I contacted with the station via e-mail and in three hours here is the answer: "Estimado Manuel: Agradecerte por la comunicación y el seguimiento que haces a nuestra programación. Estamos con problemas en nuestro transmisor de OC; hasta el lunes tendremos solucionado y emisión en aire. Ruego hacerme conocer el estado de la señal. Un fuerte abrazo" They say they have problems with the short wave transmitter. I am looking for Radio Santa Cruz to be reactivated, as Manuel Méndez, Spain had reported to the WOR iog June 14 [as above]: But the frequency I have is more likely Rádio Aparecida, Brasil, which some time ago adjusted down from 6135.2 to 6134.9 as MM has also logged it recently; in an apparent attempt to zero-beat with its neighbor, trying but failing at least to eliminate an audible het if not the CCI. This foreign language station was received in the Cook Islands at 0751 UT on April 10th, about two hours after local sunset. Can anyone confirm the language as Portuguese (or Brazilian Portuguese)? If so the signal probably came from Brazil, since there is no other Portuguese possibility on the frequency in the South Pacific. Any comments would be appreciated, especially if anyone is familiar with the format of Radio Record in São Paulo https://dreamcrafts.box.com/s/wiuc8rlk3q1ylt6580kh2m016c8jblsg (Gary DeBock (in Puyallup, WA, USA), June 19, MWCircle yg via DXLD) Gary, yes, it is Brazilian Portuguese. Glad you were able to get South America without even trying! 73 (Glenn Hauser, ibid.) Thanks Glenn, Yes, the only puzzle was trying to figure out why Portuguese would show up in the South Pacific on "999 kHz" (where the Ultralight radio was tuned, for the recording). The Brazilian station was so strong that it slopped over from 1 kHz away, blanking out all the South Pacific stations on 999 kHz. There is a multicultural foreign language station in New Zealand on 999 kHz, and I thought it must be them :-) (Gary DeBock (in Puyallup, WA, USA), ibid.) Gary, It was Rádio Record, program "Manhã Record". 73 (Ivan Dias – Sorocaba/SP, http://youtube.com/regionaldx http://regionaldx.net June 19, ibid.) Pretty good jump! I appreciate your time and effort to help me identify the station. The station was my only South American reception in the Cook Islands, mainly because my wife wanted to do sightseeing and Polynesian dinners around sunset every evening :-) I'm sure that I could have had many more South American receptions if I had set up on the lagoon beach every day around sunset, and listened carefully for them. Once again the incompetent RadioCuba have let two transmitters run at the same time on the same frequency with different programming. RHC Spanish is supposed to stop 13740 at 1400. I had previously thought both were from same site, but now it`s totally unclear, researching conflicting info: Aoki/NDXC shows Quivicán for CRI but fails to list RHC at all on 13740. EiBi has Bejucal for RHC, but merely /CUB for CRI. EiBi key says /CUB means Quivicán (only). HFCC won`t be specific with HAB for CRI, and of course, RHC itself refuses to participate for fear of having to negotiate with yanquis. DXLD 18-15 had various versions of A-18 schedules, one showing Bejucal for RHC until 1400. And another from Ivo claiming 13740 is RHC Bauta but until 1500. WRTH A-18 Update has 13740 RHC until 1400 from Bejucal, but does not specify any frequency as Bauta, instead many others as HAB which apparently means to them Bauta, as opposed to any of the three sites. So this must mean that CRI at 1400 from HAB also means Bauta in particular. The WRTH book key to sites on page 660 indeed says HAB = Bauta (only). So the situation here is clear as mud. It`s incredible that a major SW transmission provider, MBR/TDF, would keep running such a severely defective transmitter. Note that in Indonesia (June 13), it was the cuti bersama holiday and on the 14th, is Idul Fitri Day 1 (Eid-al-Fitr [end of Ramadan]). https://www.timeanddate.com/holidays/indonesia/joint-holiday-before-idul-fitri https://www.timeanddate.com/holidays/indonesia/idul-fitri (Ron Howard, WOR iog via DXLD) Yes, the VoI website is extremely confusing. I will not be able to hear them that late in the day here (when Ron heard the English broadcast) at this time of year. [non] This morning I did hear Radio Bougainville at 1056 UT with Indonesia underneath. It was quite light out by then here. From 1030 to 1130 UT this morning June 13th I monitored 3325 Radio Bougainville, 3260 Radio Madang, 4835 Ozy Radio, and 5055 4KZ all with fair to good signals. 73 (Mick Delmage, AB, June 13, ibid.) VOI used to have another English hour at 10-11 on 9526v (gh, DXLD) 3325, "Voice of Indonesia" via RRI Palangkaraya, on June 17. Started close to 1024; in English; 1124 noted in Chinese; 1223 in Japanese; 1300 VOI intro in English, saying something like - You can listen to our broadcast on 9525 kilohertz"; gave just the one frequency, so no longer the "15150, 9525, 11785" frequencies given; 1316 segment "Today In History"; not very readable. Approximate language schedule per - http://radio.chobi.net/DX/bbs/?res:133#3309 : *0950-1000 (English) ?? 1000-1100 (English) ?? [noted starting past 1000 and yes, in English - Ron] 1100-1200 Chinese 1200-1300 Japanese 1300-1400 English 1400-1500 Indonesian 1500-1600 (Dutch) ?? 1600-1700 Arabic 1700-1800 Spanish 1800-1900 German 1900-2000 (English) 2000-2100* (French) Now that VOI seems to be staying on 3325 kHz for a while, would be interesting to know if they still broadcast the "Exotic Indonesia" programs, during some weekdays, during the English language segments. In past years Glenn and I often enjoyed hearing these joint programs of VOI-Jakarta and different regional stations ("RRI Banjarmasin, South Kalimantan," or "97.2 FM Pro 2 RRI Bukittinggi, West Sumatra" or "100.9 Paradise FM, RRI Denpasar," or "88.5 FM world wide RRI Samarinda, East Kalimantan") (Ron Howard, Asilomar State Beach, CA, Etón E1, antenna: 100' long wire, WOR iog via WORLD OF RADIO 1935, DXLD) 3325, Pro 1 RRI Palangkaraya, on June 14, a second day of VOI language programs; not as readable as yesterday; 1221-1258 in Japanese; 1258- 1300 dead air (no audio), so not the usual closing announcements in Japanese; 1300+ in English; intro and VOI news; not readable at all today. At my QTH, am unable to tell what is happening here before 1200, nor after 1400. Glad to find yesterday's VOI reception was not a one day only anomaly! (Ron Howard, Asilomar State Beach, CA, Etón E1, antenna: 100' long wire, WOR iog via WORLD OF RADIO 1935, DXLD) Hi Glenn, Since alerting Amano-san (Saitama, Japan) of the new developments on 3325 kHz, he has noted the following: June 14: 1600 - VOI Chinese ended - VOI Arabic started. 1700 - VOI Arabic ended - VOI Spanish started. 1800 - VOI Spanish ended - VOI German started. After that VOI continued to broadcast on 3325 kHz, changing the language every hour. Amano-san continued to hear VOI until 2015+. Very much appreciate his excellent feedback, via the Japanese language side of the website "Now On The Radio" - http://radio.chobi.net/bbsasia/#4332 which also contains brief audio clips of his receptions. So, are there no longer any RRI Palangkaraya programs on 3325 kHz? Is it now 100% "Voice of Indonesia"? (Ron Howard, WOR iog via WORLD OF RADIO 1935, DX LISTENING DIGEST) "Voice of Indonesia" via RRI Palangkaraya, on June 15, on 3325 kHz, suddenly cut off at 1225* and didn't return thru tuned away at 1235. 