. Apparently their years of testing, sporadic DRM and silence are over (Chuck Hutton, ibid.) I can confirm that they were well heard on a bedside portable last week in Italy (John Fisher, Kingston, ON, ibid.) The station had a decent signal, about equal to 890 (Progreso/WAMG), which is not bad considering the rather poor to mediocre TA conditions this time of year. Audio was actually decent as well, something that wasn't always a sure thing in the past. Thanks to Chuck Hutton and John Fisher for the comments based on closer-up listening (Mark Connelly, MA, WA1ION, South Yarmouth, MA, ibid.) Further inland, listen for the 1 kHz het evenings (gh, DXLD) ** ANGUILLA. 11775, July 15 at 1242 no signal from CB/TUN/PMS/DGS even tho it`s Sunday morning --- but it is on by 1303, now // 13845 WWCR. Standard behavior has been to continue thru Sunday night/Monday morning on 6090, Monday day on 11775, after 2200 on 6090, but then gone again until next Sunday morning. Rick Barton, AZ, heard it turn off abruptly at 0305* UT Tuesday June 26. The transmitter is obviously working fine, but they no longer choose to run it 24/7 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST) ** ARGENTINA [non]. 9395, UT Saturday July 14 at 0120, music on WRMI sure doesn`t sound like RAE, but I keep listening to be sure: 0122 on to ``Georgia on My Mind``, 0125 usual canned Bob Biermann ID during `Oldies` service but never uttering that word; and more music. AND it`s // 5950. 9395 & 5950 are supposed to be the RAE relay in English during this hour UT Tue-Sat (Glenn Hauser, OK, WORLD OF RADIO 1939, DX LISTENING DIGEST) I was listening casually to WRMI’s oldies on 9395 kHz. tonight (Mon. evening in NA, Tues. 0100 UTC) when the scheduled RAE Argentina to the World relay came on air at 0100 with an announcement that it was changing its format from a one hour to a half hour nightly program with a more “lively” and focused tone. Sure enough, tonight’s program lasted a half hour with a newscast focused on Argentina and South American events and issues followed by a profile and interview of an Argentinian musician interspersed with selections of his music. At 0130, WRMI’s oldies returned (John Figliozzi, Halfmoon, NY, UT July 17, dxldyg via WORLD OF RADIO 1939, DX LISTENING DIGEST) ** ARMENIA. ARMENIA' S PUBLIC RADIO RE-LAUNCHES GEORGIAN-LANGUAGE BROADCASTS YEREVAN, JULY 12. The Public Radio of Armenia is re-launching Georgian-language broadcasts after a two-year hiatus. The PR department of the Public Radio said that the news will from now on be also available in Georgian in both audio and transcript versions on the website. Edited and translated by Stepan Kocharyan (via Steve Whitt, July 12, MWCircle yg via DXLD) ** AUSTRALIA. 5055, 4KZ. Recently had been hearing a 1151* cut off time and speculated was on a timer. July 9, at 1118-1150* (very close to 1151); playing Bobby Darin - "Dream Lover," Crowded House - "Don't Dream It's Over," etc. On July 10, was close to 1150:43* and on July 11, off close to 1150:35*, so yes definitely closing down via a timer. 5055, 4KZ, July 16, at 1111, played Eddie Floyd's song "Knock On Wood"; cut off close to 1150:09*; on July 13, cut off close to 1150:26*, so each day off a little earlier than before (previously - July 11, close to 1150:35*, July 10, close to 1150:43*) (Ron Howard, Asilomar State Beach, CA, Etón E1, antenna: 100' long wire, WOR iog via WORLD OF RADIO 1939, DXLD) ** AUSTRALIA. 15400, July 12 at 2354, very poor signal in talk at first seems Brazuguese? Surely not; fades up a bit to display that unmistakable Burmese lilt. As RBA is scheduled now. Poor as it is, the OSOB --- except for VG 15730 Cuba (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST) Weak/fair signal of Reach Beyond Australia, July 17 1230-1245 on 9670 KNX 100 kW / 335 deg to SEAs English Mon-Sat 1245-1300 on 9690 KNX 100 kW / 335 deg to SoAs English Daily http://swldxbulgaria.blogspot.com/2018/07/weakfair-signal-of-reach-beyond.html (Ivo Ivanov, SWLDXBulgaria News, July 16-17, DX LISTENING DIGEST) ** AUSTRALIA. Re. ``Rumour: When the RA SW transmitters were turned off, the water that cools the transmitters wasn't drained & allowed to sit within the transmitter cooling pipes & subsequently it has been mentioned that pipes have rusted & transmitters may not be usable without significant investment of replacement parts,(if available) & time/labour or new transmitters may now be required if service was to be restored.`` Have particular mothballing precautions been taken, like in Russia where thus reviving transmitters at Yakutsk and Petropavlovsk was possible? Presumably not, considering that soon after the closure the whole property was for sale. Under such circumstances the rumour sounds absolutely plausible, also because it is just the same story as told at an East German mediumwave site (Wilsdruff) a few years after the use of the high power transmitter ceased: Could it be reactivated? In theory yes, but we had to drain it because it is leaking, so first this would have to be repaired, and then further trouble is to be expected, so it just would make no sense to try to use the 40 year old beast again and a new transmitter would be brought in, should a new customer pop up (which in the end indeed happened). Just what Dave already wrote, and here it was before already a bit of a challenge to resume transmissions after a mere six months. It involved retubing, and the first one of the shiny new tubes went BANG within half an hour... But there is also another theory: That the whole discussion is a summer theatre (although it is a winter theatre of course...), staged to deflect attention away from recent developments at the international services of the ABC. Here the Australia Plus website has recently been shut down. Now sections in Chinese, Indonesian and Papua-Pidgin have been added to the general ABC news website and made accessible, by putting links on the landing page, only after some time. But Vietnamese just disappeared. The same goes for Radio Australia: Its old website had content in foreign languages as well, in this case also French, Burmese and Cambodian. They all quietly went away with a relaunch of the website, the new one is English-only. No way to find out what became of radio productions, like the ones in Cambodian that could be confirmed on FM in Phnom Penh as recently as in last year. There used to be reporting about such developments in earlier years. Not so this time. Just deafening silence (Kai Ludwig, July 15, shortwavesites yg via WORLD OF RADIO 1939, DX LISTENING DIGEST) ** AUSTRIA. The Monday only SAARC (The South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation) news bulletin in English; “Assalamu alaikum. This is Bangladesh Betar”; item - UN Secretary-General's visit to Bangladesh regarding refugees, etc.; less than semi-readable due to CODAR and CNR1 QRM; 1242 into Bangla (Ron Howard, Asilomar State Beach, CA, Etón E1, antenna: 100' long wire, WOR iog via DXLD) Reception of Bangladesh Betar in English on July 10: 1745-1900 on 13580 DKA 250 kW / 320 deg to WeEu English, very good http://swldxbulgaria.blogspot.com/2018/07/reception-of-bangladesh-betar-in.html (Ivo Ivanov, SWLDXBulgaria News, July 10-11, DX LISTENING DIGEST) ** BHUTAN. 6035, BBS, on July 14, at 1110, noted mixing with FM99 relay via Yunnan and also with jamming here, BBS cut off at 1133*, leaving just jamming and Yunnan (Ron Howard, Asilomar State Beach, CA, Etón E1, antenna: 100' long wire, WOR iog via DXLD) ** BOUGAINVILLE. 3325, NBC Bougainville, on July 8, noted that Voice of Indonesia started QRM at *1056, in English; mixing with NBC. On July 9, at 1016 with local Bougainville news in English; today VOI *1116. On July 10, NBC with 1204* cut off. Almost daily I scan 90m for PNG stations (and 3905), but for a long time now only 3260 & 3325 are active. 3325, NBC Bougainville, on July 16, noted 1200*. Unable to hear Voice of Indonesia till after 1200, as NBC was so much stronger today than VOI (Ron Howard, Asilomar State Beach, CA, Etón E1, antenna: 100' long wire, WOR iog via DXLD) ** BRAZIL. July 13 at 0543-0554 UT, I survey the mostly JBA carriers from overnight stations, some with a bit of audio, to measure them precisely, as to be a Brazilian SW station, you *must* be off- frequency: 11934.938, R. Evangelizar 11855.825, R. Aparecida 9818.834, R. Nove de Julho 9725.359, R. Evangelizar 9664.408, R. Voz Missionária 9630.552, R. Aparecida 9564.960, Super R. Deus é Amor [vs over-run Cuban jamming] (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST) ** BRAZIL. [Re 18-28:] 11726, 11699 The play-by-play announcer mentioned Uruguay at one point, so I guess it's the match between Uruguay and France. I must have caught the header goal at 1457. There seemed to be a quick station ID at 1511 but I couldn't copy. Pretty distorted. Ha!! Looks like France just scored again. I just heard another "GOALLLL" at 1519 and the beginning of "La Marseillaise" played. Now at 1522 thought I heard mention of "Radio Globo", but not sure. OK, it looks like this is R. Nacional da Amazonia. Got several "Nacional" jingle IDs (Dave Valko, Dunlo USA, [no date!], SW Bulletin July 15 via DXLD) [non]. 11780, July 11 at 1319, weak carrier seems to be open. Maybe it`s RNA, but no FM blobs circa 11727 & 11699, nor was 11780 detectable before 1300. Rather, 11780 probably CRI Kunming in Myanmarianese which starts at 1300, with neither RNA-FM nor AM today (Glenn Hauser, OK, WORLD OF RADIO 1939, DX LISTENING DIGEST) [non non] 11780, Radio Nacional da Amazonia, Brasilia, 2005-2020, 11- 07, Portuguese, soccer comments. 24322. Also heard 1740-1753, 15-07, Portuguese, soccer comments about the World Soccer Cup final. 