1121-1200 noted in Chinese. June 15 - Should have also reported that there was no NBC Bougainville (3325) broadcasting today 1059+. On June 16, "Voice of Indonesia," via RRI Palangkaraya, on 3325 kHz, started sometime between 1030-1045, in English; at 1101 switched to Chinese till that ended at 1155; from 1155 till past 1308+, was only hearing dead air (decent strength carrier, with no hint of any audio). Would seem there was an interruption with whatever means they use to get the audio feed from Jakarta. Yet another day with no trace at all of NBC Bougainville (3325 kHz), which would normally be considerably stronger than Indonesia (Ron Howard, California, ibid.) 3325, "Voice of Indonesia" via RRI Palangkaraya, on June 18, at 1300. Start of segment in English; unlike yesterdays announcement for just "9525," today sound like only "15150" was given; whereas several Japanese DXers have been hearing all three former frequencies (9525, 15150, and 11785) being given for other language segments, but clearly not yet announcing 3325 (Ron Howard, Asilomar State Beach, CA, Etón E1, antenna: 100' long wire, WOR iog via WORLD OF RADIO 1935, DXLD) ** IRELAND [non]. 3995.00, 0130-0135 15.6, GERMANY, LifeFM, Ireland, via HCJB, Weenermoor. Full article: http://www.mayonews.ie/features/32199-shortwave-radio-and-the-letter-from-north-korea (via Mike Barraclough, June 14, WOR iog via DXLD) Here are some extracts: “I am writing this letter to tell you we are tired of repeating the same programs all the year round. We may deal with fresh information when we air the news about foreign countries, but when we are told to air radio commentaries we in most cases try to search similar programs we had once aired previously. “This is the safest way to be faithful to our duty because we are told to quote some phrases from the remarks of our Great Leader Kim II Sung or Dear Leader Kim Jong II whenever we draft the manuscript of the commentaries. This is why we have been repeating the same tones for years. “No freedom of speech nor of association exists in my country. You will never notice any dark side of our society when you listen to our radio programs. “The reality of my country is that the people, especially those living outside of Pyongyang are suffering from the severe shortages of food and daily commodities. They are urged to engage in the campaign to take two meals, instead of three meals, a day. “I don’t think our closed-door policy will last forever, and sometime, in the future and all of a sudden the people will rise up against the government. I think now is the time for the intellectuals to come to the rescue of our fatherland”. RAYMIE`S MEXICO BEAT this week --- [including DTV = TDT] On May 23, the IFT cleared an MX group out of the 2016 PABF in Colima. Fundación Educacional de Medios won the station over a bid from two people not in a company. The bid from the personas físicas was not chosen because the two people worked for XHMZO-FM in Manzanillo. FEM's station count now ascends to three, having already picked up stations at Cópala in Jalisco and Atlacomulco in the State of Mexico. There is still no information on the principals behind FEM, which also has applications on file for stations in Manzanillo and Morelia (Raymie Humbert, Phœnix AZ, June 15, WTFDA Forum via DXLD) It's still uncertain if one of Guaymas's three IFT-4 stations is on the air. But XHPGYM-FM began program production this week with a morning newscast currently airing 8 MHz up the dial. XHFX-FM Amor 101.3 began carrying the new Noticias en Red morning newscast on Monday. It's hosted by Karla Montaño, formerly of XHBQ-FM "FM105". What's unusual is that XHPGYM and XHFX are not commonly owned. Mario Astiazarán (ASVA Comunicaciones) runs XHFX, while the Lemmen Meyer family is behind Sonora Emedios, the concessionaire for XHPGYM. It's worth noting that, like many things in Mexican broadcasting, Mario Astiazarán is just one degree of separation from politics. His brother Antonio "Toño" (not to be confused with the Larsa radio stations!) is a two-time federal deputy, former municipal president of Guaymas and current Por México al Frente senatorial candidate. The Expreso newspaper, organized as Medios y Editorial de Sonora, owns the other two IFT-4 stations for Guaymas, XHPUAY-FM 90.9 and XHPMAS-FM 100.5 (Raymie, June 17, ibid.) After first being caught testing in March, XHJM-FM 88.1 hit the air today, and—surprise! U-ERRE Radio didn't make the leap to FM! Two years ago, ownership of Radio Contenidos, S.A. de C.V., was transferred to the Universidad Regiomontana, a private university, making XEJM-AM 1450 Mexico's only commercial-concession university station. Last week, however, U-ERRE Radio's programs announced that they would not continue on AM, and indeed as of today they are an online-only station. When reached for comment, U-ERRE Radio stated that "the frequency is no longer ours" and did not have information on the new operator. The new operator is not hitting the ground running. The new station appears to be running automated music interspersed with IDs that merely say "88.1, próximamente". There is one unconfirmed report that MVS is the new operator, which raises the question as to what XHJM will eventually broadcast full-time. Edit: The Mexico Beat has confirmed that MVS Radio will operate the new 88.1 in Monterrey. It is the first time that MVS has operated more than two stations in Monterrey, the city where it launched Stereorey on 92.5 XHSRO fifty years ago. It will also be the first HD station operated by MVS. Last edited by Raymie; 06-20-2018 at 11:12 AM. Around 7:10 a.m. on Tuesday, officials with the Oklahoma Highway Patrol learned a crop dusting plane had crashed near Hwy 45 and Garland Rd., about a mile north of Enid. Officials said the plane, which was owned by Deterding Aerial Spraying, crashed into the ground after it hit a guideline [sic] wire. OHP confirmed to KFOR that the pilot of the plane was the only occupant and he died in the crash. The pilot has since been identified as 52-year-old Rodney Sherry from Olton, Texas. Pete Buss and his brother, Mitchell Buss, were nearby building a house when the incident happened. "He was in really bad shape. I didn't think there was much we could do for him. We couldn't get him out. We didn't have the equipment to get him out of the cockpit or anything," Pete said. "When he hit the cable, I guess it released his bug spray or whatever. There was a big cloud and then, when he hit the ground, there was a big ball of dust." Even those who did not know Sherry are shaken by his loss. "Kind of makes you think about who you care about. Let them know. We're not here forever," Mitchell said. "I've lost family members in tragic situations and just, hang on to God and believe He's there for you," Pete said. This is the second fatal crop duster crash within the past month. The accident is now being investigated by state and federal agencies. The plane went down in a field near Highway 45 and Garland Road. State troopers say Rodney Sherry, 52, was flying over the field around 7:10 a.m. when he clipped the top of a radio tower, in a tragically similar fashion to a plane crash just last month. http://www.news9.com/story/38321425/pilot-remembered-by-family-as-crash-investigation-continues Sherry, a Texas native, had been working for Deterding Aerial Spraying out of Pond Creek, Oklahoma. The owner of the plane is Jim Deterding, whose brother Andrew Deterding was piloting a crop duster for another company when he was killed after striking a radio tower at the end of May. "It is a tragic situation and our hearts go out for that company and the families," said OHP Trooper Darrin Lancaster. The Department of Agriculture is now working to make sure there is no lasting contamination from the chemicals the plane was carrying, as the FAA and NTSB try to piece together what led to Sherry striking the tower and its guywires. Troopers say safety measures were in place, however. "From my understanding, there was a flashing light at the very top," said Lancaster, "and of course it’s not there now due to the accident and part of the tower that’s been taken down." The radio tower, owned by American Tower, is not a new installation, but neighbors do report a number of new smaller mesonet towers going up recently. Troopers urge low-flying pilots to use caution to avoid another tragedy. "We’ve always got to be aware of what we’re doing and be as careful as we can be," Lancaster said. The Deterdings are asking for the public’s prayers during this difficult time, but are not yet ready to provide additional comment (via gh, DXLD) I quickly FM bandscan that morning but do not find any local signals, including translators or LPFM, missing; other than the ones already off the air, 92.1 and 93.1. Even if one cannot see the guy! wires, one should know they have to be there near a radio tower. Another report I saw somewhere said the pilot was nicknamed ``hot-shot``. Around midday June 20 we drove out to the area around State Hwy 45 and Garland Road, but could not find the crash scene in any direxion from there, let alone the stub of a radio tower. HISTORY OF DX AND RADIO ==================== RADIOPIRATES. Many claim that creating a pirate radio is much more interesting than listening to it. However, many will not delay with a refutation that listening to them is also a considerable pleasure. Is not it a miracle? Looking for the ether, and suddenly from the short-wave polyphony burst, for example, "I'm Frankenstein" or "Radio Rambo". Listen to pirates the law does not prohibit - this is quite a legal occupation. Another thing is to broadcast without a license. But however, who knows: today's pirate can get a license tomorrow ... WE HAVE. It all began in the late 1950s. Then suddenly it turned out that to increase the yield of corn in the fields, it is necessary to take one of their ranges from the Soviet shortwave band. Namely, the range is "160 meters". The range was transferred to the Ministry of Agriculture, and radio amateurs were invited to re-register and leave the band. Many have done so. But some of them either could not (for various reasons) or perceive such arbitrariness, almost as a personal insult. These guys decided to stay on the band. They changed their official callsigns, more like numbers (like RA4AB), to "humanized" call-names. For example: "Serpentine", "Resonance", "Luck", etc. The air began to sound - To all Free Operators! I'm "Jolly Roger". Who hears - answer. Everything, have arrived! Expressed "high calm", we can say that the Radio Pirate flag has proudly risen over the country of the Builders of Communism! Agricultural communication has a problem: interference from radio transmitters of former owners of the range, who are "outlawed". In 1957, under the Ministry of Communications, a special ether control service was set up, these were small departments of 2-4 people in the regional communications departments. Further, this service was called the State Telecommunications Inspection (GIE). The cleaning of the band began. Direction finder "NDP" - (Illegally Acting Transmitters) has been developed direction finders specially designed for this purpose. For the "radio destroyer", it usually ended up with confiscation of radio equipment and a fine. But there were also cases of criminal prosecution. The radio pirates (for safety reasons) had to switch to the Mid-Wave range. Fortunately the middle waves closely adjoin to "agricultural", or technically competently - "intermediate". Now Free Operators could be heard on an ordinary household receiver. The next stage has begun. It is interesting from where went the favorite scheme of radio- bullies, which at that time became a classical radio-bully "barrel organ" - a transmitting attachment to a conventional tube receiver, which makes it possible to turn it into a receiving and transmitting medium-wave radio station. The scheme is so simple that even a fifth grader can do it. And they did! Young children and schoolchildren actively joined the movement, for whom this very "barrel organ" became the first self-assembled structure. Their enthusiasm is quite understandable. Published at the time (and now) books for novice radio amateurs suggested starting with the assembly of the detector receiver or at best a direct amplification receiver. Few people it can seriously interest, especially if the house already has a modern (for those times) radiolocation. And then immediately radio station! Such anywhere you will not buy, it already INTERESTING! Until now, in some provincial cities of Russia, the medium-wave range of 170-200 m "buzzes" even in the daytime when there is no long- distance passage. "Sharmanka" as 40 years ago remains a means of communication where there is neither the Internet nor the phone, and the casual earnings per week is 200-300 rubles. Radio-bully players are divided into two categories: "truckers" - having powerful transmitters, more interested in conducting long- distance communications (thousands of kilometers), and "organ- grinders" - with a range of action within their settlement. We will continue to call "truckers" and "organ-grinders" this way, although in other regions there were other terms - definitions. The main activity of organ-grinders was "to drive music". This activity, I must say, was in demand by society! It's no secret that Soviet radio broadcasting did not particularly indulge listeners with a variety of repertoire. Tape recorders, all the more - portable, in short supply. And here some "Commissar" or "Smoke" broadcasts the novelties of the Western stage, the semi-forbidden Vysotsky, and so on. It was possible to take a simple "transistor" and rest in the nature under modern music. The authorities, naturally, fought with radium-hooliganism as best they could. Illegal manufacture and use of transmitters was qualified under Article 206 of the RSFSR Criminal Code (hooliganism) - from a fine of 50 rubles. up to 1.5 years. Actually, therefore, with the light hand of some journalist, a neologism "radio bully" arose, and not because Free Operators indecently behaved on the air! Even posters with calls to "surrender" radio hooligans were hung up, but public opinion, thanks to "sharman" music, was on their side. Repressive measures clearly did not bring results. Free operators were caught, but they bred like mushrooms after the rain. Many after the first "voyage" resumed their activities. "Sharman", gaining experience, switched to "truckers", and they were replaced by new ones. If the musical repertoire only changed in the "shamanic ether" over the years and "staff rotation" took place, then the "truckers" had development. They left the Mid-Wave range backwards, to the "intermediate" ones. In the 70s, when the rapid development of the national economy began in the range of 33-57 and 150-170 MHz, the radio-hooligans-truckers thoroughly got used to their range. The power