24332 (Manuel Méndez, Lugo, Spain, Logs in Reinante, Tecsun S-8800, cable antenna, 8 meters, WOR iog via DX LISTENING DIGEST) 11780-AM, July 13 at 1340, Brazuguese talk at S9, so RNA is back in whack, instead of FM circa 11727 & 11699 as heard a few days previously, morning and evening. No Anguilla on 11775 to bother, as PMS remains mum Tuesday-Saturday (Glenn Hauser, OK, WORLD OF RADIO 1939, DX LISTENING DIGEST) ** BURKINA FASO. RCI April 27 1974 --- Dear Glenn, I am in the process of digitizing some 1000+ cassette tapes spanning recordings I made between 1972 and the late 1990s. One of those tapes was labeled on RCI. After listening to the digitized content I discovered it contained all of a Saturday mailbag program and nearly all of a 'club' program from April 27 1974 (actually it would have been UT 4/28 as it's most likely I recorded it during the 0100 broadcast on 6085). It was recorded in Winston-Salem, NC, using a Sears Com/Trek 7 with simple long wire antenna. I thought you and some of your readers might enjoy this walk down SWL memory lane: A mp3 audio file is available at this link: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1JPZ7_4shbdS5kNNdJyr7X3Z1T0c1YGKE/view?usp=sharing (not my unit, but an exact replica of what I used for some 8 years to listen) -- (Keith Weston http://keithweston.com http://www.facebook.com/keithweston July 15, DX LISTENING DIGEST) ** CANADA. 6754/USB, CHR, Trenton Military; 0434, 7/8; Euro A/P volmet, most with the ever-popular “No report received”; Shannon had info! Hi Glenn, Now being reported (July 13) - China on 6030 kHz, heard in DRM with traditional Chinese music. http://radio.chobi.net/DX/bbs/?res:731#3351 Have been reporting the absence of CNR1, on 6030, since June 27, so DRM is certainly a new development (Ron Howard, WOR iog via DX LISTENING DIGEST) Hi Glenn, July 13, at 1212, on 6030, was still hearing the low powered Calgary station (CFVP relaying CKMX AM 1060) and what sounded like some light Cuban jamming (fading out?). Nothing that sound like a strong China DRM signal that was reported earlier today (0230+ UT). So still no CNR1 during my monitoring. 6030, am not positive as to what is happening here? Still hearing Calgary (CFVP), but sounds to me like it could also be DRM from China. On July 16, at 1242, possibly a DRM signal; would seem rather late to be hearing strong Cuban jamming. Needs more work (Ron Howard, California, WOR iog via WORLD OF RADIO 1939, DX LISTENING DIGEST) ** CHINA. 6035, FM99 (Voice of Shangri-la) via Yunnan. On July 15, at 1300 with time pips and singing ID (several clear mentions of "Radio"); usual FM format. When I returned home, checked at 1500 for their live audio streaming at http://www.wodt.net/play/2568-1-1.html and indeed heard the identical singing ID jingle; also via on-line streaming an occasional mention of "Shangri-la," as on the web it's shown as FM99 Voice of Shangri-la. Program schedule (Chinese) - http://www.qingting.fm/radios/20139 Still hearing an UNID jammer here, that started about June 27. My audio at http://goo.gl/ZB1u6m (Ron Howard, Asilomar State Beach, CA, Etón E1, antenna: 100' long wire, WOR iog via DXLD) ** CHINA. 9820, Beibu Bay Radio, 1136-1310, July 12. Mostly in Chinese and Vietnamese; EZL pop songs; each ToH Chinese and English time checks for Beijing time. Has been a long time since I last checked this frequency, as in the past it was always found with stronger stations blocking reception, but not so now; nice clear frequency and good signal; occasional IDs in English; // 5050. July 13, with "Showtime"(?) music show, playing top ten songs; fair. (Ron Howard, Asilomar State Beach, CA, Etón E1, antenna: 100' long wire, WOR iog via WORLD OF RADIO 1939, DX LISTENING DIGEST) ** CHINA [and non]. 11985, July 15 at 1244, Firedragon music jamming mixing with Chinese talk, i.e. RTI as scheduled this hour only. See also TAIWAN [and non] (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST) ** COLOMBIA. 5910.3, Alcaraván Radio, Puerto Lleras, 0448-0510, 13-07, Latin American songs. Very weak. 15311. (Méndez) 6009.9, La Voz de Tu Conciencia, Puerto Lleras, 0445-0458, 14-07, Latin American songs. Very weak. 14311 (Manuel Méndez, Lugo, Spain, Logs in Reinante, Tecsun S-8800, cable antenna, 8 meters, WOR iog via DX LISTENING DIGEST) ** CONGO. 6115, Radio Congo, Brazaville, 1820-2005, 11-07, French, comments, ID “Radio Congo”, African songs. 14321 (Manuel Méndez, Lugo, Spain, Logs in Reinante, Tecsun S-8800, cable antenna, 8 meters, WOR iog via DX LISTENING DIGEST) ** CUBA. 9554 approx., July 11 at 1226, filthy spur from 9570 CRI relay in Cantonese; it`s partially readable in FM mode, but not strong enough to clear up; also another about 9586. No F# tones as on the 13 MHz spurs. Very strong 9570 itself is in pure AM only. Something`s always wrong at RadioCuba (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST) 11880, July 12 at 2340, RHC in wrong language instead of English --- Spanish! // 11700, 11760, 11830, 11840, 11850, 12000, 9535. Mostly undermodulated; 11700 also continues to clash with Romania in Spanish. Strongest are 11760 & 11840. At 2348, I can tell 5040 only is still English, but very poor vs storm noise level, and also seems undermod. 12000, July 13 at 0006, dead air except for squeal infesting this transmitter as usual; still undermodulating on 11840, 11760, 11700, and 11880 is off. Something`s always wrong at RHC (Glenn Hauser, OK, WORLD OF RADIO 1939, DX LISTENING DIGEST) 13740, July 13 at 1309, RHC with squeal typical of this frequency/transmitter. Something`s always wrong at RHC. 13700 should also be on after 1300, but a JBA carrier, else? At *1309.6, signal surges up a bit so I can hear some RHC modulation, but still much weaker than 13740. I`m afraid this is not enough to audiblize a panoply of parasitic FM spurs, should they be trying to radiate them today. Something`s always wrong at RHC. 1334 recheck, now 13700 is S6 and air seems dead again, whilst 13740 is S9+20/30 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST) 12000, July 13 at 2330, RHC English on wrong frequency! // 11880, but 12000 is supposed to be Spanish, which remains on 11850, 11840, 11830, 11760 and 11700, and during this weekday hour only, separate Spanish `Mesa Redonda` TV soundtrack on 11950. Something`s always wrong at RHC (Glenn Hauser, OK, WORLD OF RADIO 1939, DX LISTENING DIGEST) 6000, July 14 at 0117, RHC English is way undermodulated, // better mod on 6165. Something`s always wrong at RHC. 6060, July 14 at 0530, this RHC English frequency is off; 6000 undermodulated; 6100 good; 6165 best modulation and signal, slightly better than the fifth of The Cuban Five, 5040. At 0553 I rate 6000 as JBM = just barely modulated. The relative quality of these, and which may be missing, vary greatly from one night to the next. Something`s always wrong at RHC. 6000, July 16 at 1314, RHC is still on in undermodulated Spanish, but not 6100, both nominally 1300*. Something`s always wrong at RHC. 5040, July 17 at 0549, RHC in wrong language, Spanish instead of English, S9+10 and undermodulated. English remains on 6000 suptorted and undermodulated; 6060 undermodulated; 6100 very poor signal; 6165, best and really the only good frequency now: something`s always wrong at RHC, but ¡viva la redundancia! (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST) ** CUBA. Hi, Glenn, The link you sent me for Radio Havana Cuba worked for a long time. Then, it quit. For a week or so before it quit, the link would play the RHC interval signal, twice, then go silent. Thus, I know it is something they did. I recorded lots of RHC for Carrie, Spanish and Esperanto. If you might have a new link, I would try it. Thank you for what you do. 73, (Tim Hendel, Huntsville AL, via DXLD) The RHC streams via publicradiofan.com are not working either, and on the homepage I don`t see any link to listen en vivo, so maybe they have stopped doing it? They do however, have a huge archive of audios on demand via: http://www.radiohc.cu/audios --- Then I do see an en vivo link on the audios page --- and it does work by own embedded player: http://www.radiohc.cu/assets/streaming.html I should think you would get excellent reception of some of the RHC SW frequencies, anyway (Glenn to Tim, ibid.) The Radio Havana link worked. However, it took a very long time to come up. I almost thought it was not going to work. I have Windows 7; don't know if that makes a difference. You would fully expect that I would have a nice, clear signal from Havana on SW. Sometimes I do. However, there is so much ambient noise around here, on both MW and SW, even if I go outside. It just seems to emanate from the power lines, all over. So, you can't always get the clarity I want. Thank you for your help. Glenn, I want to let you know that I just recorded a newscast from RHC, using the new link you sent me. You will be interested to know that the audio seems much improved over the previous link, which you had sent to me, and which I had been using. For one thing, both left and right channels play with equal volume and clarity. Previously, the right channel had intermittent audio. Thanks. 