of the transmitters was increased. In response to the traditional wish - "kilowatt to the antenna!" You could easily hear: - "Yes, I already have more than a kilowatt!". What then were the radio conversations? Yes, almost everything! On the radio frequency range, one could hear a conversation on an abstract topic with the fascinating story "How I got drunk yesterday", anecdotes of varying degrees of decency, etc. Only politicians escaped - time was like that. There was not enough to get under anti-Soviet! But more often still talked about equipment, antennas, conducted long- distance radio communications (within the Union), competed - whose transmitter is more powerful and more qualitative. Gradually, among the radio operators of the pirate band, the policy of cultural radio exchange without a mate on the air began to take root, the topic became almost the same as for legal radio amateurs, (i.e., basically about equipment), but the spirit of freedom and free ether remained. Oddly enough, the state itself. As before, it was required to collect a lot of papers, references and characteristics from the place of work, autobiographies, to enter DOSAAF, etc., in order to design the KV call sign. (7490), UT Sat June 16 from 0000, I monitor the first semihour of `Allan Weiner Worldwide`, on webcast. Notes from his monolog: quadri-casting again tonight, 7490, 9330, 5130 and experimentally on 3265. 3265 is on aux transmitter as main one is down while the plenum is being redesigned. Very old fibreglass in the plenum becomes explosive, as they learned when previous transmitters burned up. Replacement transmitter is in place but not ready for use yet. 3265 is #5 transmitter. The super-station 500 kW transmitter: looks like it will be a year from now before it is on air; due to various delays by vendors, etc., and cost overruns. (Despite detailed 24/7 language schedule on 9330 already publicized effective S-18 in September.) It`s designated #6 transmitter, for World`s Last Chance ministry; much like The Overcomer. #6 will be ``pretty much exclusive`` for them but also some time for other WBCQ programs. 250 WLC programs are already in the can, good stuff, hi-quality bible teaching in multiple languages. Allan emphasizes that he wants the 500 kW to be available to the US government in case of national emergency. As Dr Becker says, ``no guerrilla engineering`` on this one; everything is being done professionally, by the book. There are other 500 kW SW in USA, but at reduced power, and to fixed antennas. This will be the only rotatable antenna in USA, capable of aiming anywhere in the world. W.L.C. is paying for it, but will be owned and licensed to Allan. WBCQ is one of the most X-rated broadcast stations in the world, e.g. Johnny Lightning, but AW likes it that way in service of Free Speech. Asks someone off mike what the 9 pm (0100 UT) special on 5130 is? Haiko(??) Music from Germany. Must be sure to switch programming on that frequency when the time comes. FM translator of the AM 780 will be on 98.3 with 200 watts, on 400 foot tower. At 0030 he starts praising Trump and Jesus, so on to other things here; recheck webcast at 0118, he`s still going, advocating legal pot, but finished before 0130 when Blalock is Blasting. Now to John H Carver, Jr., for his version: ``Show started on time this evening. Listening on 7490. Again they're broadcasting on 7490, 5130, 9330 and 3265. 5130 will be leaving AWWW at 9:00 for a new European music program. 3265 is on its backup transmitter this evening as there are still some problems with the plenum on the original transmitter. They've been doing general work this week on the other transmitters. Replacing tubes, tightening bolts etc. The WRUL transmitter from WRMI is in place in the transmitter [space] but still needs a total rebuild and Allan and Tim will be working on that as time permits. Allan mentioned that there may be room on the super station for other WBCQ programs but not completely sure about that. He stated again that the government could have access to the super station in case of natural disaster or national security. Allan, Angela and Robert in the studio this evening. Robert is there for the changeover of 5130 at nine. Some talk of wanting to get President Trump up to the station for the dedication of the super station but Allan admitted that it was very unlikely. Also some comments about new programmers calling to inquire about rates and such including a man that wants to do a business oriented program. Then Allan stated he would have control over what was broadcast over the new super station and that the flat earthers would be paying a fee to broadcast over WBCQ. Strange statement out of left field. [I don`t think AW himself refers to his benefactors as flat-earthers – gh] Talk again about AM and FM radio continuing the discussion from last week and this theme would pop up throughout the rest of the show. Also talk about a four hour visit by two old radio engineers this week and how Allan gave them the tour of the facilities, both old and new. Allan also stated that if the electric bill didn't stop increasing he might be forced to shut some transmitters off. Confusing based upon his earlier statement about the flat earthers paying a fee to broadcast. This writer was under the impression that the new client would be paying the power bill for the super station. Rapidly changing gears, the talk turned to all the gardens that Angela had been installing around the station, mostly flower gardens. Reading of emails at 0057. Also some highlights from the Free Radio Weekly. Dave from Indiana on the phone at 0102 talking about the drug problem and vets not being able to get the pain killers they needed because of this which prompted Allan to restate his position of legalizing all drugs. Another phone call at 0110 from a man in the drug business continuing the discussion of this problem. After the closing prayer show was off the air at 0123. Almost like the old days of AWWW. John Mid-North Indiana`` (Glenn Hauser, OK, WORLD OF RADIO 1935, DX LISTENING DIGEST) Hi Glenn, Reading your logs under USA - WBCQ - I noted mention of ``Asks someone off mike what the 9 pm (0100 UT) special on 5130 is? Haiko(??) Music from Germany. Must be sure to switch programming on that frequency when the time comes`` I noted on 16 June 2018 from 0139 to 0158 UTC on WBCQ 5130 kHz a program of music by a German announcer. He played pop hits from the 1960's, including "Silence Is Golden," "End of the World," "This Guy's In Love." ID'd at 0151 and 0154 UTC, was able to catch partial e-mail address: Radioprsparty...de." Note: These ITU codes do not have a category for COFDM modulation, X being none of the above is most appropriate so I don't know why they have specified phase modulation. The licence also is wrong in that for DRM all data is combined in the content server prior to OFDM modulation. There is are pairs of OFDM modulators one for audio and the other for data. The codes above give the opportunity to transmit digital signals or ordinary AM signals (St John, ibid.) af4mp Jun 11 10:44 AM Could data, such as MSK-32 and transmitted over one sideband channel be construed as AM? (-Zyg-) rumcd Jun 11 11:11 AM If you sent it with a carrier and one sideband, yes. Since the signal in simulcast is normally AM, you could send any SWRadiogram type mode there. Likely, you could also send them in SSB with no carrier there too. I'd have to check the specifications. MFSK32 is really quite narrow! (-fib) af4mp Jun 11 11:58 AM Yes, that is what I was thinking. To make it "acceptable" for DRM simulcast purposes they could just run a 5 kHz wide SSB signal and modulate it with some special data format (I used MSK32 as an example). Since the WINB transmission is in a broadcast band, do they need to let the public know what type of data protocol they are using? I would think that if it is financial arbitrage stuff then whoever is sending the information would not want anyone but a select few to decode it. This information, by its definition, would require encryption. Is encrypted info allowed to be broadcast on a public use band, let alone an international broadcasting one? By the way Part II from the blog you mentioned is now available at: https://sniperinmahwah.wordpress.com/2018/06/07/shortwave-trading-part-ii-faq-and-other-chicago-area-sites/ (-Zyg-) You can think SSB, but their licence does not allow it. The licence only allows phase modulation or double sideband full carrier modulation (AM). The ITU codes do not have one for COFDM used by DRM, so you would have to codify it as none of the above. So SW radiogram fax is a possibility. (St John) af4mp Jun 12 7:57 AM I just posted a couple of pictures displaying the Spectrum of the WINB datacasting signal on the DRM RX Forum. It appears that there is a definite AM carrier spike in the center of the datacast signal indicating that it may well be a standard AM (DSB plus carrier) signal. This is then modulated with an, as yet, unknown data mode (-Zyg-) af4mp Jun 12 8:12 AM The recent news about all this shortwave Latency Arbitrage stuff got me thinking about the proposed 500 KW transmitter and rotatable antenna at WBCQ. The coverage is for a receiver using only a 6 foot whip antenna. Higher gain antennas may produce better results. [VOACAP map] The WINB Rhombic antenna parameters are taken from the HFCC files. Although the transmitter has been stated as "being rated for 15 kW", I'm using a conservative estimate of 10 kW DRM power for the plot. From SWL reports the transmitted bit rate has been monitored as being 8.28 kbps, which should help it to be decoded at lower signal levels. A report in the DRM RX forum indicated that the signal was relatively strong in Newfoundland at this time but with deep fading and then disappeared some minutes later. This agrees with the plot which shows the listeners location just on the edge of stronger signal coverage. The propagation does move the stronger signal area eastwards as time progresses. There were also reports from the UK and France at a little earlier time when the signal would have been at a somewhat higher level in those areas before moving eastwards. On Friday, I monitored the KiwiSDR web network of receivers at 1600z and found 15670 kHz DRM "waterfall" signals in Houston, Miami (stronger), and Iceland (weak). I did not encounter any DRM signals in Europe at that time, but Radio France International has a 500 kW broadcast from Issoudun, France, beaming south to Africa on the same frequency and at the same time! There was also a much weaker, but still noticeable, signal in the Atlanta area (as received on my Kenwood R-1000 receiver and a long wire antenna). The plot only shows signals that are stronger than S6 (on an S-meter). Finally this coverage is for "normal" propagation conditions which just happen to have a zero solar sunspot number as we are in the bottom of the 11 year solar cycle. Conditions have been less than normal in the past few days. 73, (-Zyg Posted by us at 8:27 PM) Sunday, June 10, 2018 WINB - further details on their DRM broadcasting http://drmnainfo.blogspot.com/2018/06/winb-further-details-on-their-drm.html Here is info from the April WINB FCC Construction/Change application. You will see they are using a data amplifier from Amplifier Systems Inc. I don't actually see the quoted model on the ASI website, but I emailed them for more details. It appears that WINB is planning datacasting (in addition to DRM audio and its associated text). [repro of FCC info] They are currently testing using 5 kHz DRM, so the left half of the 10 kHz channel appears to be the datacasting. Zyg has some ideas that he posted over on DRMRX. http://www.drmrx.org/forum/showthread.php?t=2800&page=3 Here is an evaluation screen of WINB reception last Friday. See the spiky section on the left half of the 10 kHz channel? It looks wrong for a DRM waveform, but it is likely the datacasting stream - hence the 5 kHz DRM to the right side. Sign-on time keeps shifting according to quantity of program bookings, and WINB does amazingly well with such a crummy signal. Most of their clients probably never try to hear themselves, proceeding on Faith. Surely WINB does not falsify listener response like a certain religious SW program broker used to do. Also, I have been wondering if anyone has heard the alleged DRM tests from WINB, M-F 11-17 on 15665-15670-15675? Nothing obvious about it on WINB homepage. There is some discussion of that in the drmna yg, and drmnainfo.blogspot, but not about the programming (and nothing scheduled on 9265 that early weekdays), rather about part of the DRM signal apparently being encrypted data. OUR MONSTER ISLAND OF MEDIA COMPANIES By Sam Thielman, CJR June 13, 2018 877 words You’ve never heard of him, but judge Richard J. Leon, first appointed to Washington DC’s district court by George W. Bush in 2002, is now among the most important figures in the history of American communications. In 2011, he created the media world’s version of Godzilla by approving the acquisition of NBCUniversal by Comcast, the largest provider of cable and internet service in the country, under conditions imposed by the Department of Justice’s antitrust division. Yesterday, he created Mothra. Leon’s approval of cable, phone, and internet company AT&T’s purchase of Time Warner, a media giant that has had many suitors over the years, is all the things you’d expect from vertical media consolidation: It’s likely bad for newcomers to film, TV, cable distribution, cell phones, and sundry other businesses the two companies have devoured over the years. It’s almost certain to result in a period during which executives at the combined company scour their middle ranks for “inefficiencies” in an effort to run a megabusiness that is bigger than the previous two combined, but with fewer salaried employees. And in an immediate fallout from the approved AT&T deal, Comcast on Wednesday offered $65 billion to buy 21st Century Fox, kicking off a bidding war with Disney. . . https://www.cjr.org/business_of_news/att-time-warner.php (via Blaine Thompson, Indiana Radio Watch via John Carver, DXLD) ** U S A. $2 million fines for illegal stations? The House gets serious about the PIRATE Act. There’s a markup (and vote) for the legislation at this morning’s Communications Subcommittee hearing, and the numbers for the “pirate radio enforcement enhancements” are eye-popping – a fine as steep at $2 million. That would be applicable to anyone who “willfully and knowingly does or causes or suffers to be done any pirate radio broadcasting.” Same for anyone who “intentionally facilitates” it – i.e., property owners. The daily fines could run as high as $100,000. The latest version of the bill retains the idea of “biannual sweeps.” The FCC would have to conduct those “within the top five radio markets identified as prevalent for such broadcasts.” (Okay – South Florida, New