73, (Tim Hendel, Huntsville AL, ibid.) ** CUBA. UHF Interference --- One of our WTFDA members in Cuba writes: ********************* Dear Mike, thank you again for the VU Digests. In the last four month dxing has been very frustrating for me by the fact than since the month of March an interference has appeared in the frecuencies that include the channels from the 23 to the 36 aprox. I been in the rooftop many times trying to find what could be the cause and I had done many other test without finding a solution. Along this many test that I have done I could confirm the following conclusions. It is not the Research Communications preamp (because the same problems happens when I tested the CM 4251 with the titan CM 7777 switched in the uhf separated input modality); It is not a problem with the 4251 feed (neither a soldering problem with the VA3RR that I had adapted copied from image event nor the original two bowties with reflector feed that I still preserve at home); It is not a problem from the current or from another defectous device at home (refrigerator, wireless phone, etc.); It not a defect from the Zenith box (the same happen with the Toshiba TV I bought to my mother). It seems that is neither a problem coming through the feedline (I completed eliminated any twinlead and now I feeding with the balun practically soldered to the feed point and then an RG6 cable come out from the balun. I also have removed the two smaller dipoles from the VA3RR lpda feed (So, there are only six dipoles instead of eight) in case that interference may come from an upper frecuency like higher than 800 MHz. I`ve also thought that the interference may come from possible 4G LTE test in the 700 MHz band but I had found out here in the cellphone company and they had told me that the only 4G test had been done in the 1800 MHz band. Mike, the only possible interference that I can see with my eyes is when I tune the TV with its analog tuner is a black snow on the channel 29 that look to be spread on the frecuencies between channels 23 and the 35 aprox. This black snow on the 29 come from a point that is just 5 degrees to the left from the azimuth from where I point my 4251 to Miami. If that is the reason, it will be very difficult to deal with. I`m thinking to cover the 4251 reflector with chicken mesh to increase the F/B and F/R ratios to reject better interferences but if it comes from the front I don`t know what to do. Mike, I really wanted to do some E skip in the low VHF (in fact I had prepared a channel 3 yagi for it) but I`ve lost the motivations with this fact about the interference. I also had to cancel the possibility to buy a Sony TV until I can solve the problem. Mike, if you have any suggestion or recommendations about it, please let me know it. Thank you again for everything Pedro César Morales **************************************** Does Havana have any DTV stations on the air? Could that be the source of his interference??? (Mike Bugaj, Enfield, CT, WTFDA gg via DXLD) TDT (DTMB) was rolled out in Cuba island-wide in 2014. I don't have the technical data for each facility, but I have attached the map for the transmitter locations in the immediate Havana area. Perhaps some of the engineers in the WTFDA group would have suggestions about his RF problems?? (Jim Thomas, Springfield, Missouri, ibid.) Everyone keeps forgetting I keep a TV database going on my website. Known DTV stations in blue : http://dxinfocentre.com/tv-car.htm#CUB (Bill Hepburn, Ont., ibid.) It shows the nearest Habana DTV channel is 36; also an analog on 27. Of course some of the other localities could be close by; provinces are not shown; a Matanzas DTV on 31. You can rent airtime for only 15 € / hour (discounts for bookings on a larger scale are possible) on our transmitter, that guarantees good reception all over Europe on our frequency of 6070 kHz. You might deliver your programs as mp3 on our server or with some kind of DropBox; for live programs / internet streaming we have a fast internet connection with up to 100 MB/sec. download capacity. You would have the advantage that we don't switch on the transmitter only if someone rented airtime - this would mean, that only listeners looking for your program would hear you, but your program will be embedded in our own schedule with music, the in Europe well known "Jammin' Oldies" - show presented by Conny Ferrin, and Offshore Radio history. So you will get a lot of new listeners for free! Our customer "Radio Oberlausitz International" got for the first eight weeks on our station, only on air on Saturday evenings, more than 2.700 reception reports from all over the world! Japan Panel OKs NHK's Simultaneous Online Program Streaming https://jen.jiji.com/jc/eng?g=eco&k=2018071301208 Tokyo, July 13 (Jiji Press) -- A communications ministry panel compiled a draft report Friday that gives the green light to Japan Broadcasting Corp., or NHK, distributing its programs on television and the Internet at the same time. In the draft, the panel says that it has found the simultaneous online streaming largely acceptable as a means for NHK to supplement its conventional TV broadcasting. The panel will allow the move if certain conditions are met, including viewer support and cuts in subscription fees by the public broadcaster, which has a strong financial base. NHK will also be required to work together with commercial broadcasters and carry out reform in its governance to prevent misconduct by its employees, such as the embezzlement of subscription fees, from happening again, according to the draft. The company is hoping to start the simultaneous streaming service in fiscal 2019, ahead of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics. (2018/07/13-22:52) (via Mike Cooper, DXLD) ** JAPAN [and non]. ID on web stream now only mentions FM. 1390, XETL-VER, Missing from 5/18 IFT list, but top-of-hour ID on web stream gives a full ID for both AM & FM, and station web page and Facebook page still refer to 1390 AM. 1400, XESH-NL, ID on web stream only mentions AM, gives power as 1 kW (formerly 5 kW?). Last year the web stream was giving weird IDs that made the station sound like an internet-only station, but this year they are giving a very clear ID for XESH 1400 AM. No mention of FM simulcast. 1430, XEOX-SON, Looks like their FM has moved from 106.5 to 99.3. I heard something about the 106-108 MHz range being cleared for indigenous stations, so I presume that is what happened here. AM has been logged here earlier this year but the station is missing from the 5/18 IFT list. 1450, XEJD-VER, This station must have finished migrating to FM, because there is a CP for a new station XEPREP. 1460, XECB-SON, Still listed on old frequency of 1450 kHz on IFT list. They left 1450 many years ago. They are still active on 1460 kHz (I drove through their coverage area last month). 1470, XEACE-SIN, Station confirmed by FB message 7/18 that the AM is still active. So, the IFT list hasn't improved much. It continues to list stations that are gone, and fails to list some stations that are still on the air (though to be fair, some of these stations may have expired licenses!). It does include a few dozen new CPs, which is interesting. Most are on frequencies vacated by stations that moved to FM (which totally defeats the purpose of the migration). One of the original Mexican X-band allocations, 1670 Reynosa, now has a call sign, so perhaps we'll find a station there someday. In any case, the FM migration is definitely progressing, with just over 60% of stations now seemingly having left AM. I've been hearing XEBU since I first moved here 42 years ago, so it seems odd that they're gone now. At the moment it looks like there may be 10 channels (half of them in the X-band) with no remaining Mexican stations, 15 channels with only 1 Mexican station, 21 with only 2 stations, 16 with 3 and 17 with 4. Those numbers will shift slightly as I (hopefully) hear back from a few more stations... 73 (Tim Hall, July 12, ABDX yg via WORLD OF RADIO 1939, DXLD) More updates: 620, XEBU-CHIH, Station confirmed by FB message 7/18 that the AM is gone. 650, XETNT-SIN, Station confirmed via FB message 7/18 that they are continuing to operate on 650 kHz AM. Also ahhhh I'm buried in stuff from above... Let me respond to some of the things mentioned above by Tim. San Luis Río Colorado "XEDY-1080 was still off. They had been simulcasting XHDY-107.1 "Rio Digital 107.1" for several years so I would bet the AM is gone for good. XEMW-1260, which had also been simulcasting XHDY-107.1 in recent years, is now simulcasting new XHMW-93.9 "Rio Digital 93.9". I would bet this AM will disappear soon too. When I was in Scottsdale this week, KSUR was crushing KBSZ at night. I would bet they clobber XEMW at night too." The current pairing is XECB 1460 + XHDY 107.1. This report though raises some serious questions about OIR's second-wave migrants. 93.9 is XHLBL-FM but is being paired to XEMW, which migrated itself as XHEMW-FM 91.1, which is being paired to XELBL-AM 1350. I suspect they have the pairings switched, which makes a lot more sense. Guadalajara XEBON is 1280 -> 89.5 and XEMIA is 850 -> 90.3. Worth noting: migrants (first- and second-wave) do have to stay on AM for a year before leaving the air. The Radio Disney format in Latin America is a pop format, competing with Los 40, Exa, etc. The format is operated in Mexico by Grupo ACIR. Monterrey I think sometimes they run Trión on 89.3 in off hours, especially weekends, now? XEMON is 1370 -> 89.3, so at least that is correct. XEIZ won't be moved to Primera Cadena any time soon, not with the FM usurping that role. Continuity obligations, Combos of '94, etc. "I have trouble believing if XEBAC-1100 and XEPAS-1200 are really on the air in BC Sur" It's impossible to know for sure with Promomedios California, which is one of the most opaque station groups in the country, but they do indeed have continuity obligations that require them to remain on the air. The IFT is supposed to conduct a review of these soon. With Grupo Chávez Radio (XETNT, XEREV), they've kept up some AMs longer than they were allowed simply because they can't let go. Chávez has been reported to want to stay on AM. I don't know how they can justify it. As to the other stations: XETL and XEOX's AM departures are surrender upon renewal (they decided not to pay to renew the AM), so they should be goners soon. (XHOX/Son.'s move to 99.3 is indeed a clearing of 106- 108, which I refer to as an "Article 90 reserved band clear" or "A90 clear".) 