York-North Jersey and Boston are three…) The mission there would be “identifying, locating and terminating such operations, and seizing related equipment.” The act specifically pertains to the AM band (535 to 1705 kHz) and the FM band (87.7 MHz to 108 MHz). Reps. Leonard Lance (D-NJ) and Paul Tonko (D-NY) have carried the weight on this one. The name of the bill – The PIRATE Act – is an acronym for “Preventing Illegal Radio Abuse Through Enforcement Act.” (Somebody stayed up late working on that one.) The bill is H.R. 5709, and you can see its brief five-page text here. But if it passes the full House and then the Senate and is signed into law – will pirates get the word? After June 23, when "Hot Jazz" sadly leaves the air, WAMU's schedule, other than Kojo Nnamdi and the Big Broadcast, will be made up of syndicated shows that can be heard without listening to WAMU. That does not signify a valuable, imaginative schedule. It shows a lack of faith in listeners to appreciate diverse programming. Sure, the news programs may be more popular than "Hot Jazz Saturday Night." So? I'm sure McDonald's sells more meals than, say, Jaleo, but does that mean McDonald's has better food? Is popularity the goal of public radio? I wasn't particularly interested in jazz until I happened onto "Hot Jazz" one Saturday in about 1990, when my wife and I were driving back from Skyline Drive. Host Rob Bamberger was featuring great saxophonist and arranger Benny Carter on that night's show. We were captivated and have rarely missed a show since. Thanks very much to Bill Bingham (RSA) for this input: ". . . seems unlikely to be TWR from Eswatini. Over a decade of “HD” and it hasn’t gained traction. Mostly what it’s done is create interference. Most of the programming (with a few exceptions) is computer-in-a-closet radio. Some stations have used HD as an excuse to put on translators—a loophole that shouldn’t be allowed. What a travesty! Here in Seattle 42 frequencies are covered with “HD” hiss, so that 21 stations can broadcast in a mode that few people care about. Some of those frequencies would have audible signals without this FCC-approved garbage. The emperor has no clothes. HD isn’t needed, especially when it’s so easy to set up online streams — and they don’t produce interference. -- (Rick Lewis, ibid.) Now they are talking about 600 kHz of bandwidth instead of "just" 400 kHz, so they can add more digital channels. Extra channels nobody cares about, because the station gets no calls when HD-2, etc go down. Hence the computer in the closet. It goes down for two months - who cares? HD-2's can't really be monetized anyway. A few local stations sell commercials, but when you hear the commercials - it is for government and bargain basement type of buyers - the same sort of people who underwrite LPFM and NPR. They pay little, and expect little in return. A good example is the local DA advertizing jury duty - "see you at the court house". The library advertised that they had the entire John Carter book series - not realizing that the John Carter movie flopped instead of being the next big franchise. Then there is the smoky bear commercial, the electric company talking about power lines, the animal shelter advertising about adopting from a shelter instead of buying. NO national campaigns for cars, insurance, fast food, etc. Not even local ads for local businesses. So - yeah - not really monetized. Several HD-2, etc., are feeding translators on other frequencies for AM stations, Every format is one that is supposedly unpopular with advertisers - classical, smooth jazz, oldies. In other words, it is on HD-2 to shut up the people that like those formats and complain they aren't served. So - why would we turn around and let stations have 15 sub channels when they cannot monetize the ones they got? They claim 64 miles, but what I have found in drive tests is that you can get such range, but with dropouts lasting a few agonizing seconds. The radio is playing a song - then it goes completely silent for several seconds, then it comes back. And those dropouts become less frequent further in, but still happen. Listeners will hit the next preset on their radio the FIRST time the subchannel drops, and probably won't be back! So - once again, the HD shills are completely out in fantasy land, completely out of touch with reality. They won't stop until they have converted both bands to all digital, and radio has NO listeners left except for digital fanatics that will adopt the technology no matter what. Oh - and that brand new KIA SUV I rented while my car was in the shop? No HD at all - everything else but no HD. My sister in law's new 2018 car from a few months back? No HD. Everything else, just missing HD. Auto makers have given up, it would seem. I haven't had HD radio in a rental in a couple of years. Ford, Chevy, Chrysler, etc. I always need SUV for a car seat, and I get a nice model. No HD in anything (Bruce Carter, TX, ibid.) Rick, Some people called AM Stereo a debacle. AM Stereo may have failed but at least it was not destructive as IBOC HD (Kevin Redding, Crump, TN, ibid.) RADIO EQUIPMENT FORUM +++++++++++++++++++++ AI GIVES SILENCED RADIO JOURNALIST HIS VOICE BACK By Mary-Ann Russon Technology reporter, BBC News 15 June 2018 https://www.bbc.com/news/technology-44481510 Image copyright Jamie Dupree Image caption Radio journalist Jamie Dupree will be able to broadcast again thanks to artificial intelligence A US radio journalist who lost his voice two years ago will soon return to the air, thanks to artificial intelligence. Jamie Dupree, 54, a political radio journalist with Cox Media Group, is unable to talk due to a rare neurological condition. A new voice was created for him by Scottish technology company CereProc. CereProc trained a neural network to predict how Mr Dupree would talk, using samples from his old voice recordings. "This has saved my job and saved my family from a terrible financial unknown," Mr Dupree told the BBC. "There is not much of a market for radio reporters who can't talk." Typically, in order to create a voice for someone, the individual needs to read out a script for 30 hours in order to gather enough data. Then artificial intelligence is applied to either chop up words from the audio file and stick them back together on demand, or the technology is used to predict and imitate the person's speech patterns. Both of these methods can cost tens of thousands of pounds, and take a month to produce just one voice. Neural networks To speed up the process and make it more affordable, CereProc started developing its own neural networks in 2006. Today, its artificial intelligence system can generate a voice in just a few days for £500, once a user has recorded themselves reading the script on its website. Image copyright CereProc Image caption Users record themselves reading out a sequence of sentences, which can be then turned into a voice The neural networks, which contain between six to 10 layers each, work by slicing audio recordings of words down to phonetics. The artificial intelligence system slices each word read out by an individual into 100 tiny pieces, and does this with lots of common words until eventually it understands how basic phonetics work in that person's voice and has an ordered sequence for all the pieces in each word. Then, the neural network can create its own sounds and predict what the person would sound like if they were to say a series of words in