1670 Reynosa was just awarded earlier this year to a cultural group (Fomento Cultural de Reynosa, thus the XEFCR calls), which would make it the first new X-bander in a number of years. XEYC returned to 1460 in late May. I have no idea what happened here, but at least listings match now. Escápate al Paraíso, for the record, is Grupo Acustik, a new radio and TV group that has attracted a lot of attention from media experts (I was one of the first). They got quite a few stations in IFT-4 through a number of concessionaires (the AMs account for most of the total). Acustik also operates a pirate 95.3 in Cancún, a semi-pirate 104.3 whose legal situation is best described as very complicated, and a cable channel. SoCal-Targeting Mexican AM Flipping To Chinese. Jul 10, 2018 Updated Jul 10, 2018 http://www.insideradio.com/free/socal-targeting-mexican-am-flipping-to-chinese/article_d5c425c0-840c-11e8-889e-df1a4cd5925c.html A change of language is in the works for a cross-border AM station targeting the San Diego and Los Angeles markets. Grupo Latino de Radio (GLR) has informed the Federal Communications Commission that it is selling the Tijuana-based XEWW (690) and the station will flip from Spanish-language news-talk “W Radio” to a Chinese-language programming. In a filing with the International Bureau, GLR says it has agreed to sell its equity stake in XEWW to H&H Group USA. Financial terms were not disclosed. H&H Group USA is 97% controlled by Vivian Huo, with the remaining 3% owned by Julian Sant. Both are U.S. citizens. Huo is the founder of H&H Capital Partners, a New York-based investment banking firm. The XEWW purchase is believed to be its first media-related deal. The sale, which doesn’t need FCC approval since it’s a Mexican- licensed station, is expected to close in mid-July. The International Bureau will however get a say in whether the Irwindale, CA-based radio team can continue to relay programming via the internet to the Mexican radio station. In a request, the company says other than ownership and programming language, the operation of the station will be similar to the permit last renewed by the FCC in June 2017. “The applicant proposes to provide a full range of Mandarin Chinese language programming,” the filing says, “including music, entertainment, weather report, local (Los Angeles) traffic report and local Chinese community news.” XEWW has 77,000-watts day and 5,000-watts night covering much of southern California. GLR has been operating the station under a programming and sales agreement since 2006. In recent years it has occasionally been tapped as an overflow station for the English- language play-by-play of USC Trojan football games when its regular flagship had a schedule conflict. The move to sell XEWW is ironic given the fact that GLR Radio—an American subsidiary of the Madrid-based Grupo Prisa—had at one time looked for ways to grow into the U.S. market. But it was blocked by foreign ownership limits. Now that the FCC has said it would consider allowing a foreign company to buy a U.S. radio station, GLR is exiting ownership one of the biggest radio markets in the country. It’s not clear if GLR plans to sell its only U.S. station, Spanish-language news-talk “Caracol 1260” WSUA in the Miami market (via WORLD OF RADIO 1939, DXLD) [more from Raymie`s Mexico Beat] Quote Originally Posted by Glen Hauser ``Is there a Disney in SS or are these normal Disney EE? 73 KAZ (Neil Kazaross, IL/WI, ibid.) While the stations have a definite commonality, they are also notably different in different markets in Latin America; the Buenos Aires Disney is not the same as the one in Santiago, Chile. The format is not syndicated; it is more like a franchise with guidelines on use of the trademark. Still no sign of XEAA-1340. I think they're just gone. They're owned by Grupo Radio Centro which has really been struggling (several of their Mexico City stations have been silent for years, with their formats and shows collapsed into the surviving stations). Grupo Radio Centro is the dominant radio group in Mexico City, the largest radio market in the Hemisphere, accounting for around 55% of the audience. They closed 790 1030 and 1150 because they were trying to avoid further investigation for being a monopoly, and they did not like the new license fees, either. All three of those stations combined did not have a 1 share in the sales demos, so there was no loss and the transmitter sites, now inside the populated areas, are worth more for real estate than as radio stations. While the group has to pay penalties for not building the TV web they were granted, they have always been late on payments, hoping to get discounts or that the debt will be forgiven. I think they still owe me some money from 1970! "Struggling" is not an adjective I'd apply to GRC. Contentious? That is a better fit. Last edited by DavidEduardo; 07-15-2018 at 02:59 AM (David E. Gleason, La Quinta CA, July 15, WTFDA Forum via DXLD) Try saying that to listeners in Mérida. Their cluster is way underpowered, the stations barely do anything and they have next to no social presence. In its non-Mexico City markets with an FM, GRC usually has a station in the top 10. Monterrey XHQQ-FM fights for ratings leadership here. Guadalajara XHDK was 7th in 2016, XHVOZ 12th. Durango XHRPU-FM is Durango's #2 station with a 12.6 share, only behind the 18.6 share commanded by XHDNG. Grupera commands 5 of the top 6 positions there. (INRA March 2016) Oaxaca In March 2015, XHRPO-FM La Z was fifth. XHKC had the worst ratings of all the commercial FMs in town (beating XHOAX is not an accomplishment). Torreón XHRCA-FM, with less than 1 kW ERP, rated fourth in Torreón in 2015. XEWN, then still not fully migrated, was sixth. There are other stations here too. Cancún XHCCQ-FM is Cancún's number one, with a commanding 26 share in July 2016. The exceptions were... León XHXV is 23rd in León. It's beaten by several AMs, the "I Don't Know" option, and XHNY of Irapuato in the November 2013 INRA survey. That's right, XHXV is losing to an Irapuato station. Mérida Planeta drew fewer responses than "I don't know" in June 2016. La Z didn't even register even though the top three stations accounting for 44% of share were grupera (XHMRI, XHMH, XHMT). INRA had no surveys on Twitter for Juárez, and Iguala is not a rated city. But Mérida's cluster is a sorry excuse (Raymie, ibid.) Keep in mind that many of the smaller market stations are "represented" by GRC, not owned. While station "rep firms" in the US only provide sales services in major buying centers, representatives in Mexico basically LMA a station under a profit sharing agreement, providing management services, programming, technical assistance and sales at the national level. Success in national sales is not really measured at the station level. If you represent a few hundred stations, the total delivery is what matters... and you get huge, global buys that average out between the bigger and smaller stations. Station owners in smaller markets make more money sharing those big pools of money than trying to compete alone. Somer, MVS, Radiorama, Megasima, Promosat and the rest all operate in similar fashion, administering far more stations than they actually own. And because of the anonymous nature of a Sociedad Anónima, it is frequently very hard to know who really owns a station (David Eduardo, ibid.) The stations I focused on are those directly owned by GRC that were once part of the Grupo Radio México structure. These stations are listed directly on GRC's site. These aren't stations owned by others and represented by OIR, or those owned by the Radio Grupo OIR in Sonora. These are stations that, since the consolidation of GRM and GRC, are GRC stations through and through. It's worth noting that XECCQ-XHCCQ's concession is in the Radiorama family. http://rpc.ift.org.mx/rpc/pdfs/090252648002c146.pdf This may become important soon; GRC won the priciest FM of them all in Cancún, XHPBCQ-FM 94.9, and it will be interesting to see if they move La Z, Cancún's ratings leader, to an owned station. Additionally, XHRRF-FM is somehow missing from the 2016 annual report list (so is XHETOR in Torreón, which is a more regularly operated station). ——— The IFT-6 station count is up to five. Testing has begun for XHICCH- TDT 30 in Chihuahua. It seems that for the moment, XHICCH is simulcasting its big brother, XHIJ Ciudad Juárez. In fact, it was an announcement during an XHIJ newscast that testing had begun that prompted this post. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WBjmfOViza8 You can be sure that soon, Intermedia will apply for multiprogramming and begin program production in Chihuahua Capital. It's unclear where the new station's broadcast equipment is located. The station is also using VC 30 right now. EDIT: A source has confirmed to me that XHICCH is on the IPN tower at Cerro El Coronel (XHCHI-TDT + XHCTCH-TDT). Last edited by Raymie; 07- 17-2018 at 02:23 PM (Raymie, July 17, ibid.) José Gutiérrez Vivó --- running the Instituto Mexicano de la Radio under AMLO? http://lapoliticaonline.com.mx/nota/113877-exclusivo-amlo-sondea-el-regreso-de-jose-gutierrez-vivo-para-imer/ It could very well happen, according to a report that says a team close to the president-elect has reached out to the journalist, currently living in Texas. To do it, AMLO's team would need to smooth the way forward given the rocky legal challenges he's faced since the collapse of Monitor. One of the reasons López Obrador might be especially interested is that Gutiérrez Vivó's legal problems began around the time López Obrador announced his first presidential ambitions in 2004 --- on Monitor (Raymie, July 17, ibid.) The real issue is the widely commented "state of mind" of Gutiérrez Vivó, which came into very documented play in the legal action between him and the Aguirre family. In addition, his administration of the two AMs he was given (1320 and 1560 in Mexico City) was spectacularly miserable, ending in bankruptcy and the closure of the stations. (David Eduardo Gleason, La Quinta, California, ibid.) Yeah, Monitor was definitely a chapter in Mexican broadcasting history, one with a lot of modern ramifications (the ending of the Monitor saga leads to the choice of dead XEINFO for second-wave migration, for instance). Gutiérrez Vivó is also 69, but given that current IMER director Carlos Lara Sumano will turn 74 this fall, that might not be so much of an issue. ——— From Mexico City to Colima, a community station so fast on the air I can't believe it! Testing begun before the concession was even received for XHSCAT-FM 107.5, the state's first community station, which will go by "Radio Colima". http://facebook.com/colimaradio XHSCAT is unusual in that it is directly owned by the Organización de Radios Comunitarias de México (legally still known as the Organización de Radios Comunitarias de Occidente), which has grown into one of the most important community station groups in the country with a good number of newly awarded stations in the fold. The station will broadcast to the Colima metropolitan area from Villa de Álvarez. Regular operation is due in October. There's also sad radio news from Morelos, where a pioneer of broadcasting in the southern part of the state has died after suffering a brain aneurysm. https://www.elsoldecuernavaca.com.mx/local/fallecio-eloy-martinez-silva-precursor-de-la-radio-en-el-sur-1842899.html Listeners grew to know Andrés Eloy Martínez Silva, who hosted the newscast El Autopista de la Comunicación on XEART (first on 1590, then on 1520 and now XHART-FM 89.3) for 33 years. He retired four years ago, having groomed his daughter Aracely Martínez Rojas to take his place. XEART came about after several attempts to buy radio stations elsewhere in Morelos, such as XEJC (now XHASM), fell through. They applied for the station in 1961 and didn't get it awarded for another 20 years. Last year, after the September 19 earthquake, the station was forced to leave its longtime home in the Plaza Yuliana mall in Jojutla after it sustained heavy damage; the station now has its studios in Zacatepec (Raymie, July 17, ibid.) The first of two IFT-4 AM stations in Coahuila's capital may begin testing as soon as today. XESORN-AM 610 marks the entrance into Saltillo for regional broadcaster Grupo M (Organización Radiofónica del Norte), with almost all of its stations in the northern reaches of the state. It will be called Viva Saltillo, using a similar logo to XHYJ-FM Nueva Rosita. https://twitter.com/SaltilloViva Viva Saltillo is promising a talk-heavy format with news programming powered by the Coahuila Hoy newspaper. Last Wednesday, the Viva Saltillo Twitter account said it was a week away from beginning program tests. This is the only Grupo M station born in IFT-4, though a clerical error resulted in the callsign XEUORN-AM being assigned in Uruapan, Michoacán. The owner of that station, Media Group, also owns the other AM station for Saltillo, XESAME-AM 930 (Raymie, July 18, ibid.) [and non] The IFT is on its annual two-week summer break, yet there seems to be no shortage of news from elsewhere. The latest news is on a second-wave migrant in Río Bravo, Tamaulipas. XHEOQ-FM 91.7 hit the air yesterday with the programming of XEOQ-AM 1110, one of the NotiGAPE stations. NotiGAPE provides primarily Radio Fórmula and local programs, though it also has some others (music in off hours and Noticias MVS in the morning). Grupo Gape operates a total of three second-wave migrants, including XEWD 1430 in Cd. Miguel Alemán (XHWD 95.9) and XEO 970 in Matamoros (XHO-FM 93.5). It also has two AMs that will not be migrating, XEFD (La Mejor) and XEOR in Reynosa, and serves as the local operator for Radio Fórmula's Tampico station. Oh, there's one more station they have now. And it's a doozy. On the Trail of 104.1 Not-So-Nuevo Laredo While looking on the Grupo Gape site to learn potentially more about XHEOQ (it's not even mentioned), I found they had added a station: 104.1 FM Nuevo Laredo. Wait a minute? There's no 104.1 in Nuevo Laredo! You're right. So I went digging, and I came up with the actual station. In 2014, the FCC granted Wendolynn Tellez's application for a new translator station in Laredo North, Texas. K281CB originally specified a stick along I-35 near Killam Industrial Blvd., but what was finally approved 11 years after application was five watts near the tiny town of Botines (one can easily imagine a Mexican objection causing this). Tellez made it her business to sell other translators she had picked up across the Lone Star State. She also owned one full-power station; in January, the FCC slapped her with an $8,000 NAL for unauthorized operation of KSAG in Pearsall at variance with approved facilities. Translators in Waco, Austin (3), Seguin (San Antonio rimshot), and Dilley are also in her name. Back in Laredo, Tellez sold K281CB to AF Group, LLC, in 2015. AF is owned by and named for Adriana Fernández, who has a mailing address in Indianapolis. In Indiana, Fernández was associated with a company she founded in 2015 known as Núcleo Radio Border LLC, which was administratively dissolved last year. FCCData shows a sale application for K281CB in March 2017 to Gape Group, LLC, evidently never consummated. Notwithstanding the continued legal ownership of K281CB by Fernández, Gape's presence in the paper trail should immediately attract attention. The new 104.1, or what the online stream claims is the new 104.1, IDs as "NotiGAPE Nuevo Laredo" and carries Radio Fórmula and NotiGAPE statewide programming (principally Segunda Cadena given the presence of XHNLT) as well as the Informe Brozo, syndicated by Acustik. The question is how this programming is being fed to the translator. Unless KBNL has this as an HD subchannel, which seems unlikely, the information the FCC has is incorrect. (This wouldn't be the first time a station in Texas claiming to retransmit KBNL has another program source, though.) http://forums.wtfda.org/showthread.php?9113-OPMA-is-changing&p=45987#post45987 After STA, K281CB came back online a week before Christmas. The station currently has a CP to move its tower back south slightly and cut its ERP from 50 watts to 40. Listening to NotiGAPE Nuevo Laredo, it's clear they are lacking commercials. Exiting a Radio Fórmula program at the end of the 12:00 hour, they played an ID (with no calls or identification of the program source) and went into a song that took up the entire break. RUSSIA MIGHT HAVE DIGITAL RADIO IN A COUPLE OF YEARS Digital radio broadcasting in Russia may begin in the next two to four years, according to a Radio 1 correspondent who spoke to the vice- president of the Russian Academy of Radio, Yuri Kostin. "It can happen within two years, it can happen in four years - it all depends on the development of technology. The introduction of the DRM + standard is still in the plans. It is necessary to develop regulatory acts that will allow stations to obtain broadcasting rights. I think that those stations that already broadcast in the FM- band will get the right to broadcast in the standard DRM +. New players will not go there," Kostin said. Alexander Zharov, the head of Roskomnadzor confirmed on the sidelines of the conference "The Future of Regional Radio" in Sochi that the technical possibility of switching to digital broadcasting standards in Russia exists. "At present, the State Commission for Radio Frequencies has opened all the doors. We have registered the standard DRM + and DAB. But the choice should be for the industry," he told a Radio 1 correspondent. The seventh edition of the conference took place on May 31 and June 1 with the support of the Federal Agency for Press and Mass Communications. The forum brought together more than 200 managers and key specialists from Russia's leading federal, regional and local radio stations. Opening the conference, the president of the Russian Academy of Radio, Andrei Romanchenko also called DRM + the most promising standard for the use in Russia. According to experts, the use of the DAB standard is also possible, but it meets the requirements of the infrastructure and market demands to a lesser degree. The DAB system allows to launch a broadband signal (1536 kHz) on one frequency, capable of broadcasting more than 20 sound programs. One such signal is called a "multiplex". The DRM + signal is 16 times narrower, its width is only 96 kHz. Narrowband DRM + signal allows transferring up to three stereo programs of audio broadcasting with better FM quality and a separate data transmission channel. According to the RAR, there are 3405 radio stations broadcasting in Russia now - 117 stations less than a year ago. Earlier in April, Minister of Communications and Mass Communications of the Russian Federation, Nikolai Nikiforov, held a meeting with the State Commission for Radio Frequencies (GKRC) during which the possibility of deploying DAB+ was discussed, where appropriate and dependent on availability of spectrum. Later that month, AsiaRadioToday’s Steve Ahern also attended the four- day Media Together Festival, which discussed a range of current trends in Russian radio, led by big name local identities and several international speakers (asiaradiotoday.com via BCLNES Il radioascolto in Italia 8 July 2018 via Rus-DX July 15 via DXLD) ** RUSSIA. What you may have missed, though, is the hacker/ham radio connection. The British Cave Rescue Council (BCRC) was asked for their expert help. [Rick Stanton], [John Volanthen] and [Rob Harper] answered the call. They were equipped with HeyPhones. The HeyPhone is a 17-year-old design from [John Hey, G3TDZ]. Sadly, [G3TDZ] is now a silent key (ham radio parlance for deceased) so he didn't get to see his design play a role in this high-profile rescue, although it has apparently been a part of many others in the past. The HeyPhone is actually considered obsolete but is still in service with some teams. The radio uses USB (upper sideband, not universal serial bus) at 87 kHz. The low frequency can penetrate deep into the ground using either induction loop antennas like the older Molephone, or - more commonly - with electrodes injecting RF energy directly into the ground. The antenna: A rhombic for transmissions to the Far East. I don't know whether this was just nonsense, having no other use for this prey facility, or really worked. WWFD 820 Becomes First All-Digital AM Station Here`s some news that I`m not sure how to feel about: https://news.radio-online.com/cgi-bin/rol.exe/headline_id=n35675 73, (Les Rayburn, N1LF, 121 Mayfair Park, Maylene, AL 35114, IRCA at HCDX via WORLD OF RADIO 1939, DXLD) Viz.: WWFD 820 AM Becomes First All-Digital AM Station RADIO ONLINE | Monday, July 16, 2018 | 8:09am CT In Washington DC, WWFD 820 AM The Gamut will be the first full time, all-digital AM radio station in the U.S. In an effort to keep up with the ever-evolving demand for digital, The Gamut will be turning off its analog signal and will no longer be accessible through regular AM radio beginning today, Monday, July 16 at noon. This announcement comes as a result of a collaborative effort between The Gamut and HD Radio, an Xperi Corporation brand, to give AM broadcasters parity in the car dashboard with FM HD Radio, satellite and internet streaming, among others. "My belief is that AM needs to start trending in this direction," said Dave Kolesar, the station's engineer and program director. "We're excited to be doing this extremely innovative project that has tremendous potential to make AM much more viable to distribute all formats." "Since the launch of HD Radio technology, Xperi has been committed to serving the current and future needs of terrestrial radio broadcasters," said Joe D'Angelo, SVP broadcast radio, Xperi. "Hubbard's decision to convert to all-digital operations illustrates the industry's continued commitment to over-the-air broadcasting and a long future for broadcast radio. With twenty percent of the vehicles on the road in the listening area equipped with an HD Radio receiver, the time couldn't be better for an all-digital trial." The conversion to all-digital is primarily expected to provide listeners with better sound quality and include new display features such as artist name, song title and even album artwork. Over the past few decades, issues like poor sensitivity and technical upkeep, quality of receivers and narrow audio bandwidth have contributed to the steady decrease in AM radio listenership. On July 6, The Gamut received an Experimental Authorization from the FCC to broadcast their AM station exclusively in digital. This conversion to all-digital now opens the door to a new audience for The Gamut and is an opportunity for an enhanced in-vehicle AM experience. The Gamut will still be accessible to listeners in Frederick, Maryland without HD Radio, who can find the station on regular analog FM at 94.3 FM (via WORLD OF RADIO 1939, DXLD) WWFD 820 is really also licensed to Frederick MD, but address on Idaho Ave NW, WDC, format AOR, 4300/430 watts U2, and NO IBOC shown in last year`s NRC AM Log (Glenn Hauser, DX LISTENING DIGEST) I just checked my overnight recordings and 820 is solid IBOC hash from 815 to 825 kHz, from sunset to sunrise. I can get around most IBOC noise by tuning the opposite LSB or USB but this covers the entire frequency. 820 is now pretty useless as a nighttime frequency. Frederick is 100 miles from here (Brett Saylor, State College, PA, July 17, IRCA via WORLD OF RADIO 1939, DXLD) I've been occasionally checking my daytime regular WWFD-820 Frederick MD which recently received an STA to operate all-digitally for the next year on an experimental basis. Yesterday morning I heard WWFD as usual on my analogue-only car radio on my way to work --- but this morning (17 July) it was just a digital hiss. And now I see this Radio Online article: https://news.radio-online.com/cgi-bin/rol.exe/headline_id=n35675 which says the switchover to all-digital was scheduled for 1200 ELT [sic] on Monday, July 16. So that's consistent with what I'm hearing (David Yocis, nrc-am gg via DXLD) How about - if a tree falls in a forest when nobody is around to hear it, does it really make any sound? I think this is pretty much on the same track. 73, (Kit W5KAT, CO, ABDX yg via DXLD) I bet it will mess up WEEU-830's nighttime coverage pretty badly (Tim Hall, ibid.) I wonder how many cars have radios that will be able to receive WWFD? (Jim, WA1EDN, ibid.) Maybe the calls stand for Who Wants Flippin' Digital? Just saying (Tim Hall, ibid.) There will now be just digital hash where the AM signal would have been. But the rush into this ignores some important points - 1. How many car radios are capable of receiving these transmissions? My understanding was that carmakers were reducing, not increasing the HD capability as standard equipment because it hadn't caught on. 2. How many listeners are driven off by the low range AM signal - which will continue and perhaps be worse - and not by analog 3. How many people actually listen on AM anyway and would this change them? I predict this adventure will fail (Russ Edmunds, 15 mi NW Phila, Grid FN20id, IRCA at HCDX via DXLD) Let`s hope so. I was unimpressed even with HD FM coverage. Too many drop outs. Is 1500 in DC still iboc? (Russ Johnson, Sent from my iPhone, ibid.) 1500 WFED isn't on IBOC right now, and I don't recall it being on any time recently. According to Barry's site it's been off since 2007 (Brett Saylor, State College, PA, ibid.) It's not WWFD 820; it's "WWFD 800--810--820--830--840" :-)) Cheers! (Mark Durenberger, mobile, ibid.) Is it? Since they have no analog, there's no reason for them to use the hybrid mode of IBOC which has both analog and digital. That is what causes the interference to adjacent channels and limits the IBOC coverage a bit. If they use the all digital mode, there are different expectations for interference and coverage amd we'll have to re- analyze things. But I'm unaware as to whether all digital IBOC has FCC approval (Chuck Hutton, ibid.) AFAIK it doesn't. And it may not be installed anyway. I think this is a gimmick to see what happens. But with listeners realizing they can go to 94.3 (and get better coverage anyway) --- (Russ Edmunds, 15 mi NW Phila, Grid FN20id, ibid.) As a regular licensed mode of operation, no; which is exactly why Hubbard and the HD Radio folks are conducting this test under experimental authority. I'm going to be interviewing WWFD's Dave Kolesar this evening for a new episode of my "Top of the Tower" podcast, to be released tomorrow. If anyone on the list has questions about the purpose of the test or the technology behind it, hit me up and I'll ask him! s (Scott Fybush, ibid.) Scott, Thank you for this opportunity. I`m interested in knowing what format WWFD currently runs, and if they plan to change or modify the format to fit the `All Digital` operation. Also, do they plan to promote the `All Digital` format within the market? How are they going to promote it? Any chance we`ll see the `All Digital` experiment expanded to FM within the DC market? 73, (Les Rayburn, N1LF, ibid.) Some of this I can answer even before interviewing Dave - the format is called "The Gamut," which is a true "we play everything" variety mix that goes back as far as the 1940s. It's been running on WWFD for the last few years, as well as on HD2 subs of co-owned WTOP in Washington and its FM relay out in Virginia. It's important to note here that the format isn't especially important to what's essentially a technical test. The whole reason they're using the WWFD AM signal for this is because it's not doing anything, business-wise, for them. Most Gamut listeners are tuned into the HD2s or the analog FM translators that relay them, or are on the stream. The idea here is to get a real-world sense of how the AM all-digital mode works, and I expect a lot of engineers will be out this summer driving the signal, taking measurements and learning how well their theoretical predictions match reality. (I hope to join them at some point!) I doubt there will be much promotion to general audiences, though I'm sure they'll welcome any feedback they get (Scott Fybush, ibid.) Ah, I understand now. I suppose it makes sense as a technical test. Washington, DC is `worst case` scenario in terms of multi path, signal obstructions, etc. If it performs well there, it should do even better in most locations. We have a client in DC and get there often. I`m supposed to be there for two weeks in August. I`ll be ``driving the signal` myself. 73, (Les Rayburn, N1LF, ibid.) I`ll suggest a more mundane reason. Ibiquity is headquartered in Germantown MD and just like they did their experimental tests for hybrid mode not too far away, they are now doing their full IBOC tests nearby (Chuck Hutton, ibid.) Is this full IBOC still going to be the off channel crap we've suffered with for many years or will it be on channel? 