conversation. Many computer scientists around the world are trying to replicate the human brain by training neural networks to perform image recognition, but CereProc says that it is much easier to apply artificial intelligence to sound. "AI techniques work quite well on small constrained problems, and learning to model speech is something deep neural nets can do really well," Chris Pidcock, CereProc's chief technical officer and co- founder, told the BBC. "It's a much more solvable problem than machine intelligence." Silenced by illness Mr Dupree has been covering political news from Congress in Washington DC for the past 35 years. And as a journalist producing content for six radio stations, his voice is essential to his work. He began losing his voice in 2016, but there was nothing wrong with his vocal cords, throat or larynx. After baffling doctors from several large US university hospitals, eventually Mr Dupree was diagnosed with tongue protrusion dystonia - a rare neurological condition where the tongue pushes forward out of his mouth and his throat tightens whenever he wants to speak, making it impossible for him to say more than two or three words at a time. Rather than give up his work, Mr Dupree continued to do interviews with policymakers in Congress using an eWriter tablet to scribble questions during one-to-one interviews, or by recording the answers given to groups of journalists in the Senate building's hallways between hearings. Image copyright Jamie Dupree Image caption Jamie Dupree at work in a radio studio Although he was still writing and producing stories, he had essentially gone off the air completely, because he could not present the stories he had written. Then, in December, a member of the US Congress spoke out on his behalf on the floor of the House of Representatives. The resulting media attention spurred his employer to try to find a way for Mr Dupree to return to the air, since it had almost 30 years' worth of his radio broadcasts on file. A new voice Thanks to the computer-generated voice produced by CereProc, from Monday, 25 June, onwards Mr Dupree will once again be heard by WSB Atlanta listeners, as well as audiences of Cox Media-owned stations in Orlando, Jacksonville, Dayton and Tulsa. With his new voice, Mr Dupree can now write a script and then use a free text-to-speech software program called Balabolka on his laptop to turn it into an audio recording. If a word or turn of phrase doesn't sound quite right in the recording, he can slow certain consonants or vowels down, or swap a word to one that does work, or change the pitch, and he can have a full radio story ready to go live in just seven minutes. "It is me, there is no doubt about that," said Mr Dupree. "Yes, it is slightly robotic, but no-one was promising me that it was going to be perfect." In person, when talking to family and colleagues, Mr Dupree still has to rely on the eWriter tablet, or saying a couple of words slowly, but the new voice has made a big difference to his life. "This is awesome," he said. "Writing for my blog, sending out tweets and doing Facebook is great - but there is nothing like cranking out a 20-second story jammed with a couple of sound bites to make the top of the hour newscast." (via Gerald T Pollarc, NC, DXLD) MULTIPLE INSTANCES OF RDS SPY It should come as no surprise that Ray Dees, manufacturer of the RDS Decoder at RayDees.com. While I have no connection with Ray, I’m big fan of his product. The decoder is great on it’s on, and even better when paired with RDS Spy software — which is easy to do using just a USB cable. http://www.raydees.com/RDS_Decoder.html If you run multiple instances of RDS Spy like I do, you simply want to save each “workspace” with the name of the receiver. For example, now have the following workspaces saved in RDS Spy: 1.) Airspy R2 Auto Logger 2.) Yamaha T-85 3.) Elad SDR 4.) Dennon TU-1500 After you have created each individual workplace, then go under “Options” and select “Save Workspace On Exit” with a check mark. Now when you restart the computer, all you have to do is open multiple versions of RDS Spy and select one workspace for each. This also has the added advantage of putting the title of the receiver at the top of each window, making it easy to figure out which receiver is detecting a given RDS signal. Thanks, Ray! 73, (Les Rayburn, N1LF, 121 Mayfair Park, Maylene, AL 35114, EM63nf, WTFDA gg via DXLD) 7.5" LONGWAVE LOOPSTICK XHDATA D-808 For the admittedly small segment of the DXing community that still has interest in experimentation, an XHDATA D-808 model was successfully enhanced by the transplantation of a 7.5" Longwave loopstick (as part of a project to thoroughly test out the new model's DXing capability on all bands). The Longwave loopstick was originally developed for the Tecsun PL-380 model, with full construction details posted in the PL-380 "supercharging" article posted at http://www.mediafire.com/file/du3sr5cd9thqvau/7.5inch-LS-PL380.doc/file It has 122 turns of 100/44 Litz wire on a Type 33 ferrite rod for a target inductance of about 1700 uH. The loopstick was developed as part of an interesting project to make the first Longwave-optimized loopsticks for portables, since stock portables always have MW- optimized loopsticks. As a result of the Longwave loopstick transplant, the LW sensitivity of the D-808 was greatly enhanced, of course. But in comparison with the 7.5" Longwave loopstick Tecsun PL-380 model, the modified D-808 had a shade less sensitivity in digging out the weaker NDB's. I suspect that the Si4735 DSP chip in the new D-808 has some minor differences in comparison to the Longwave performance of the Si4734 DSP chip in the Pl-380. Despite this, the modified D-808 does have a few advantages over the modified PL-380. When its SSB capability is used by a skilled operator, it can compensate for the minor sensitivity difference. In addition, the Tecsun company removed a lot of the DSP chip shielding in the PL-380 model as a cost-cutting measure around 2012, resulting in an unpleasant digital whine when new PL-380's receive this Longwave modification. As a result, unless you can track down an "old-model" (pre-2012) PL-380, your options at this point are pretty much limited to the D-808 if you want to have a digital-whine-free Longwave- optimized portable. Currently the XHDATA D-808 has a somewhat murky supply network, with all the Chinese-manufactured models being shipped from China. There are a couple of eBay sellers shipping the D-808 to North America at a price of $112 plus $10 shipping at the current time, but there are no North American suppliers. As such, the future availability and price of the model are somewhat uncertain at this point. I've managed to track down three models (two from eBay, and one from Hiroyuki Okamura in Japan), and all three have been of good quality so far (Gary DeBock (in Puyallup, WA, USA), June 16, nrc-am gg via DXLD) BLAW-KNOX TOWERS I stumbled across this video on Blaw-Knox towers. IT’S TIME TO KILL THE AM BAND https://radioink.com/2018/05/23/its-time-to-kill-the-am-band/ By Radio Ink https://radioink.com/author/eryan/ - May 23, 2018 (By Robert Lee) “Elections have consequences,” and, “Someone moved the goalposts.” In reading the objections by a couple of LPFM advocacy groups about the recent deluge of FM translators-for-AM stations applications, I see two things going on: politics, first; and, second, misguided policy by a government