73 KAZ (Neil Kazaross, IL/WI, ibid.) No, it`s very different because there's no need to avoid bothering the analog part. Currently the hybrid system puts a lot of IBOC energy far from the analog carrier where it bothers adjacent analog carriers. The all digital system can put more energy around the carrier frequency as it won't bother itself. It will bother far away stations. This is why I am saying to people that they can not use their prior IBOC experiences to imagine what will happen with all digital IBOC (Chuck Hutton, ibid.) But come on, It's HD --- hiss hiss. DX'ers hate it and if it's all digital and doesn`t go far past the carrier frequency, DX'ers can`t complain about it over and over :) (Paul Walker, PA, ibid.) With the way the NAB was pushing HD Radio years ago, I am surprised it took this long, from the early 90s when Bob Rusk was writing about it in RW. I doubt the station will have many listeners as who has an HD radio? Few do, even not a lot in auto radios. I find the Sony HD radios in thrift stores these days. I have two. Here on the OR coast I can hear KSL 1160 in HD off the Eastern Beverage at times. I presume once stations decide to go all digital, analog DXing will be a thing of the past. A few more FMs I get in HD as they seem to get out better (Patrick Martin, Seaside OR, KGED QSL Manager, ibid.) Per credible local reports, they started with the hybrid platform, although Scott's report seemed to indicate that they had experimental approval for testing full digital. As of yesterday they were in hybrid mode, and thus all hiss across 810-830. Therefore it's hard to draw conclusions. Perhaps Scott's interview will help (Russ Edmunds, 15 mi NW Phila, Grid FN20id, ibid.) Hi All: Sounds to me like if they want to ruin broadcast radio they're going about it the right way. That includes FM, where they're jamming so many signals on the air, even locals are hard to listen to while driving, especially if there's the least bit of skip. Granted, the airways are public and the public should have access, but why does a relatively small market, such as my nearby Parkersburg/Marietta market, (less than 100,000 people) need six local AMs and (at last count) 20 commercial and non-commercial FMs, not to mention a small TV station? 73 (David Faulkner, 5350 Shawnee Drive, Albany, Ohio 45710, ibid.) Russ, I agree with your prediction, but do want to play Devil`s Advocate. (Why the devil needs an advocate since his fan base is huge is beyond me, but I digress.) AM listenership within the DC market is high compared to most others. Traffic, news, and specialized political news formats dominate the market on both AM/FM. The metro area is very small geographically, and even with the reduced range, WWFD probably remains viable. HD radio remains in the majority of new cars (my wife`s 2018 Ford F- 150 came with one as standard equipment) and DC is one of the most mobile markets in the country. Most people are listening in their cars. And most people in DC are driving newer cars, and making the payments. If it will work anywhere, it will work in DC. All that being said, it`s doomed. 73, (Les Rayburn, N1LF, 121 Mayfair Park, Maylene, AL 35114, ibid.) Les, I think the point you miss here is that this station was a rimshot as an analog for the DC market and the HD signal won't hold in DC anyway (Russ Edmunds, WB2BJH, Blue Bell, PA, ibid.) Russ, Not at all. I get all that. My point is that if an all HD format on AM is viable economically anywhere in the US, then Washington, DC is that market. It`s highly affluent, highly mobile, and populated by an older than average, more educated than average audience. News format stations in the District still do very well. Unfortunately for Ibuitity [sic], ``physics don`t give a damn`` and the laws won`t change to fit their business model. IBOC HD doesn`t work technically. And the strong arm lobbying of the FCC to change the rules to fit it have only hastened the move to streaming audio services by millennials. 73, (Les Rayburn, N1LF, ibid.) Looking at their pattern WWFD's "local" coverage spans the I-270 corridor from Frederick to Germantown; inside the beltway would be "distant." I presume the digital signal will only be effective on that ~20 mile stretch of interstate and that they are targeting the morning and evening drive commuters as opposed to the city itself. Having made that drive many times, one can spend a lot of time in the car on that stretch (esp. in the evening). Now that I'm retired I avoid that route like the plague (Brett Saylor, PA, ibid.) I think, as a DX'er and broadcaster, HD would've been a bit more viable if you could've gotten HD locking without needing such robust signals and find a way to have it not interfere with other stations. I've heard HD on AM, I've heard DRM on Shortwave. I used to listen to Radio Kuwait 15540 kHz English DRM, and the thing needed a paint peeling banging barrel of brick signal to lock and stay locked. It sounds great, though. I don't particularly find any use for it on AM, except the sound quality. Where HD has --- I don`t wanna use the word flourished --- but done better, is on FM, and even more so TV, where you can offer sub/side channels. Many broadcasters, with pretty decent financial success have put translators on their HD channels (look at Saga communications) and offered formats that may not make financial sense on full powered signals. Where HD I think really works, is TV, with the multiple specialist channels. Anyways, I digress. I don't dislike HD as much as some here do, but I'm huge a fan of it in general. It has proved interesting while FM DXing, though (Paul Walker, PA, ibid.) Thanks to Tweet from @UlisK3LU, I learned that WWFD, 820 kHz, became the first all-digital AM station. This means they have eliminated their analog signal, devoting the entire segment from 815 to 825 kHz to its HD Radio digital signal https://news.radio-online.com/cgi-bin/rol.exe/headline_id=n35675 This annoyed me, because I enjoyed listening to the eclectic music selection on "The Gamut," even though the signal is marginal and noisy here in Arlington, Virginia. Wednesday morning, after dropping off my wife at the the Rosslyn Metro station, I tuned our 2017 VW Golf's radio to 820 AM. I wanted to hear what HD sounds like on an analog AM radio. I did hear the expected hash for a second or two. Then silence for a few seconds. Then the big sound of music filling the car. It turns out that the radio in my Golf does receive AM HD! (The radio is poorly documented in the manual.) I was also getting the names of the tunes and the artists, and the station ID, on the display. The sound was great, though definitely "digital." Maybe not as rich as a good FM analog signal. But infinitely better than the weak analog signal, with noise in the background, I was getting from 820. Great! Except as I drove west on Lee Highway, the signal dropped out. First for a few seconds. Then for several minutes, apparently because (looking later at a topo map) I was in the shadow of a ridge just north of Lee Highway. Finally, the signal came back. It seems to be good on my own block in Arlington. Later I learned that my Golf's radio has been switching to HD on FM as soon as an HD signal is detected. The Gamut also has a signal on one of the HD channels of WTOP news radio on 103.5 MHz, and that is very easy to hear in Arlington. The signal on 103.5 MHz has stereo, on 820 kHz not yet. Also, 820 kHz will be tough to hear in Arlington after sunset, while 103.5 MHz will sail on (Kim Elliott, July 18, WOR iog via DX LISTENNG DIGEST) This has been discussed extensively since Monday on the IRCA and ABDX lists. I`ll soon have that edited together for here. Are you saying all the time you weren`t really hearing 820 in HD, but instead their HD from VHF? (Glenn, ibid.) Not sure if I understand the question. I was hearing WWFD 820 kHz in analog up to a few days ago. On Wednesday I discovered I could hear them in HD "AM" on 820 kHz, in my car. Also on Wednesday I was informed by the WWFD engineer that I could also hear them also on a HD sub-channel of 103.5 MHz. That works well here in my car in Arlington VA. I had not listened to them on 103.5 MHz previously. On my car radio, reception of WWFD 820 kHz AM analog does not flip to 103.5 FM HD digital sub-channel, if that was your question. If that happened, it would be a very smart car radio (Kim, ibid.) Here's my reception of 820 in Harrisburg, PA about 80 miles from the Frederick transmitter. I was thinking maybe E07, as the website I referenced shows the following message format: [gets jumbled in copying – gh] Traffic format, single message: Intro Preamble Message Outro 845 845 845 1 728 26 75161 11770 ... 55934 25313 000 000 3-digit schedule ID Message count 3- or 4-digit group Group count 5-digit single groups Repeated for 2 minutes Repeated twice and 553, 553, 553, 1, 553, 553, 553, 1, etc. intro, then preamble twice (3308 43), and then the message numbers, are what I heard on Jorge's audio clip (Ron Howard, ibid.) Hi Ron, Thanks for this information, and now I'll keep an ear to this frequency and try to hear the same. Just possibly E07 is the one I hear in a digital format while Jorge has heard it in AM voice. 73 from (Noel Green, NW England, ibid.) ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ UNSOLICITED TESTIMONIALS ++++++++++++++++++++++++ ACKNOWLEDGED ON WORLD OF RADIO 1939: Thanks to Doug Brown, London, Ontario who sent a check in US funds on a US bank to Glenn Hauser, P O Box 1684, Enid OK 73702 PUBLICATIONS ++++++++++++ PDF A18 SEASON BROADCASTING SCHEDULES Sean Gilbert writes on the WRTH Facebook group, July 13 at 6:57 AM WRTH is pleased to announce a free pdf is available detailing updates to the A18 season broadcasting schedules covering both international and target/clandestine broadcasters. I`m afraid it had been disused for several years, a decade? once I had direct-entry digital portables. It`s a neat little radio, 4 x 3 by less than 1 inch. Seems heavier than expected. In a tight pouch where the dust accumulated, keeping the radio pristine. To my surprise it came right on, the 2xAA batteries still good, and not leaking, maybe originals? Maxell Alkaline Ace, ``no mercury/cadmium added``, dated 12-2004! I`m impressed with its sensitivity, if not the selectivity, using only the telescopic rod antenna which extends to only 14.5 inches. Reception depends a lot on its orientation, whether it`s being touched, or near metal objects. Tried clipping on the inside longwire, but not surprisingly causing overload. Tiny analog ``slide-rule`` dial is backwards, the highest frequencies of each band on the left. Thumb-tuning wheel is hard to move and land on exactly the center frequency. Also exhibits some drift? Besides FM and AM, six SW bands: 49, 41, 31, 25, 19 and 16m, mostly with a good overrun around the edges, but not quite enough now --- barely reaches WRNO but not WOOB WRMIs. Tiny speaker sounds tinny, better with hi-fi stereo headphones plugged in, not mere buds. Does receive stereo on FM only, visually indicated by a red light. Has a plastic belt clip, I would be very careful not to break, and the non-swiveling antenna is a drawback. Better put it in a breast pocket instead. I periodically tweet interesting new licenses for Experimental Radio Service stations on Twitter @experimradio. I keep a special lookout for HF stations in this service. While Bob Van Valzah provided detailed instructions on locating unusual stations of this type, it's worth restating that by licensee request, most of the data on these high-power HF stations is withheld from public disclosure. Such pertinent data could include the actual party in interest behind the shell companies that hold these licenses; their revenue plans if any, schedules and details of transmissions and the like. The Alpine NJ DRM station is a possible exception, but that station has not yet been built as Bob showed by site visit. For any experimental station, its location, licensee name, power level and related technical information remains available and is found in the license as a public record, along with any restrictions and conditions the FCC has placed on the license. These conditions can sometimes offer important clues to the experiment's nature. The regulatory and commercial future of these stations is unknown as they are licensed as limited-time scientific experiments. Only the operators and their legal counsel know what they told the FCC. No conventional radio service exists for international private and encrypted commercial data communications via shortwave, nor has the FCC allocated any HF spectrum for such purpose. Some HF spectrum is available under Part 90 of the FCC rules, but it is only for security and backup uses that do not apply here. A Petition for Rulemaking to authorize such stations on an operational, not experimental, basis would launch a public proceeding. This writer has long advocated for a sweeping re-examination of all the FCC rules covering private commercial shortwave facilities (Benn Kobb, DC, July 16, WORLD OF RADIO 1939, DX LISTENING DIGEST) HOW TELEVISION CAME TO THE MIDLANDS Hi All, I found this interesting film from the 1950s on Boobtube, it covers the construction of the Sutton Coldfield TV Transmitter and is worth a watch: There was also a film about relay systems, in particular 'British Relay' which I hadn't heard of, as this was a Rediffusion cabled area up until the 1980s (the Rediffusion system always 'bled through' around 6 MHz as I recall). This is also worth a watch as well: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ltI09lTuGjk Some nice shots of a couple of AR88 receivers in this film. (Alan Gale, UK, July 17, bdxc-news iog via DXLD) I enjoyed the film about TV coming to the Midlands. I remember Sylvia Peters, Mary Malcolm and MacDonald Hobley from when we had our first TV in December 1953. (17" Bush TV36, Band I only). TV was transmitted from Wenvoe to South Wales and the West from August 1952 onwards on Channel 5 (63-68 MHz) while Sutton Coldfield, sometimes receivable in South Somerset, used Channel 4 (58-63 MHz). Some of the engineers and technicians shown reminded me of people I worked with when I started with the Post Office Telephones in 1962, pipes and cigarettes much in evidence. The equipment shown was still typical of that still used in 1960s, but transistor equipment was installed in Yeovil Repeater Station in 1966 onwards. Regards, (Ian Brooks, Verwood, Dorset, ibid.) While there were plenty of strong multi-hop Sporadic-E signals on the 28 MHz and 50 MHz bands, the maximum usable frequency did reach as high as 88 MHz at one stage. Paul Logan in Lisnaskea, Fermanagh, Northern Ireland managed to catch CBC radio 1 on 88.5 MHz from Newfoundland, Canada at 22:35 local time (21:35 UTC). It is very rare for openings on Band 2 across the Atlantic and to date, only two people have managed to succeed in hearing North American radio stations. https://ei7gl.blogspot.com/2018/07/88-mhz-trans-atlantic-signals-heard-in.html John, EI7GL (via Mike Terry, WOR iog via DXLD) DOUBLE HOPE [sic] E-SKIP -- CALIFORNIA DREAMING This leads me to think about other goals for the hobby. One of the things I’m interested in is the possibility of receiving double-hop e- skip and logging a station from California. How often does this occur? While I’ve worked California and Oregon many times on 6 Meters, signals are generally weak on phone modes, even SSB. 73, (Les Rayburn, N1LF, ABDX via DXLD) But consider that the incidence of Es varies around the globe. My understanding is it's more intense in Asia than in North America (Doug Smith, TN, July 14, ibid.) Double hop can be very easy with water as your midpoint (or I guess I should say first endpoint). I had little problem with double hop listening from Korea. Most of my Es ended up in and around Taiwan as my endpoint and there’s a lot of water surrounding it. Eastern Malaysia gave me two FMs (parallel at that) and another event without any other stations noted gave me double hop loud and clear and stable to Thailand at more than 2,200 miles, though I was unaware it was Thailand as I was busy looking for other stuff and thought it was just some typical Chinese tropo til realizing later it wasn’t Chinese at all. When I went back to it, it was gone. In that case, the initial endpoint was a very rural area and the frequency of 88.75 was unique. It’s really all about location, water (or rural land) endpoints, and if there is anything at double hop distance across that water. And then of course, what stations you have locally and if your empty (emptier) frequencies match up with what lies within that distance. If all those things match up, you could get lucky with it. I had virtually no open frequencies at my location and still found some. The Buffalo and Rochester area guys get double hop to places like Colombia and there’s the water endpoint in the middle and no analogs within easy land distance between. In the case of California, Hawai’i is the best bet, but with analog [TV] being toast, the FM frequencies need to align well and with the band these days, good luck with that. Ha. The visible disk produced several plage regions but no visible spots were observed. No proton events were observed at geosynchronous orbit. The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit was at normal to moderate levels. Moderate levels were reached on 09-11 Jul and 13-17 Jul. Geomagnetic field activity was mostly quiet with several periods of unsettled observed on 11-12 Jul. A slow-moving transient signature was observed in the solar wind midday on 10 Jul from a CME first observed in STEREO AHEAD COR 2 imagery early on 05 Jul. A decrease in solar wind speeds was observed, after the onset, which lowered winds from near 385 km/s to 309 km/s at its slowest point on 11 Jul. Total magnetic field strength peaked at arrival with 13 nT. Bz was mostly oriented either near neutral or northward which produced a quiet to unsettled geomagnetic response throughout the duration of the transient. FORECAST OF SOLAR AND GEOMAGNETIC ACTIVITY 16 JULY - 11 AUGUST 2018 Solar activity is expected to remain very low throughout the outlook period. No proton events are expected at geosynchronous orbit. The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit is expected to range from moderate to high levels. Moderate to high level are expected over 21-31 Jul and normal to moderate levels are expected through the remainder of the outlook period. All enhancements in the greater than 2 MeV electron flux are due to the anticipated influence of multiple, recurrent CH HSSs. Geomagnetic field activity is expected to range from quiet to G1 (Minor) geomagnetic storm levels. Unsettled levels are expected on 16 Jul, 21 Jul and 24 Jul; active levels are expected on 20 Jul and 22 Jul; G1 (Minor) geomagnetic storm levels are expected on 23 Jul. All increases in geomagnetic activity are in anticipation of multiple, recurrent CH HSSs. :Product: 27-day Space Weather Outlook Table 27DO.txt :Issued: 2018 Jul 16 0150 UTC # Prepared by the US Dept. of Commerce, NOAA, Space Weather Prediction Center # Product description and SWPC contact on the Web # http://www.swpc.noaa.gov/wwire.html # # 27-day Space Weather Outlook Table # Issued 2018-07-16 # # UTC Radio Flux Planetary Largest # Date 10.7 cm A Index Kp Index 2018 Jul 16 72 8 3 2018 Jul 17 72 5 2 2018 Jul 18 72 5 2 2018 Jul 19 72 5 2 2018 Jul 20 72 16 4 2018 Jul 21 72 8 3 2018 Jul 22 72 10 4 2018 Jul 23 70 18 5 2018 Jul 24 68 8 3 2018 Jul 25 68 5 2 2018 Jul 26 68 5 2 2018 Jul 27 68 5 2 2018 Jul 28 68 5 2 2018 Jul 29 68 5 2 2018 Jul 30 68 5 2 2018 Jul 31 68 5 2 2018 Aug 01 68 5 2 2018 Aug 02 70 5 2 2018 Aug 03 72 5 2 2018 Aug 04 72 5 2 2018 Aug 05 72 5 2 2018 Aug 06 72 5 2 2018 Aug 07 72 5 2 2018 Aug 08 72 5 2 2018 Aug 09 72 5 2 2018 Aug 10 72 5 2 2018 Aug 11 72 5 2 (SWPC via WORLD OF RADIO 1939, DXLD) TIPS FOR RATIONAL LIVING ++++++++++++++++++++++++ CALCULATING SINPO and SIO SIGNAL REPORTS If any S, I, N, or P is 1, that drives the Overall Merit down to 1, not to be calculated as an average of the preceding.