agency, the FCC, which, as I said in my response to John Garziglia’s column of May 21, https://radioink.com/2018/05/20/mass-lpfm-fm-translator-application-objections/ has taken one serious problem and created another equally serious problem. On the first point, politics: During the Obama years, the Julius Genachowski and Tom Wheeler, Democrat-led FCC gave great priority to LPFMs, in the name of local community activism, to counter the big, corporate, full-power stations. Clear Channel was generally the biggest enemy that had to be slayed, or at least brought down a notch or two, since Clear Channel and its behemoth, cost-slashing brethren had destroyed localism in radio. Then, an Ajit Pai, Republican-led FCC came along, with its “AM revitalization,” which meant shifting the priority and emphasis on the use of “secondary FM services” from LPFMs to FM translators - for-AMs. And, yes, the LPFM proponents are quite correct that there has been a flood of FM translators that now compete for space on the FM band, against both full-power and low-power FMs. Click on the URL to read the rest (via Kevin Redding, ABDX via DXLD) PROPAGATION +++++++++++ NEW FROM COMET: RADIO WAVE PROPAGATION Greetings, The COMET Program is pleased to announce the publication of the new lesson, "Radio Wave Propagation". https://www.meted.ucar.edu/training_module.php?id=1394 As a society we have become dependent on satellite communications, but satellites fail with alarming frequency. Before the advent of satellites, long distance communications were carried out with high frequency (HF) radio transmissions. This 1-hour lesson examines the factors that control long-distance radio communications, with an emphasis on refraction in the ionosphere, frequency selection, and the effects of solar radiation. The intended audience for Radio Wave Propagation is any potential radio operator who communicates across long distances using HF frequencies. This can include members of the U.S. DoD, emergency management, and amateur radio operators. We welcome any comments or questions you may have regarding the content, instructional approach, or use of this lesson. Please e-mail your comments or questions to Alan Bol (alanbol AT ucar.edu). No Earth-directed CMEs were observed in satellite imagery. No proton events were observed at geosynchronous orbit. The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit reached high levels on 11-13 Jun and decreased to moderate levels on 14-17 Jun. The largest flux of the period was 1,840 pfu observed at 11/1945 UTC. Geomagnetic field activity was at quiet levels under a nominal solar wind regime. Solar wind speed ranged from approximately 280 km/s to 340 km/s through the majority of the period with total field at or below 6 nT. At approximately 17/1250 UTC, a solar sector boundary crossing was observed from a negative to a positive orientation. A corresponding increase in total field to around 14 nT was observed at 17/2355 UTC along with an increase in solar wind speed to near 415 km/s. This indicated the arrival of a CIR preceding a positive polarity coronal hole high speed stream (CH HSS). FORECAST OF SOLAR AND GEOMAGNETIC ACTIVITY 18 JUNE - 14 JULY 2018 Solar activity is expected to be at very low levels with a slight chance for C-class flares from 18 Jun-01 Jul with the return of old Region 2712 (N15, L=176). Very low levels are expected for the rest of the forecast period. No proton events are expected at geosynchronous orbit. The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit is expected to be at high levels on 28 Jun-10 Jul due to CH HSS influence. Geomagnetic field activity is expected to be at unsettled to active levels on 18-19, 24-25, and 27-30 Jun with G1 (Minor) storm levels expected on 18 Jun and 28-29 Jun due to recurrent CH HSS activity. :Product: 27-day Space Weather Outlook Table 27DO.txt :Issued: 2018 Jun 18 0349 UTC # Prepared by the US Dept. of Commerce, NOAA, Space Weather Prediction Center # Product description and SWPC contact on the Web # http://www.swpc.noaa.gov/wwire.html # # 27-day Space Weather Outlook Table # Issued 2018-06-18 # # UTC Radio Flux Planetary Largest # Date 10.7 cm A Index Kp Index 2018 Jun 18 72 15 5 2018 Jun 19 74 8 3 2018 Jun 20 74 5 2 2018 Jun 21 74 5 2 2018 Jun 22 74 5 2 2018 Jun 23 74 5 2 2018 Jun 24 70 8 3 2018 Jun 25 70 8 3 2018 Jun 26 70 5 2 2018 Jun 27 70 15 4 2018 Jun 28 70 28 5 2018 Jun 29 70 18 5 2018 Jun 30 70 10 3 2018 Jul 01 68 5 2 2018 Jul 02 68 5 2 2018 Jul 03 68 5 2 2018 Jul 04 68 5 2 2018 Jul 05 68 5 2 2018 Jul 06 68 5 2 2018 Jul 07 72 5 2 2018 Jul 08 72 5 2 2018 Jul 09 72 5 2 2018 Jul 10 72 5 2 2018 Jul 11 72 5 2 2018 Jul 12 72 5 2 2018 Jul 13 72 5 2 2018 Jul 14 74 5 2 (SWPC via DXLD) SPORADIC E ON SHORTWAVE Hi Glenn, I notice this in your latest news: ``I notice that no other SW monitors ever mention Es, perhaps because they are not equally experienced with USW, able to draw the obvious correlations (I also had *one* USB ham on the 18 MHz band in no hurry to ID, with typical deep but brief Es fading, his contact inaudible) (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)`` As you know, there aren't all that many SW stations left in Europe, and with the exception of Nauen, Moosbrunn, Romania and Greece - all of which are usually already loud and clear when to Europe. I have not NOTICED any Es enhancement of their signals - particularly when on the higher bands - either. Maybe due to their distance from my location??? And Woofferton rarely - if ever - seems to do so - maybe too close ??? The best one for producing Es is Issoudun. I've heard very strong and steady signals from there on such as 9790 11700 15300 17850, etc., that could only be caused by that mode of propagation. Normally, these signals struggle to reach S9 here let alone many dB's above that. And yes, I've also heard hams with louder than would be expected signals. Maybe others hear them but don't put "2 and 2" together to realise why! (Greetings from Noel Green, Blackpool, NW England, DX LISTENING DIGEST) KNAU ALERTS - STRANGE RECEPTION? IT'S NOT YOUR RADIO From time to time, especially as the weather warms up in Northern Arizona, we receive calls from listeners alerting us that "another station has taken over our frequency," or words to that effect. Sometimes it alerts us to a system malfunction. Other times it reminds us of a phenomenon called "E-skip." I'm not an engineer but the simple explanation is that under certain atmospheric conditions, radio waves can travel in abnormal ways. For instance, a distant station's signal can travel hundreds of miles and seem to crowd a local station on the same frequency. Some of our repeater stations are licensed to fairly low power and are easily overwhelmed by more powerful signals even if they're coming from far away. The only good news really is that ducting works both ways. KNAU's signal can also travel tremendous distances too. Amateur radio operators actually like the condition, because it allows them to talk over greater distances than normal as seen in this video [11:54]. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2aoN0s-eafE [this one is recent; Gordon West confuses Mauna Loa with Kilauea and does not realise that dxinfocentre.com will also work when spelt dxinfocenter.com Also includes a clip of Dr Bob Heil, K9EID --- gh] Our combination of changing seasons, current weather and relatively low-power stations is what's behind this interference. Assuredly, it will pass.
